FRANK MESKER AND HENRY F. EDWARDS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PLATE-METAL COLUMN.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,763, dated July 10, 1888.
Application filed January .28, 1888. Serial No. 262,270.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK MEsKER and HENRY F. EDWARDS, of St. Louis, Missouri, have jointly made a new and useful Improve ment in Plate-Metal Columns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The improvement relates to plate-metal columns used in buildingfronts, and composed, mainly, of metallic plates and angle-irons.
The improvement consists in the special shape and combination of the parts composing the column, substantially as is hereinafter described and claimed, and as illustrated in the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved column as before being ornamented; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the column ornamented; Fig. 4, a view in perspective, from its front, of the ornamented column; Fig. 5, a vertical section, upon an enlarged scale, showing in detached parts the front portion of the ornamented column; and Fig. 6, a horizontal section, upon an enlarged scale, on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The column in its most approved form consists of the following elements: a face, E, extended at each side edge to form a flange, 6, two cheeks, A A, two angleirons, G G, and a wooden filling-piece, G. The face is a metal- (No model.)
lic sheet either plain or molded. The cheeks are respectively flat metallic sheets riveted at the front edge to the face flanges and at the rear edge to the angle-irons, as shown in Fig. 6. The angle-irons in turn are fastened, say, by means of the screws I, to the filling-piece O. This last-named part, however. might be secured directly to the cheeks. The angleirons are useful in stiffening the structure, as well as a means for uniting the filling-piece with the cheeks. If desired, ornamental portions-such as the base F, capital A and the portion H-may, by means of fastenings f, be attached to the face.
Ve claim 1. The combination of the face having the described flanges formed in one piece there with, the checks, the angleirons, and the filling-piece, said face flanges lapping upon the outer face of the cheeks, respectively, substair tially as described.
2. The combination of the face having the described flanges formed in one piece therewith, the cheeks, and the filling-piece, said face-flanges lapping upon the outer face of the cheeks, respectively, substantiallyasdescribed FRANK MESKER. HENRY F. EDWARDS.
