J. W. SPOLDERS & F. X. VIEN.
SAFETY VALVE. No. 892,469. Patented Nov. 6, 1888.

UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN WV. SPOLDERS AND FRANCIS X. VIl lN, OF BROOKLYN, NIll/V YORK.
SAFETY=VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,469, dated November 6, 1888. Application filed September 2, 1886. Serial No. 212.448. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, J OHN W. SPoLDERs and FRANCIS X. VIEN, both of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Valve, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved safety-valve which is simple in construction, very effective in operation, and not liable to get out of order.
The invention consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of our improvement, parts being in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
The pipe A, which is connected in any suit able manner with the boiler, is provided on its top with a flat seat, B, on which rests a valve, 0, having on its bottom a central projection, I). which directs the steam toward the brackets A, attached to the pipe A. The bolts I are held in place by nuts J. On the bolt G is formed a collar, G between which and the lever H is held the bell-shaped cover K,which protects the central projection, E, from dust.
It will be seen that when the steam-pressare in the boiler exceeds but slightly the limit to which the safety-valve is set,then the pressure of the steam raises the valve 0, as very little friction has to be overcome between the seat B and its contacting valve 0, on account of the flat valve and its flat seat. At the same time the friction on the fulcrum of the lever His reduced to a minimum on account of the pointed bolts I on which the lever H swings, and as there is no pivotal joint between the lever H and the valve 0, but simply a contacting point, hardly any friction exists between these two parts.
As soon as the pressure of the steam in the boiler has fallen to its normal pressure the valve 0 is centrally seated on the pipe A by the action of the lever H and its pointed bolt G. Thus it will be seen that the valve will al ways act at the slightest excessive pressure of steam, as all the contacting points offer very little resistance.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a safety-valve, the combination, with the pipe A, having the flat seat B, of the valve G, fitted to the seat B and provided with a central rounded projection, D, on its bottom, and having a comically-shaped recess in its top, the lever H, and the pointed bolt G G, secured to the lever and projecting into the recess of the valve, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a safety valve, the combination of the valve G, having on its top the central projection, E, with the bolt G attached to the lever H, and the bell-shaped cover K, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a safety-valve, the pipe A, having the flat seat B. and the valve 0, provided on its top with the central projection, E, having the conical recess F, and the central projection, D, on the bottom of the valve 0, in coznbination with the bolt G, the pointed end G of which engages the said conical recess F, the lever H, carrying the said bolt G, the pointed bolts I, forming a fulcrum for the said lever H, and the cover K, attached to the bolt G, substantially as shown and described.
JOHN W. SPOLDERS. FRANCIS X. VIEN.
