GEORGE W. BENT, OF HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS.
FOLDING OR MANTEL BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,178, dated November 6, 1888.
I Application filed March 17,1888. Serial No. 267,482. (No model.)
' when the bed is unfolded the said flexible mattress automatically places the feet of the foot-board in correct position, substantially as will be described.
Figure 1 by full lines shows a longitudinal section of a mantel-bed embodying my invention and ready for use, it being represented by dotted lines in the position occupied by it when folded up and not in use. Figs. 2 and 3 are details to be referred to, and Fig. t a section of Fig. 3 on line 00 w. v
The frame to support the usual mattress, a, of woven wire or canvas or other material, consists, as herein shown, of two independent sections, a a joined together by hinges aflonly one of which shown in Fig. 1. The section a is pivoted, as at a", to the sides of a case, B, provided with a top or shelf, 1), within which the folding bed-frame is concealed by suitable curtains (not shown) or in other suitable manner when the said bed-supporting frame is folded up and not in use.
The section a of the bed-supporting frame is provided with legs or feet If, only one of which is shown, the said feet being hinged at b to a slat or board, b, secured to the sides of the section a the said feet having secured or otherwise firmly fastened to them a crossboard, b, forming the foot-board of my improved mantel-bed.
The section a of the bed-supporting frame is provided, as shown, with suitable slats, I), to which are attached, as shown, spiral springs 1), upon which rests the mattress a.
The section a is provided, as shown, with legs a, only onebeing shown in Fig. 1, which are preferably hinged to one of the slats I), each leg 0 having pivotally connected to its lower end, as at c, a bar, 0 hinged-at its opposite end, as shown at c, to across-bar, c, of the case B.
The mattress a has its ends connected to the folding frame, so that when the said frame occupies the position shown by full lines, Fig. 1, ready for use, the-said mattress will be below the pivots of the hinges joining the sections, thus exerting a downward pull upon the section a" and maintaining the said section on the floor. When the section a is folded over and upon the section a, the foot-board b and feet b are permitted by the hinges b to lie flat or substantially parallel to the mattress, said foot-board when in this position, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, forming aspace, d, for the reception of the pillows. By hinging the feet I) to thus form a folding foot-board, as described, a very considerable economy in space is effected, so that when the folding bed-frame is turned on its pivots a up into its dotted-line position within the case Bit occupies very little space, it presenting a neat and compact appearanee.
The case B may, if desired, have hinged to each of its sides a leg or foot-board, (0, only one being shown in Fig. 1, which is joined, as shown, by a chain or other connection, (1', to the bar 0', so that when the bed is folded up into its dotted-line position the legs or footboards d are turned inward substantially at right angles to the sides of the case, the said legs or foot-boards being turned outward or into the position shown by the sides of the section a as the bed is lowered.
The legs or feet 71 are prevented from being turned outward when the bed is lowered or in its full-line position by the foot-board b striking against the sides of the section o the said legs or feet being drawn up against the sides of the said sections by the tension of the mattress, thus preventing the legs from folding under the bed.
The top I) of the case is made detachable to economize space when the bed is packed for transportation, the said top, which when at tachcd to the case forms ashelf or support for books, &c., having secured to its under side castings 6, one for each post a of the case B, there being only one post and one casting shown in Fig. 1 and in section, Fig. 4.. Each casting e is provided with a socket-,into which the end of the post 6 extends, asshown in Fig.
4. the said casting having a flange, eZto which the top board or shelf is screwed or otherwise 5 fastened.
I elain1 1. In a folding or mantel bed, the combination of a head-section and afoot-section pivotally secured thereto, and having a folding foot- IO board, with a flexible mattress secured to the head-section and to the hinged foot-board above its pivot, whereby when the bed is unfolded the said flexible mattress automatically places the feet of the foot-board in correct po- 1 sition, substantially as described.
