L. GATHMANN.
MACHINE FORFORMING SPIRALS FROM FLAT METAL BARS; No. 390,357.- Patented Oct. 2, 1888.
UNITED STATES FATENT tries.
LOUIS GATHMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MACHINE FOR FORMING SPIRALS FROM FLAT METAL BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,357, dated October 2, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs GATHMANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Forming Spirals from FlatMetal Bars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The nature of my invention relates to devices for spirally winding band or flat iron, either for forming continuous conveyer-fiights or the several spirals to be afterward welded together for making strong tubes, and it has been my object to provide a machine in which said spirals can be wound automatically to be continuous with the flights close against each other; and with that object in view my invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices, hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional plan view of the entire machine; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical sec tion of the machine; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section on line w w in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a transverse vertical section on line 2; v in Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a transverse vertical section on line :0 m in Fig. 1; Fig. (i, a section on line y y in Fig. 2; Fig. 7, a section on line 2 z in Fig. 1.. Fig.8 is a plan view of the winding faceplate, with the end of a bar coupled thereto for spirally coiling upon the shalt. Fig. 9 shows the bar after being spirally wound in the machine; and Fig. 10, the same, somewhat stretched apart.
Corresponding reference-characters designate like parts in all the figures of the draw- 5A denotes the frame of the machine, being rectangular in shape, and B is the main shaft, having rigidly mounted a disk, (3, the hub of which forms one of the journals resting in a box, 1, of the frame, while one end of shaft 13 is journaled in a box, 2, of the end of the frame. A spur gear-wheel, D, is mounted upon shaft B, meshing with the pinion E, mounted upon a shaft, 3, that is journaled in boxes 4. and 5 of the frame, and has also mounted upon its overhanging end a drivingpulley, 6. The forwardly-projecting end of shaft B is passed through the hub23 of a disk,
F, having wings 7, with guide-groovcsiu their ends that engage the side flanges of frame A to slide thereon longitudinally. The end of shaft B has a square socket for receiving the squared end ofa screw-bar, G, upon which is mounted a disk, H, that is screw-threaded in its hub, forming the traveling nut on said screw-bar. The rim of disk His provided with a series of screw-threaded sockets, and into either two such diametricallyopposite screwsockets are secured radial arms 8, each having an eyed end for a set screw, 9, the points of which will support such disk H while moving longitudinally over the frame sides, the lower ends of the set-screws 9 resting upon the upper plane surface of the sides of the frame, with freedom to move or slide thereon.
The end of screw G is center-punched for inserting the point of a set-screw, I, tapped through a bar, J, pivoted with one end to one corner of the frame A by a bolt, 10, and being detachably secured with its opposite end to theother corner of frame A by a pin, 11, in a manner that, after removing such pin 11, the bar J can be swung rearward. Another set screw, 12, is tapped through the solid end of journal box 2, entering with its point the counter punched socket in the end of shaft B.
Both set-screws I and 12 are provided with hand-wheels 13 and 14c for turning the same, and may be provided with jam-nuts for bold ing such screwspn any desired position. The disk 0 has secured a pin, 15, that is only sufficiently projecting from the face thereof to support the scant thickness of the plate K that is to be spirally wound, and is punched in its end for engaging such pin.
The disk F is arranged in its upper face for inserting a conical steel roller, 16, journaled in a shell, 17, that is adjusted by a set-screw, 18. This roller is held in position horizontally by two plates, 19, fitted into a recess of disk F and secured therein by screws, and vertically this roller is held by a setscrew, 20, abutting with its point against the end of roller 16. The face of this roller 16 is to project slightly beyond the face of disk F to bear against the bar K wound past it.
To one side disk F has an extension form- (No Model.)' 2' Sheets-Sheet 1.
