Abstract

This novel hanger is designed for use in a bedroom as a convenient means of holding men''s garments, women''s garments or both simultaneously. It will also hold bedspreads, blankets, sheets, towels and the like. The holder follows a new concept of optionally using either an open drawer as a means of suspension of the hanger or a closet clothes pole.

Apparently no device has ever been offered wherein this combination is designated nor does there appear to be any such device wherein an open drawer of a chest of drawers serves as a means of suspension for said device.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION The primary object of this invention is in having a convenient hanger for use at bedtime by one or two individuals. At the time of retiring to bed a person is faced with the need for a place to put ones garments when disrobing. Also in cases where a person has his bed covered with a bedspread the additional need arises for a place to put the bedspread. The solution to the problem of providing for both needs is found in this invention which combines the means for holding various articles of personal clothing as well as bed coverings. In providing for both of the aforementioned needs, tidiness can readily be maintained in lieu of having clothes strewn over the floor, on chairs, doorknobs, etc. On the other hand those people who do maintain tidiness by using so-called valet chairs, single purpose bedspread holders or other garment holding devices will prefer the many advantages obtainable with the present invention. First and foremost is the advantage of combining the functional performance of two or more devices into a single device. Then there is the advantage of space saving which becomes apparent with either of two ways in which the device is utilized. One novel way of using this invention is to suspend it from the top drawer of a chest of drawers bearing in mind that it serves as a temporary hanger for one or two people to hang their articles of clothing at the time of retiring to bed. The method of attaching the device to the chest of drawers allows the structure to extend from the face of the chest in a substantially perpendicular position. The positioning of the device in this manner permits the prongs projecting from the two lateral members of the structure to extend upwardly in an angular position. These prongs together with the three bars bridging between the lateral members serve as hangers and holders for various articles of clothing and bed coverings. A husband and wife can for example each use three prongs and one crossbar for clothes while the third crossbar is used to hold a bedspread. Upon arising the clothes and bedspread are removed from the hanger which is then stored away under the bed or leaning against a wall on the floor in a closet thus taking none of the usable space in a room, as well as being out of sight until used again.

Another object of this invention is to serve as a basically permanent multipurpose hanger while suspended from a closet clothes pole. When used in this manner the same functional advantages described above would apply but it would not be necessary to remove the hanger from the clothes pole from day to day as would be customary when mounting the hanger on an open drawer of a chest of drawers. The maximum degree of usefulness of this invention is obtainable when thus mounted on a clothes pole. For example, the husband and wife who utilize the hanger when retiring will now find a convenient hanger when arising to hold those articles of clothing generally associated with retiring such as pajamas, robe, slippers, etc. which would be in need of a place for storage at the time of arising. Another valuable use for the hanger when mounted on a clothes pole is to hold a substantial number of blankets, bedsheets, towels, etc. especially if it is desired to have such items aired while being stored. When using the crossbars thusly the device can be tilted outwardly while suspended almost to a point of becoming horizontal in position and thereby facilitate placement of flat, folded items on the respective crossbars. Still another use for the hanger would be to hold damp or wet clothing to be dried. Meanwhile even though the crossbars are in full use while holding bed coverings or for drying clothes, the projecting prongs on each side of the device can hold numerous garments. It is noteworthy to mention at this point that the prongs will effectively hold a considerable amount of clothing including belts, ties, shoes, etc. Another object of the present invention is to provide a tool for quickly restoring tidiness or orderliness in a bedroom. Everyone is no doubt occasionally faced with the need to leave ones house in a great hurry allowing little or no time to sort, arrange, or properly store various garments. At such times the device becomes an ideal catchall for the garments until time permits making suitable disposition of said garments.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION The embodiment of the present invention comprises a structure fabricated in its entirety of standard steel bar stock of sufficient heft to resist distortion of the contours formed while supporting appreciable weight and yet being sufficiently malleable to permit forming with conventional, medium capacity forming tools. Standard bar stock of this guage and description is available with rounded edges along both longitudinal edges said rounded edges being recommended as most desirable for a device of this nature. The completed structure is a lever type device as viewed in FIG. 1 being suspended from the phantom sketched open drawer of a chest of drawers 9 or can be alternately used as viewed in FIG. 2 being suspended from a closet clothes pole l0 and it consists of seven individual parts welded together. These seven parts involve only three specific components consisting of two pieces of the double looped short lever arm ll extending between the curvature end 4 of bar hanger loop 5 and the outer flat face 11 of U-shaped fulcrum loop 7 at the opposite end the fulcrum loop being an integral part of the short lever arm 1; two pieces of extending long lever arms 2 whose length starts at flat face 11 and terminates at the end of the arm 8; and three pieces of the elongated U shaped part 3 bridging between the two extending long lever arms 2. The seven aforementioned component parts are then electrically welded together to produce the completed structure but before describing the welding process the design of the three basic components must be explained. At the end 4 of short lever arm 1 a semi circular loop 5 is formed having a radius in its curvature of sufficient length so that said loop 5 will freely clear the maximum diameter closet clothes poles in general use. When forming the semi-circular loop 5 the side 14 must be extended sufficiently so that the device does not slip off the clothes pole at times when it is tilted outwardly for purposes of placing blankets and the like on crossbars 6. The loops 5 on each side of the device hang from a closet clothes pole as shown in FIG. 2. At the other end of short lever arm 1 a U-shaped fulcrum loop 7 is formed so that the sides 11 and 12 of said loop 7 extending from the closed end 13 of said loop are at right angles with relation to the sides 14 and 15 extending from the closed end 4 of loop 5-. The purpose of fulcrum loops 7 on both sides of the device is to suspend said device on an open drawer of a chest of drawers, said fulcrum loop 7 fitting over the top edge of the face of the drawer as shown in FIG. 1. When defining the dimension of the closed end 13 of fulcrum loop 7 sufficient clearance must be allowed bearing in mind that the modern design of the face of many drawers is of considerable thickness. A further consideration in defining the dimensions of short lever arms 1 is the length of the section designated as side 15 of loop 5 and extending up to the intersection of the right angle formed by side 12 of fulcrum loop 7 said section should be enough to allow for the depth of construction of a cleat which generally appears on the underside of the top of a chest of drawers. Though no attempt has been made to show the cleat construction in the phantom sketch of the chest of drawers in FIG. 1 the said FIG. 1 should otherwise show quite clearly the way the design of short lever arm 1 serves to hold the device on an open drawer and it should be readily apparent that the weight of the device itself extending beyond short lever arm 1 will press the side 14 of loop 5 firmly against the underside of the top of the chest of drawers with fulcrum loop 7 becoming the fulcrum of the lever type force which holds the device firmly in place. When in position the device extends perpendicularly from the face of the chest of drawers at substantially a right angle. However, due to variations in the construction of chests of drawers and particularly the cleat attached to the underside of the top member, the angle of projection can vary one way or the other depending upon the particular chest. In any case it will not affect the functioning of the device for its intended purpose. The next component part of the structural makeup of my invention is long lever arm 2 which is nothing more than a cut offlength of the bar stock'from which this device is constructed and these two long lever arms 2 extend from fulcrum loops 7 in paralell position and on the same plane as the two short lever arms. The length of long lever arm 2 is defined with relation to the space maintained laterally and equidistantly between crossbars 6 so that it will be comparatively easy to place garments or bed coverings on said crossbars 6. Yet this length should be kept within reasonable limits bearing in mind that over extension of the length will exert considerable force on the chest when the device is fully loaded with garments. The third'structural component of this device is the elongated U-shaped crossbars 3. In defining the dimensions of the bottom 6 or closed portion of the elongated U- shaped crossbars 3 consideration must be given to the average width of a drawer in a chest of drawers so that the overall width of the device does not exceed the inside width of said drawer. In defining the length to which the sides 16 and 17 of the elongated U-shaped crossbars 32 extend, it is desirable to specify a reasonable maximum in order to increase the utility of the device to a maximum. However, it must be remembered that too great a length may decrease the desirability of the device in other respects. For example, one of the features of the device relating to storing it when not is use would be to store it under a bed. Obviously if the hanger prongs 16 and 17 are too long it would not be possible to clear the limited distance between the underneath side of a bedframe and the floor. Then too, if the prongs are over extended it might tempt the user of the device to overload it with garments creating the possibility of undue stress on the surfaces from which the device suspends. The tips 18 of prongs l6 and 17 should be suitably rounded and deburred bearing in mind that it might otherwise cause damage to delicate fabrics. Having thus described the three basic compnents from which the completed structure is fabricated the welding together of these components can readily and easily be accomplished in a low cost jig which holds the component parts in place while the welding is done. The holding jig for welding can easily be designed so that the parts are placed into position without the need of securing said components in the jig. Also the components would be placed in the welding jig so that they would be in an upside down position in relation to the position as viewed in FIG. 1. This upside down position makes it possible to complete a plurality of welds 19 which fasten the U-shaped crossbars 3 to long lever arms 2 and said welds become somewhat obscured from view when the device is placed in either of the two positions in which it is used. The weld points 20 which connect long lever arms 2 to short lever arms I extend vertically as viewed in FIG. 1 the full depth of arm 2 on each side of the arm. A final consideration in conjunction with the welding jig which hold the components is to place the elongated U-shaped crossbars 3 so that the sides 16 and 17 are extending angularly from the long lever arms 2 as prongs. This angular position is of importance when the device is suspended from a closet clothes pole 10 as shown in FIG. 2 so that articles of clothing placed on prongs 16 and 17 can easily be retained thereon.

After the welding is completed steps would be taken to provide a suitable finish in the form of plating or painting. The final operation would be to attach a protective lining 21 on the inside faces of fulcrum loop 7. These linings would be necessary to prevent damage to the drawer on which the device is mounted. The material used could be rubber, plastic, or heavy felt which would be bonded to the inside faces of fulcrum loop 7 with an adhesive.

Having thus described my invention in detail I claim:

1. A lever type hanger whose short lever arms include integral U shaped fulcrums with protective linings on the inside faces of said U shaped fulcrums and extending from said fulcrums paralell to one another, also being on the same plane as the short lever arms, are long lever arms connected transversely to the closed portion of elongated U shaped crossbars positioned with the sides of the U extending angularly from the long lever arms 2 as prongs.

Claims (2)

1. A lever type hanger whose short lever arms include integral U shaped fulcrums with protective linings on the inside faces of said U shaped fulcrums and extending from said fulcrums paralell to one another, also being on the same plane as the short lever arms, are long lever arms connected transversely to the closed portion of elongated U shaped crossbars positioned with the sides of the U extending angularly from the long lever arms 2 as prongs.

2. The device as recited in claim 1 wherein the end of the short lever arm is formed into a bar hanger loop.
