COMBINED PUNCHING AND SHEARING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,362, dated November 6, 1888.

punching and cutting of metal plates, such as boiler-iron, &c.
The invention consists of a head mounted to slide by action of a lever operating the punch and shear.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in'whieh similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the linear or of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view, partly in section, of the head, punch, and shear-blade; and Fig. 4 is a'plan view of the punch-die and its guideway.
On suitably-constructed standards A A are mounted longitudinally the guideways B B, on which is held to slide the head 0, forming a bearing for the shear and'punch blade D, adapted to move vertically in the head 0. On the lower end of the said blade D is fastened the movable shear-blade E and the punch F of any approved construction. Next to the punch F is placed the forked guide-arm G, having a slot, G, through which passes abolt, H, screwing in the head 0, so as to fasten the said guide-arm G to-thc said head 0, at the same time permitting its vertical adjustment turned, turns the eccentric J, and thereby I moves the blade D, the shear E, and the punch F up and down in the head 0. From the lever L projects a pin, L, passing through a slot, N, formed in the pawl N, operating over a toothed bar, O, secured to the tops of the 5 standards A A. This pawl N and toothed bar 0 serve to move the head O forward on its guideways B and Bwhen cutting metal plates. Directly below the movable shear-blade E is secured a stationary shear-blade, E, fastened by suitable screws, Q, between the plate 1? and an offset, It, both fastened to the standards A A. The stationary blade E extends from one standard A to the other, as is plainly shown in Fig. l. The offset R is provided on top with'a recess, B, into which is fitted the punch die or block F, provided with a number of apertures, F, into which fits the lower end of the punch F. The punch-die F is secured in place on the offset R by a screw, S, screwing in one of the aperturesltfiformed in the offset R. Thus the punch-die F can be moved to any desired place on the offset It, and secured in place on the same by the screw S, passing through one of the apertures Bi. Directly behind the movable shear-blade E is held a guide-bar, T, extending between the standards A A and secured to slotted. arms T, fastened by set-screws to the rear of the guideways B and B.
The operation is as follows: When the operator desires to shear metal plates, the lever L is thrown into its uppermost position andthe plate to be sheared is placed over the fixed shear-blade E, between the standardsA A. The head O is then preferably at the left end of the machine. The operator then moves the lever L downward, so as to impart a rotary motion to the shaft K and the eccentric J, which latter engages the block I and conseo quently moves the block and plate D down ward, so that the shear-blade E, with its beveled and inclined cutting-edge, cuts into the plate held on the fixed shear-blade E. As soon as the out has been made, the operator moves 5 the lever L upward, so that the shaft K and the eccentric J are turned in the opposite direction, and the blade D, with the shear-blade E, is moved upward and out of contact with the plate to be cut. \Vhen the lever L is nearly in its uppermost position, its arm L engages the inner end of the slot N of the pawl N, the pointed end of which rests on one of the teeth of the bar 0, so that a further upward movement of the lever L causes a forward sliding movement of the head 0. hen the operator now depresses the lever L, the same operation as above described is repeated; but the shearblade E cuts into the metal a short distance inward and in line with the former cut. The abovedescribed operation is repeated until the head 0 has traveled nearly across from one standard A to the other and the plate is out throughout its width. \Vhen the operator desires to punch, the punch F, which has been removed for cutting, is inserted and the shearblade E is removed. The operator then fastens the punch-die F under the punch F in the offset 1%, so that the said punch F registers with one of the apertures F in the die F. The operator then discngagcs the pawl N from the toothed bar 0 and fastens the head C permanently to the guideways B and B by means of set-screws O, scrcwi ng through the head G into the guideways. The lever L is then moved up and down in the same manner as before de scribed, so that the punch F is alternately moved up and down and punches apertures into the plate held on top of the die F, the
punched-out pieces passing into the respective apertures F" of the die F.
The guide bar '1 holds the plate to be cut by the shear-blades E and 1G in place when the shear-blade Fl moves upward, and the guide-bar G holds the plates to be punched in position when the punch F moves upward.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a head mounted to slide, of a plate carrying the shear and punch and mounted to slide vertically in the said head, an eccentric held in the said plate for raising and lowering the same, a lever for operating the said eccentric, a slotted pawl connected with the said lever, and a fixed toothed bar engaged by the said pawl, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the frame having a sliding head and a movable tool-carrying plate, ofa lever for operating said plate, and a pawl-and-ratehet mechanism operated by said lever for feeding the head, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a head mounted to slide longitudinally, of a plate mounted to slide vertically in the said head, a shear secured to the lower end of the said head, an eccentric held in the said plate for raising and lowering the same, a lever for operating the said eccentric, a fixed knife or shear blade on which operates said moving shear-blade, a slotted pawl connected with the said lever,and a fixed toothed bar engaging the said pawl, substantially as shown and described.
t. The combination, with the verticallymovable cutter and the fixed cutter, of a verticallyadjustable guide, T, in rear of and parallel with said cutters, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the standards A A and the connecting-bar I, having an offset, R, on its front side, grooved longitudinally 011 its upper side, as at it, to receive the fixed cutter and die, ofthe longitudiuallymovable head 0, mounted on guides parallel with bar 1?,and having a vertically-movable cutter and punchcarrying plate and lever for feeding the head and operating the said plate, substantially as set forth.
