. UNITED STATES PATENT Genres.
LOT EVERETT DUVALL, OF LIVINGSTON, MONTANA TERRITORY.
BUGGY-TO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,957, dated September 25, 1888.
Application filed June 10,1888. Serial No. 277,689. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, L01 EVERETT DUVALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston, in the county of Park, and Montana Territory, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Lowering Wagon- Tops; and ldo declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide simple means in connection with a rock-shaft operated by a foot or hand lever for causing the wagon-top to fall by its own weight, or by giving it a slight push backward.
The nature of my invention will be described below, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view partly broken. Fig. 2 is a detail section, the stop-web in position. Fig. 3 is a like view, the stop-web rotated out of position.
Like letters refer to like parts.
A is the wagon body, B the seat, and O O the bows having at the top the toggle-joints a.
At a suitable point on the floor of the body a standard, D, is placed, and to this is fulcrumed a U-shaped lever, D. To the upper end of the outer arm of said lever is hinged one end of a long red, E, the other end being hinged to a curved arm, F, rigidly attached to a rock-shaft, G, in the rear of the seat, said shaft being supported by lugs b 1), depending from the back of the seat.
H is a spring suitably attached to the body. Its free end engages with the arm of the lever nearest to it, and its purpose is to hold lever D uprightand prevent the shaft from accidentally turning when the top is up. At either end of the rockshaft G are double disks 0, having sufficient space bet-ween them to receive the lower end of slotted braces J, the other end being attached to the rear bow, as shown. To keep the said braces from leaving the disks, and to act as a guide, transverse pins f are passed through the disks and the slot of the braces, and to prevent said braces from sliding down between the disks when the top is up the lower perimeters of the disks are joined together by semicircular webs g, which forms a solid stop for the lower end of braces J to rest upon when the top is up.
A description of the operation will show the function of the parts.
When it is desired to lower the top, push nearly down the lever with the hand or foot. This will lower the free end of the spring, draw the rod E and arm F forward, and cause the rock-shaft to turn. The disks turning with the shaft, the webs g,which join the former, as described, will also rotate slightly forward, freeing the lower end of the braces and allowing them to slide down between the disks, after which they will assume a vertical position beside the body, the pinsf acting as a guide and preventing the braces from swinging out of the disks. The weight of the top or the draft of air against it is usually sufficient to cause the braces to slide down. If not,it is only necessary to push slightly backward on the bows. The top can be brought to a horizontal by collapsing the toggles a. To raise the top, push the lever farther down and bring the top forward with the hand, which will bring the braces up again. Then releasing the lever suddenly, the spring will throw it back, also rod E and arm F, causing the rock shaft and disks to turn back and bringing the disk-webs 9 under the lower end of the braces, when the top will be firmly supported.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the rock-shaft rotated substantially as shown, and the slotted braces, of devices, substantially as described, on the ends of said shaft for supporting the lower end of said braces when the top is up, and releasing and guiding them down beside the body when the top is lowered, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the ends of the rock-shaft rotated substantially as shown, of the double disks having a transverse pin and a semicircular connecting-web, the slotted braces, and the top, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the lever, of the the top braces when the, top is up, and to release and guide them down beside the body when said shaft is rotated to lower the top, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the body, of the lever, the spring, the long rod, the curved arm, the rockshaft, the double disks on the ends thereof having transverse pins fend semicircularconnecting-webs g, the slotted braces, and the bows, as set forth. :0
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
