0. MAHILLON.
GLARIONET. No. 391,479. Patented Oct. 28, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT CHARLES MAHILLON, OF BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, ASSIGNOR TO IVILLIAM H. GUNDY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLARIONET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,479, dated October 23, 1888. Application filed May 14. 1888. Serial No. 273.810. (No model.) Patented in Belgium December 15, 1887, X0. 79,681, and in England February 13, 1888,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES MAHILLON, a subject of the King of Belgium, and residing in Brussels, (Bruxelles,) in the Kingdom of Belgium, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clarionets,(for which I have ob tained a patent in Great Britain, No. 2,181, bearing date February 13, 1888, and a patent in Belgium, No. 79,681, hearing date Decenr ber 15, 1887,) of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is an elevation of the lower register ota clarionet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the improved key. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the lower register of a clarionet constructed in the ordinary manner.
If certain notes of the olarionet as now con structed (see Fig. 3) are compared with one another, it is found that an inequality exists between the E, F, F-sharp, and G of the chalumeau register and their corresponding twelfth, B, O, Osharp, and D, of the upper register. In both these registers the first three notes are vibrative and clear, while the fourth is thin and wanting in resonance. In order to give to this last note a quality of tone equal to that of the three preceding ones, it is necessary to open the key a, Fig. 3, that of F-sharp, O-sharp; but then, besides the change of fingering which. is thus necessitated, there is also a defect in the intonation, as the opening of this key has the effect of raising the notes G D, which are produced by opening the key I), Fig. 3. This irregularity in all clarionets, however well they may be made, exists because the notes E, F, and F-sharp of the chalumeau register, or their corresponding twelfth,B, O, and O-sharp, of the upper register, are producedthe first by the column of air vibrating throughout its entire length, and the two others by sharpening it by means of the side holes, which remain open, while the notes G D are produced by opening a hole quite close to a closed key, a, Fig. 3. It is certain that the ventral segment formed by opening a side hole has never the same vibrative quality as one produced at the extremity of the tube; but part of the column of air beyond the U side hole participates in the vibration, and additional vibration may be utilized by making an opening quite close to that which immediately produces the sound. In this invention, therefore, in order to attain this end, I provide for the formation of the notes G D, twoside holes, 0 d, Fig. 1,instead of one. These two side holes are covered by the plates 0 D, both attached to the same rod, B,and adapted to be opened simultaneously by asinglemovement of the key A. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) The result is that the notes G D are produced, as usual, by the hole 0, while the vibration is at the same time re-enforced by thehole (1, which is quite close to the hole 0. The correctness of intonation may be assured by giving to the hole 0 a suitable diameter.
In a clarionetconstructed in accordance with this improvement the usual lingering is maintained, and the mechanism is quite as simple and precise as that of the ordinary instrument, and thisimprovement may be applied not only to every kind of a clarionet, but also to all wind-instruments with lateral holes.
Having thus fully describes my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a clarionet or analogous instrument, the combination of the tube provided with the holes 0 cZ,in the positions shown and described, and the plates (3 D, both rigidly secured to the same rod,B,which is provided with the key A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CI ARIIES MAIIILLOX.
