HEMMING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

- This invention relates to improvements in hemmers for sewing-machines; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, all as will be hereinafter described. The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of my device, showing the turner in position. Fig. 2' is a similar view showing the turner thrown back. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is also a plan view, and Figs. 5 and 6 are plan views of my device in modified form. Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the hemmer composed of the base-plate a, designed to be attached to the bed of a machine by its slot b and a setscrewin the well-known manner, and the hem turner B, having the scroll b. This plate a is provided with the front extension, 0, and on the top thereof are arranged eyes or sockets d, adapted to receive a cross bar or rod, 0, to which is hinged the hem-turner aforesaid. This turner-has an eye, f, through which passes the rod 6, thus providing a hinged connection between the plate and said turner. The eye of this hinge-connection of the turner covers only part of the rod, the turner being cut away, as shown at 9, thereby permitting the turner to slide laterally upon the said rod, and when the turner is in its normal position the outer edge, h, thereof passes beneath a lip or raised projection, i, on the extension aforesaid, thereby firmly but removably securing the turner to the base-plate while sewing. It will be seen that the turner has two movements-to wit, a hinged movement, whereby the same can be raised and thrown back, and a sliding move- The operation of my device is simple, as after the device is attached to a machine in the wellknown manner the operator draws the turner or scroll toward him, the same sliding on the rod above mentioned, and turns it back on its hinge, after which the work or material to be hemmed is inserted in the scroll, and the turner is again brought back to a horizontal position and forced forward, when the edge I Will engage the lip on the extension and at the same time 'bring the material directly beneath 5 the needle of a sewing-machine, and should the thread break or the bobbin run out and one has to take out the work it will be accomplished with ease and in a very short time by the manner in which I construct my hemmer, and it is simple in operation and easily and quickly adjusted, and at the same time durable, as well as cheap to manufacture.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I show my device in modified form, wherein the eye which connects the turner to the base-plate is not cut away and allows of no sliding movement, and the extension of the base-plate has no lip, but the eye of each is formed integral with the turner, which construction I prefer; but the eye can be separate, if so desired, and attached to the turner.

Having thus described my invention, what-I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is

The combination, in a sewing-machine hemmer, of the baseplate A, provided with the extension 0, having the lip i, eyes (I, and rod 6, the turner 13, having the scroll I) cut away at g and provided with the eye f, through which passes the rod e, whereby the turner is hinged to the plate A, substantially as described.
