CAR==COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,487, dated October 23, 1888.
Application filed June 528, 1888. Serial No. 278.479. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY N. SHEFFIELD and JOHN K. JAMISON, citizens of the United States, residing at Seney, in the county of Polk and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar- Oouplings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in car-couplers of the link-and-pin variety; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the draw-head of a coupler embodying theinvention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof through the boltopenings for the swinging gate and through.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates adraw-head, of ordinary construction, provided with the upper and lower couplingpin openings, a a, respectively, in its roof and floor, and having its roof thickened around the upper pin-opening in order that the pin may be held more erect. B is the pin having a suitable head, I), or surrounding flange; and O is the link, both of which are of ordinary construction.
D is a bar running transversely across the inner surface of the roof of the draw-head and integral therewith immediately in front of the upper pin-opening, and with its outer side, d, inclining downward and inward, while its inner side, (2, descends vertically from the front of the opening a.
E is a swinging gate very thick and heavy and having the notch e centrally in its upper edge, the bottom of which notch is curved and inclines downward and frontward, as shown.
F F are bolts, preferably square-shanked, passing upward through corresponding openings in the roof of the draw head at equal distances on each side of the upper pin-opening. The said bolts are engaged by suitable nuts and washers above the drawhead. The inner ends of said bolts are formed into fiat eyes f, which enter notches g in the arms G of the swinging gate on each side of the central notch, e, and are pivoted therein by pins 9, so that thegate can readily swing inward, but is prevented from swinging outward by the inner side, at, of the bar D.
The gateswings vertically between the coupling-pin openings, and the point of said pin rests in the notch e, which forms a seat for and supports it. When the link enters, it swings the gate inward, allowing the pin to drop out of the notch and engage in the link. This is aided by the downward and forward inclination of the bottom of the notch or seat 6. The outer side, (I, of the bar D directs the link downward and prevents it from ever striking the pin, and so avoids coupling. \Vhen the link has entered,the gate,which is quite heavy. restson its inner end and holds it horizontal and in position to enter the opposite draw-head.
Having described our invention,we clain1 The combination, in a car-coupling, of the draw-head having vertical openings through its roof on opposite sides of the pin-opening, the bolts inserted through said openings, having theirinner ends, f,fiattened and perforated, the nuts on the upper ends of said bolts, the weighted gate having its upper'edgeprovided with a seat, e, and the notched arms G, receiving the flattened ends f of the bolts, and the pivot-pins inserted through said arms and the ends of'the bolts, as set forth.
