An improved sanding tool which overcomes the problem of getting into corners for sanding; the tool consisting of a conical shaped mandrel upon which a replaceable correspondingly conical shaped sandpaper cone is fitted, the mandrel having a shank receivable into a chuck of a portable electric drill or other power means so as to rotate the tool.

SANDING CONE This invention relates generally to sanding tools such as are used in finishing wood work.
It is generally well known that it is sometimes very difficult to get close into tight corners or into narrow areas with a sandpaper and effectively sand the same. This situation is objectionable and. therefore, in want of an improvement.
Accordingly. it is a principle object of the present invention to provide a novel sanding tool that overcomes the above described situation so that a desirable sanded finish can be provided in places that are difficult to reach with a sand paper.
Another object is to provide a novel sanding tool that includes a conically tapered sanding cone. and which is power rotated for working in narrow places.
Other objects are to provide a sanding cone which is simple in design. inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction. cas to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side view of the invention shown partly in cross section.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the replaceable sanding sock.
FIG. 3 is a modified design of the invention in which the sock is screw thread engagable on the mandril thus being easier to secure.
FIG. 4 is another modified design of the invention in which an improved frictionally holding collar also in cludes slots to receive tabs of the sock for increasing hold.
Referring now to the drawing in detail. and more particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2 at this time, the reference numeral represents a sanding cone according to the present invention wherein there is mandrel ll of conically tapering shape over which a replaceable correspondingly shaped cone or sock 12 made of sandpaper is fitted. The sand paper surface is on the outer side of the cone 12. The mandrel II is about six inches long and is made of hard rubber material.
In installing the sandpaper sock, its end is folded over the end of the mandrel. and a clamp 13 is then pressed down on the folded end, and is then locked in place with a nut 14 engaged on screw thread 15 integral with a rear end of the mandrel. A shank l6 protruding from a rear end of the mandrel is adaptable for fitting in a chuck of a portable electric drill or the like so that in use. the sandpaper sock is rotated so to sand a surface.
In FIG. 3. a modified design of the invention comprises a mandrel [7 having a short spiral screw thread 18 near one end which is threadingly engagable with an internal screw thread 19 within a frustro-conical sleeve 20 that may be stapled. riveted or otherwise secured within the open end of the sandpaper sock 21.
In this form of the invention. the screw thread employed is in a direction so the sock remains engaged on the mandrel during rotation.
In FIG. 4, still another modified design of the inven tion is shown wherein the sandpaper sock 22 includes tongues 23 on its end for insertion into diagonal slots 24 of a holding collar 25 having a conical central opening 26 within which the sock 22 and a mandrel 27 is fittedv A take up nut 28 has internal thread 29 engaging external thread 30 on the end of the mandrel. The nut also has external thread 31 engaging internal thread 32 of the holding collar 25.
In operation, after the tongues 23 are inserted into slots 24, the holding collar longitudinally slided so to hold the sock therebetween and the mandrel. The collar is slided by means of rotating the nut on the thread 30.
Thus another modified design has been provided.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it is understood that such changes will be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as is defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a sanding cone. the combination of a conically tapered mandrel and a similarly shaped sandpaper sock snugly and replaceably fitted thereon said mandrel hav ing an axial shank projecting from one end of the mandrel adapted to be mounted in the chuck of a portable power drill including a collar adjustably mounted axially on the mandrel whereby the shank projects axially through said collar, further including a sleeve mounted axially adjustable on the collar encompassing and fitting closely about said one end of the mandrel and sock for retaining the sock on the mandrel in an adjustable manner, wherein said collar includes means for securing and engaging said sock on said mandrel.
2. A cone as in claim 1, wherein said means includes a conical surface with perforations therethrough and the sock has terminal tabs fitting through said perforations for securing purposes.

Claims (2)

1. In a sanding cone, the combination of a conically tapered mandrel and a similarly shaped sandpaper sock snugly and replaceably fitted thereon said mandrel having an axial shank projecting from one end of the mandrel adapted to be mounted in the chuck of a portable power drill including a collar adjustably mounted axially on the mandrel whereby the shank projects axially through said collar, further including a sleeve mounted axially adjustable on the collar encompassing and fitting closely about said one end of the mandrel and sock for retaining the sock on the mandrel in an adjustable manner, wherein said collar includes means for securing and engaging said sock on said mandrel.
2. A cone as in claim 1, wherein said means includes a conical surface with perforations therethrough and the sock has terminal tabs fitting through said perforations for securing purposes.
