UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES NEWMON, OF HAW RIDGE, ALABAMA.
FLUE-CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,600, dated July 24, 1888.
Application filed February 18, 1888. Serial No. 264,446. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beitknown that I, JAMES NEWMON, of Haw Ridge, in the county of Coffee and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Flue-Cleaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side View of my improved fluecleaner. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
In the drawings, 10 represents the cleanerhead, which head is formed with a flat-faced flange, 11, in' which flange there are formed a number of slots, 12. The head 10 has a central bore, 13, that is threaded at each end, the thread at the outer end of the head being arranged for engagement with a set-screw or bolt, 11, the shank of which passes through a clamping-plate, 15.
Between the clamping-plate 15 and the flange 11 of the head 10 I place a number of segmental cleaning-blades, 16, the peripheral edges of which are preferably serrated, as shown at a. Each of these blades 16 is provided with a cross -piece, 17, which cross pieces ride in the slots 12 of the flange 11 and in other slots, 18, that are formed in the clamping-plate 15. By this arrangement it follows that the blade 16 may be moved toward or from the screw-shank, thus providing for the adjustment of the blades for use in connection with flues of different diameters.
A handle or stem, 20, one end of which is threaded as shown at b, is brought into engagementwith the thread formed in the bore of the unflanged end of the head 10, and upon this handle there is mounted a gage, 21, which is bound to the handle by a set-screw, 22, this arrangement providing for the adjustment of the gage toward or from the head 10.
In operation the cleaner head is inserted in the flue and a reciprocating motion is imparted to the implement, the blade 16 having been properly set, the gage 21 being set so as to prevent the head from being forced in too far.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a flue cleaner, a head having a transversely-apertured flat outer end, a circular series of flat scrapingplates having transverse bars projecting from their opposite faces, and an apertured clampingplate between which the said plates are held with their bars projecting-into the apertures in the head and plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a flue-cleaner, the combination, with a head formed with a flat-faced flange and with apertures 12, of a clamping-plate, 15, formed with apertures 18, serratedfaccd blades 16, provided with bars 17, which rest in the apertures 12 and 18, and aolamping-screw, 14, substantially as described.
111 JAMES X NEVVMON.
