$PEQIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,129, dated July 31, 1888.
Application filed January 23, 1888. Serial No. 261,659. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIs HENRY WET- MORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Burlington, in the county of Chit- 5 tenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention and is a front view. Fig. 2 is a detail and a perspective view. Fig. 3 is also a detail and a perspective View.
This invention has relation to suspenders; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of devices, ashereinafterset forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the main Suspender-straps, which pass over the shoulders of the wearer. The back portions of these straps are connected by a sliding device, B, which consists of the transverse cord or strap and the metallic slides D, which are attached to the ends of the cord 0 and are arranged for sliding adjustment on the bands A. Each slide D preferably consists of the slotted plate shown, having at its inner end a small clamp, a, notched to engage the inner end bar of the slide, and provided with small lugs b, adapted to secure the clamp to the base of the slide in a secure manner, but so that the clamp will have a little pivotal play. By the adjustment of the connecting device B up or down on the main straps A the suspenders may be readily adapted to suit persons of different breadth across the shoulders. In this manner the suspenders are easily rendered comfortable by the wearer.
E designates ordinary buckles at the front ends of the main straps A, adapted to hold the front loops, 0, of the straps, which are provided with the connections G for the button cords H.
The connection G consists of the attachment-loop g, on which is pivoted the branched o hanger a, between the arms of which is pivoted the convex rocking clamp 70. This clamp 7c is made of a single piece of metal, having its end portions formed with lateral flanges which are bent upward to receive between them the middle of the buttoircord H. Said flanges may be pressed down upon the cord to make the attachment more secure, if desired, but this is not essential. The middle offsets,
m, of said clamp are bent downward to form lugs which are pivoted to the arms of the hanger. This rocking clamp is designed to give the parts free play, so that they will yield to the movements of the wearer especially in walking, oscillating at every step or bodily motion, and in this way avoiding wear 6 of the cord.
The rear ends of the main straps A are pr0- vided with the clamp F, to which are attached the crossloops L L, so that the cord of each loop is attached to both clamps and crosses the opposite loop above its most dependent portion, to which the rear buttonloop attachment, V, is connected. This attachment V consists of the arcshaped wire having its ends spirally coiled, as at Z, to receive the cross 7 5 loop cords, and carrying the dependent clamp 2, which is provided with an eye, 3, which is movable on the are bearing V, its motions being governed by the movements of the wearer. The rear button-loop is fastened in the clamp 2. These are bearings move easily through the eyes of the clamps 2, according to the motions of the wearer, and are especially designed to allow free upward movement of the arm or shoulder without lifting the trousers. \Vhen either arm is raised, the are bearings shift through the eyes of the clamp to one side, an tomatically returning when the arm falls to normal position. I11 this manner it is designed to provide a pair of suspenders which 0 will readily yield to the wearers motions and will at the same time serve their ofiice in an efficient manner.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 5 1s 1. The combination, with the main suspendenstraps and the slide D, of the connecting-cord 0, attached to clamps a, notched to engage the end bar of the slide, and having the lugs b to secure the clamps to the base of the slide, substantially as specified.
2. In a pair ofsuspenders, the convex rocking clamp 7r, carrying the button-cord and pivoted to the branches of the dependent hanger n, and having the extended end p01 5 tions, substantially as specified.
3. In a pair of suspenders, the combination, with the main straps and their rear clamps, of the cross-loops L L, respectively attached to both of the rear clamps of the main straps and 10 carrying the rear button attachments of the suspenders, substantially as specified.
4. In a pair of suspenders, an arc-shaped bearing, V, secured to the rear suspenderloop and carrying the button-loop clamp 2, having an eye, 8, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, With the main suspender-straps A, of the-adj ustable back strap, 0, the rear double loops, L L, the rocking clamps 7c, and the arc bearings V, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIS HENRY WETMORE. Witnesses:
