No. 394,071. Patented Dec. 4, 1888.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS HAYDEN, OF PORT HOPE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
P L O W.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,071, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed January 12, 1838. Renewed October 26,1888. Serial No. 289,242. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HAYDEN, plowmaker, of the town of Port Hope, in the county of Durham, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to form the nose of a plow so that it will not wear away; and it consists in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow provided with my detachable nose-plate. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the nose prepared to receive the plate. Fig. 3 isa detail of the noseplate.
In the drawings, A is the nose of the plow, on the bottom of which I cast a T-shaped recess, the shank a of the recess being tapered and dovetailed the head b of the T-shaped recess being flush with the bottom of the tapered shank a, so that when the noseplate B, which is shaped to correspond with the T- shaped recess, is inserted into position one side of it will rest against the bottom of the recess, while its opposite side is flush with the bottom of the nose A.
I am aware that it is old to provide a plow with a detachable point, and do not seek to cover such broadly. It will be observed that mynose-plate 1: is a thin steel plate, substantially T-shaped, easy and cheap of manufacture, and readily retained in position without the en'iployment of bolts or other fastenings, the shank and the head both being dovetailed, as shown.
It will of course be understood that the T- shaped recess is cast upon a chill.
From this description it will be understood that the T- shaped nose-plate B can be readily knocked out when it becomes worn and replaced either after it has been sharpened or by a new plate.
hat I claim as my invention 1. A plow-nose having a chilled recess formed on its bottom, in combination with a thin steel plate T-shaped to fit the recess, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A plow-nose, A, having a T-shaped recess, a shank, (1, of the recess being tapered and dovetailed, and the head I) of the T-shaped recess being flush with the bottom of the tapered shank a, in combination with the thin steel nose-plate 13, formed to fit the T-shaped recess, and having all of its sides inclined, as shown, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Port Hope, December 23, 1887.
THOS. HAYDEN.
In presence of- HENRY WHITE, MARION M. BLETCHER.
