Abstract

An electrical stop motion for a loom having a center-fork assembly includes an electrical contact carried adjacent a notch in the center-fork cam, said contact having a camming surface for engagement by the cam follower maintains contact therewith during movement of the cam follower in the absence of filling yarn and electrical means connecting the contact to the magnetic assembly of a warp stop motion for sufficient time to permit actuation of the linkage mechanism to stop the loom.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Looms currently in general use usually employ center-fork stop motion devices to stop the loom in the absence of or upon the occurrence of a faulty filling yarn. Stop motion devices positioned beyond the selvages such as illustrated in US. Pat. No. 2,906,298 are also often used as filling stop motions and such is illustrated in the patent as actuating a warp stop motion mechanism. An attempt has been made, as illustrated in US. Pat. No. 3,480,048, to provide an electrical center-fork stop motion device. As illustrated in the patent, a contact is positioned for receiving engagement by the center-fork cam follower of limited duration, and such has necessitated the provision of a special brake and clutch arrangement to stop the loom. In other words, the limited Contact provided the center-fork cam follower with the electrical contact would be insufficient to operate existing loom stopping mechanisms on the loom. US. Pat. No. 2,461,493 illustrates the use of a magnetic field employed with a stop motion of a center-fork type for the purpose of stopping the loom. Such devices do not appear to have come into generally accepted usage however.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a simple electrical stop motion of the centerfork type for effectively utilizing stopping mechanisms with which looms are equipped for the purpose of positively stopping the loom upon the occurrence of faulty filling supply.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a reliable electrical stop motion device for quickly and positively stopping the loom upon the occurrence of faulty filling.
Still another important object of the invention is the provision of an electrical stop motion of the center-fork type which is easily installed, maintained and operated.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION It has been found that providing a center-fork stop motion assembly with a contact following the contour of the notch in the cam for an extended portion thereof, permits a contact of sufficient duration therewith by the center-fork cam follower as to permit operation of an existing stopping mechanism, especially the linkage normally operated by the warp stop motion for operating the shipper handle of the loom. Quick, positive stops have been achieved for an extended period of time with very little maintenance utilizing such structure.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features thereof.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, wherein an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
FIG. 1. is aperspective view illustrating an electrical filling stop. motion for. aloom constructed in accor- DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The drawing illustrates a filling stop motion for a loom having a center-fork assembly with pivoted yarn feeler prongs, a cam, a cam follower moved responsive to movement of the prongs in the absence of filling yarn into a notch in the cam, and aknock-off motion with a magnet assembly normally electrically actuated by the drop wires of the warp stopmotion responsive to faulty warp yarn to actuate linkage for moving the shipper handle mechanism to stop the loom. The filling stop motion includes an electrical contact A carried adjacent the notch having a camming surface carried by the electrical contact for engagement by the cam follower for maintaining electrical contact therewith during movement of the cam follower responsive to movement of the prongs. Electricalmeans B connect theelectrical contact to the magnet assembly to actuate the'linkage to stop the loom in the absence of filling yarn. Thus, the electrical contact between the cammingsurface and the cam follower is maintained for sufficienttime to permit such actuation of the linkage; 1
FIG. 1 illustrates a filling stop motion for a loom having a center-fork assembly positioned adjacent and for wardly of the lay 10 which carries the usual reed wires 11. The center-fork assembly includes pivoted yarn feeler prongs 12 carried for pivotal movement within a housing 13. The housing is carried upon the usual crank shaft 14 which normally actuates suitable linkage mechanism (not shown) for stopping the loom. Also positioned upon the crank shaft 14 is a bracket 15 for carrying the usual cam follower, broadly designated by 16. The cam follower 16, which is constructed of plastic in this instance, has a notch 17 therein for receiving a cam follower 18. The cam follower is pivotally mounted within the housing 13, as illustrated at 19, and has fixed connection as by screws 20 with the feeler prongs 12. As is customarily the case, the transverse cam follower 18 is moved responsive to the movement of the prongs 12 in the absence of filling yarn downwardly, and thence, rearwardly into the notch 17. The electrical contact A is preferably imbedded within the notch 17 and includes a camming surface extending first downwardly into the notch, as illustrated at 21. The camming surface thence extends rearwardly along the base of the notch, as illustrated at 22, and thence, upwardly, as illustrated at 23 for limiting further rearward movement of the cam follower 18.
It will be observed that the plastic cam 16 is preferably mounted as by spaced screws 24 adjacent the metallic cam 25 as a support and a convenience in mounting. The cam of the present invention is constructed of non-conductive plastic and carries an electrical means in the form of a bus bar 26 imbedded therein for connecting the electrical contact A to mechanism actuated by the warp stop motion for stopping the loom. The electrical means B includes fastening means 27 for securing a conductor 28 to the bus bar 26.
A bracket 29 is provided for carrying a shunt magnet assembly upon the loom frame (not shown as by a bolt 29a). The magnet has suitable connection, as illustrated at 31, with the warp stop motion mechanism (not shown) through an outlet box 32. Upon actuation of the warp stop motion mechanism, or upon the cam follower achieving sufficient contact with the electrical contact therewith, as would occur in the event of absence or a faulty condition of the filling yarn, the magnetic wire 33 will be moved upwardly by the magnet 30 to place a pivoted link 34 in position for engagement by the usual knock-offbunter 35. As illustrated, the knock-off bunter is carried by knock-off cam follower 36 which is, in turn, operated by the knock-off cam 37 in the usual manner. The knock-off 34 is provided with the usual spring 34a for returning same to the position illustrated. However, the linkage mechanism just described, when actuated by the knock-off bunter 35, moves to the right in FIG. 2 to move the shipper handle 38 to broken line position causing the loom to come to a prompt and positive stop. The knock-off link 34 and spring 34a are carried by the housing 39 which moves the knock-off rod 40 to the right in FIG. 2. The linkage mechanism further includes the link 41 integral with the shipper handle 38, which has pivotal connection as at 42 with the knock-off rod 40.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A filling stop motion for a loom having a centerfork assembly with pivoted yarn feeler prongs, a cam, a cam follower moved responsive to movement of said prongs in the absence of filling yarn into a notch in said cam, and a knock-off motion with a magnet assembly normally electrically actuated by the drop wires of the warp stop motion responsive to faulty warp yarn to actuate linkage for moving the shipper handle mechanism to stop the loom, said filling stop motion comprising:
an electrical contact imbedded in the base of the notch of said cam to form an exposed camming surface,
said camming surface being engaged bysaid cam follower for maintaining electrical contact therewith during movement of the cam follower in response to downward movement of said prongs, said camming surface extending downwardly and thence upwardly so as to limit further rearward movement of the cam follower; and
electrical means including a conductor imbedded in said cam connecting said electrical contact to said magnet assembly and said cam follower for actuating said magnet assembly to actuate said linkage to stop the loom in the absence of filling yarn; whereby said electrical contact between said camming surface and said cam follower is maintained for sufficient time to permit such actuation of said linkage.

Claims (1)

1. A filling stop motion for a loom having a center-fork assembly with pivoted yarn feeler prongs, a cam, a cam follower moved responsive to movement of said prongs in the absence of filling yarn into a notch in said cam, and a knock-off motion with a magnet assembly normally electrically actuated by the drop wires of the warp stop motion responsive to faulty warp yarn to actuate linkage for moving the shipper handle mechanism to stop the loom, said filling stop motion comprising: an electrical contact imbedded in the base of the notch of said cam to form an exposed camming surface, said camming surface being engaged by said cam follower for maintaining electrical contact therewith during movement of the cam follower in response to downward movement of said prongs, said camming surface extending downwardly and thence upwardly so as to limit further rearward movement of the cam follower; and electrical means including a conductor imbedded in said cam connecting said electrical contact to said magnet assembly and said cam follower for actuating said magnet assembly to actuate said linkage to stop the loom in the absence of filling yarn; whereby said electrical contact between said camming surface and said cam follower is maintained for sufficient time to permit such actuation of said linkage.
