FOLDABLE CHAIR An object of the present invention is the provision of a low profile foldable chair which provides a wide radial seat area when the chair is erected to a sitting condition and the only pivot joints of which are wire or cable'anchored at each end which permit of modular quick economic construction with a minimum of moving and special parts.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a foldable chair simple in construction which permits of the use of unskilled labor in its construction as well as blind and retarded people to relieve the stress of unemployment throughout an economically distressed area.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a foldable chair for patio or camping use which provides compactness for transport or storage and which gives a stable low profile comfortable chair.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention will be more fully described hereinafter and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings in which like parts are denoted by reference characters throughout the several views:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the foldable chair of the present invention in its erect sitting condition.
FIG. 2 is a front elevational view of the chair of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of the chair of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a side elevational view of the chair of FIG. 1 in its folded condition.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the abutting relationship between the primary and secondary members caused by the intermediate members.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the abutting relationship between the rear leg members and the primary and intermediate members.
Referring now to the drawings, the chair of the present invention comprises primary members 10 and secondary members 11 which are joined by intermediate members I2 which are interlaced between the members l0 and 11 and joined for a hinged or pivotal connection by a wire or cable 13 anchored at each end 14. The cables or wires pass through openings drilled in each member. Interlaced with the primary members 10 are two front legs 15 while two rear legs 16 are interlaced with the secondary members 1 1. Both sets of legs are downwardly divergent to provide stability and antitip characteristics to the low profile chair as best seen in FIGS. 1 and 2. The ends of the wires or cables 13 may be anchored by pressed crimp chains or they may be tied or knotted to prohibit separation of the members. The intermediate members 12 not only function as a joiner between the primary and secondary members but also provide a base spinal support absent from most chairs.
The primary, secondary and intermediate members in the embodiment illustrated are of hardwood but could be also of metal or plastic and could be of variated interlaced colors to provide pool or patio furniture readily resistant to swimming pool water.
What I claim is:
l. A foldable chair comprising primary back members joined together proximate their top, secondary seat members joined proximate their front ends, intermediate seat members interlaced between said primary and secondary members and hingedly joined to each member, and leg members interlaced with said primary and secondary members and hingedly secured to said intermediate members and extending beyond said primary and secondary members and being of a length sufficient to support the primary, secondary and intermediate members above the ground or floor.
2. A foldable chair as claimed in claim I wherein said primary and intermediate members and said intermediate members and secondary members are hingedly joined by wire means passing through openings in said members and anchored at their ends to hold said members together.
3. A foldable chair as claimed in claim 2 wherein the upright leg members interlaced between said intermediate members extend beyond the lower hinge joint of said intermediate members and said primary members and abutt the ends of at least two of the secondary members when the chair is placed in the sitting condition.
4. A foldable chair as claimed in claim 3 wherein the leg membersconnected to said secondary members extend to a point below the top of the primary members to avoid tipping over of the chair when it is in the erected sitting condition.
5. A foldable chair as claimed in claim 4 wherein the intermediate and secondary members form the seat of the chair while the primary members form the back.

Claims (5)

2. A foldable chair as claimed in claim 1 wherein said primary and intermediate members and said intermediate members and secondary members are hingedly joined by wire means passing through openings in said members and anchored at their ends to hold said members together.
3. A foldable chair as claimed in claim 2 wherein the upright leg members interlaced between said intermediate members extend beyond the lower hinge joint of said intermediate members and said primary members and abutt the ends of at least two of the secondary members when the chair is placed in the sitting condition.
4. A foldable chair as claimed in claim 3 wherein the leg members connected to said secondary members extend to a point below the top of the primary members to avoid tipping over of the chair when it is in the erected sitting condition.
5. A foldable chair as claimed in claim 4 wherein the intermediate and secondary members form the seat of the chair while the primary members form the back.
