Abstract

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the mechanism comprising the piston and piston connecting rod of the internal combustion engine. In the subject disclosure, the combustion pressure forces acting on the piston are transferred to the connecting rod through an intermediate linkage. The linkage is pivotly journaled to the piston at one end and to the connecting rod at the other end at a point below the connecting rod wrist pin. The upper extreme end of the connecting rod is pivotly journaled in a piston sleeve which is slidably mounted on the interior surfaces of the piston. The lower end of the connecting rod is rotatively mounted on the crankpin. Reactive forces generated by rotation of the crankpin about the crankshaft as its revolves are transmitted to the piston through the connecting rod and the intermediate linkage as a lever of the second class.

O'Connor [57] ABSTRACT This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the mechanism comprising the piston and. piston connecting rod of the internal combustion engine. In the subject disclosure, the combustion pressure forces acting on the piston are transferred to the connecting rod through an intermediate linkage. The linkage is pivotly journaled to the piston at one end and to the connecting rod at the other end at a point below the connecting rod wrist pin. The upper extreme end of the connecting rod is pivotly journaled in a piston sleeve which is slidably mounted on the interior surfaces of the piston. The lower end of the connecting rod is rotatively mounted on the crankpin. Reactive forces generated by rotation of the crankpin about the crankshaft as its revolves are transmitted to the piston through the connecting rod and the intermediate linkage as a lever of the second class.

At both ends of pin 8 said connecting link 3 a manner as herinafter set forth, an engine of the afore mentioned character comprising a plurality of pistons and piston connecting rods in which the reciprocating motion of the piston is not limited to the motion imposed by the engine crankshaft crankpin.
Another very important object of .the invention is to provide an engine of the character described which will allow an initial design setting and an allowance for the mechanical adjustment of the piston position in such a manner as to decrease the amount of harmful emission in the exhaust product during the combustion process.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an engine of the character described in which the initial piston setting at the top-dead-center position is such that the combustion pressure during the initial expansion cycle is delayed thereby allowing the crankshaft to develope more efficient crank angles at the higher cylinder pressures and thereby increasing the net rotative effort.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an engine of the character described which will allow its beneficial operation within the conditions of the several engine combustion cycles employed in the reciprocating type of internal combustion engine.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification and drawing presented.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS There is presented, as part of .the specification, a drawing which shows the components comprising the invention.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view principally in vertical longitudinal section through a portion of a piston constructed in accordance with the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT is pivotly mounted. The center of pin 9 is journaled in said connecting link 3 and in the piston bosses [0 of said piston 2 at each end.
The assembly, said piston connecting rod 1, said pin 5 in said journal 4, and said pin 8 in said journal 7 constitute a lever of the second class which when pivoted about said wrist pin 5 activate the said connecting link 3 which contains said pin 9 which is pivotly mounted at both ends in said piston 2 bosses 10 which cause the piston to rise or fall relative to the position of said pin 5. The said piston connecting rod 1 is rotatably mounted on the engine crankpin 13 in the conventional manner by journal 11 held in place by bolts 12.
When the engine crankshaft revolves it causes the said piston connecting rod 1 angle to change relative to the cylinder axial centerline by pivoting on said pin 5. The changing of the said angle causes said connecting linkage 3 to exert a force on said pin 9 which causes the said piston 2 to be raised or lowered relative to the position of said pin 5. Operation in this manner, considered in conjunction with the motion imparted to the said piston 2 by the engine crankpin 13, allows a greater margin of control of the working volumes above the said piston 2 as they develope during the combustion cycle which when analytically determined and set are more conducive to complete and efficient fuel combustion.
What is claimed is:
1. In an internal combustion engine, a piston, a piston slide slidably mounted inside said piston, a wrist pin extending transversly across said piston slide each end of which is pivotly mounted in said piston slide, a connecting rod having a small journal at one end which holds said wrist pin, below said small journal and positioned at one side of the longitudinal axis of said connecting rod a second small journal on said connecting rod, said second small journal holding a pin, the ends of said pin extending to both sides of said connecting rod, a connecting link being pivotly attached to each end of said pin, said connecting link holding a second pin also pivotly attached, said second pin extending transversely across said piston and journaled at each end in said piston, at the opposite end of said connecting rod a large journal for rotatively mounting on an internal combustion engine crankpin.

Claims (1)

1. In an internal combustion engine, a piston, a piston slide slidably mounted inside said piston, a wrist pin extending transversly across said piston slide each end of which is pivotly mounted in said piston slide, a connecting rod having a small journal at one end which holds said wrist pin, below said small journal and positioned at one side of the longitudinal axis of said connecting rod a second small journal on said connecting rod, said second small journal holding a pin, the ends of said pin extending to both sides of said connecting rod, a connecting link being pivotly attached to each end of said pin, said connecting link holding a second pin also pivotly attached, said second pin extending transversely across said piston and journaled at each end in said piston, at the opposite end of said connecting rod a large journal for rotatively mounting on an internal combustion engine crankpin.
