Objects of the invention are to provide a convertible crib which eliminates the various causes of infant crib fatalities and injuries, provides a clear view of an infant in the crib even from a distance, is adjustable in height, easily movable, assembled and disassembled with facility, repidity and convenience, readily convertible to a cradle, easily transportable in a vehicle, appealing and attractive to children and as an article of room furniture, odorless, non-toxic, non-flammable, requires no maintenance or repair, is kept clean with complete facility and ease, permits the insertion of an infant into the crib and the removal of the infant from the crib with safety, convenience, rapidity and comfort, is easily convertible to a youth bed, inexpensive in manufacture, and utilizes a standard crib mattress, standard springs and standard bedding.
In order that the invention may be readily carried into effect, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 is an end view of an embodiment of the convertible crib of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a side view of the embodiment of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a side view of the embodiment of FIG. I, of the side opposite that shown in FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a view of part of the convertible crib of the invention, partly in section;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view of parts of the convertible crib of the invention; and
FIG. 6 is a front view of a rocker arm of the convertible crib of the invention.
In the FIGS, the same components are identified by the same reference numerals.
The convertible crib of the invention comprises a bed part 1 (FIGS. 1 to 5) for accommodating a mattress 2 (FIGS. 1 and 2). The bed part 1 has a protective wall 3 (FIGS. 1 to 4) therearound with a clear plastic section 4 (FIG. 2) hingedly mounted therein for providing a view of an infant in the bed part 1 and for facilitating access thereto. The protective wall 3 may be molded from non-flammable plastic or resin-based materials, fibreglass, reinforced plastic, wood or paper products and/or any combination of these materials.
A plurality of legs 5, 6 (FIG. 2), 7 and 8 (not shown in the FIGS.) are provided.
A plurality of affixing devices 9, 10 (FIG. 2), 11 (FIG. 1) and 12 (not shown in the FIGS.) are provided. Each of the affixing devices is for a corresponding leg 5, 6, 7 and 8 and functions to removably affix the corresponding leg to the bed part 1. Each affixing device 9, I0, I 1 and 12 is removably affixed to the corresponding leg at one end, which is its lower end, and to the bed part 1 at its other, or upper, end in a manner whereby the bed part is adjustable in height relative to the leg.
Since each of the four affixing devices is identical to the others, the affixing device 9, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, is described herein. Each affixing device comprises an axial bore 13 in the corresponding leg 5. A corresponding projection 14 at the bottom of the bed part 1 has an axial bore 15 therein. A rod-like member 16 is accommodated in the bore 13 of the leg 5 and in the bore 15 of the projection I4. A bolt 17 in the projection 14 and a bolt 18 in the leg 5 secure the rod-like member 16 in position in the bores 13 and 15.
Each of the legs 5, 6, 7 and 8 has a caster 19, 20 (FIG. 2), 2] (FIG. 1) and 22 (not shown in the FIGS.), respectively, at the bottom thereof.
A pair of rocker arms, of which one rocker arm 23 is shown in FIG. 6, are provided. Each rocker arm has a pair of affixing devices 24 and 25 (FIG. 6) for removably affixing the rocker arm to the bed part 1. Each affixing device such as, for example, the affixing devices 24 and 25, is similar to the affixing devices 9, 10, II and 12 hereinbefore described and is adjustable in height relative to the corresponding rocker arm.
Vented design areas 26, 27, 28 and 29 are shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3. The vented design areas 26, 27, 28 and 29 permit air circulation at the mattress top from both ends and the sides.
While the invention has been described by means of a specific example and in a specific embodiment, we do not wish to be limited thereto, for obvious modifications will occur to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
We claim:
I. A convertible crib, comprising a bed part for accommodating a mattress. said bed part having a protective wall therearound with a clear plastic section hingedly mounted therein for providing a view of an infant in the bed part and for facilitating access thereto;
a plurality of legs; and
a plurality of affixing means each for a corresponding leg for removably affixing the legs to the bed part, each affixing means being removably affixed to the corresponding leg at one end and to the bed part at the other end in a manner whereby the bed part is adjustable in height relative to the leg, the affixing means being spaced a distance beneath the mattress to make them inaccessible to an infant in the crib.
2. A convertible crib as claimed in claim 1, wherein each affixing means comprises an axial bore in the corresponding Ieg, a corresponding projection at the bottom of the bed part having an axial bore therein, a rodlike member accommodated in the bore of the leg and in the bore of the projection and bolt type means in the leg and in the projection for securing the rod-like member in position in the bores.
3. A convertible crib as claimed in claim I, wherein each of the legs has a caster at the bottom thereof.
4. A convertible crib as claimed in claim I, further comprising a pair of rocker arms and a pair of affixing means each for a corresponding rocker arm for removably affixing the rocker arms to the bed part, each affixing means being adjustable in height relative to the corresponding rocker arm.
