Description

(No Model.)
J. OBRIEN.
ANVIL.
No. 386,755. Patented July 24, 1888.
W/ TN; @5558 IN VKNTOR M u fla UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH OBRIEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ANVIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,755, dated July 24, 1888.
Application filed April 28, 1888. Serial No. 272,207.
.To aZZ whmn it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, JOSEPH OBRIEN, of the city of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Anvils, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This improvement in anvils consists in an attachable and detachable block making the working-face of the anvil, and means for fastening it to the anvil, all substantially as described.
In the drawings the present invention is illustrated, and Figure 1 is a side elevation of the anvil. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A is the anvil-block proper, having a working-face, B, all of the usual construction except as to this invention. The working-face B is of a block, 0, rectangular in shape and fitting a correspondinglyshaped re cess, D, of the upper side of the anvil-block A. This face block 0 has a notch, a, at each end fitting over correspondiugly-shaped end lugs or tenons, d, of the recess D of the anvil and a centrally-located spindle or shank, E, preferably square-sided, entered into a correspondingly-shaped bore, F, of the anvil.
G is an opening from side to side and through the body or web H of the anvil, and the shank E of the face-block 0 projects into this opening, and its projecting portion J has a vertical slot, K, to receive a pin, L, of flat shape, and which, entered therein and across and bearing against the upper edge of said opening G, draws and holds the face-block to a firm seat and position by the bearing of its (No model.)
under edge, L which is tapering, against the lower end, K of said slot.
From the description it is plain the working-face of the anvil is attachable and detachable, and, attached, secured firmly in place. This enables a working-face when worn or more or less useless to beremoved and another one substituted therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. An anvil-block having an attachable and detachable block, 0, with a workingface, B, in combination with a recess, D, in the anvil to receive and means to secure said block 0 on the anvil, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. An anvil-block having an attachable and detachable block, 0, with a working-face, B, in combination with a recess, D, in the anvil to receive said block, and means consisting of a shank or stem, E, of said face-block C, a bore, F, of the anvil to receive and a slot, K, in said shank E, and a pin, L, entered in said slot and making bearings at its upper edge against the upper side of an opening, G, in the anvil, and at its under edge against the lower end of said slot, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH O BRIEN.
