Be 1t known that I, SHERMAN S. PEARL, a

in the courity ofLinn and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has reference to that class of devices which are designated as carpetstretchers, and it has for its object to produce a device of this kind which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, ease of operation and manipulation, and general efficiency.

To these ends, and to such others as the illvention may relate, the same consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then specifically defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is structed in accordance wit-h myinvention, the various parts being shown in the positions they assume in grasping the carpet preparatory to stretching the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the parts being shown in the positions assumed when the carpet has been drawn into place.

Referring now to the details of the drawings, A represents an upright formed at its upper end with asuitable handle, A and provided at its lower end with a grip, A. This grip may consist of one or more points, as shown; or, if desired, any device suited to the purpose may be substituted therefor.

B is a curved rack secured at its upper end to the upright A, and provided at intervals along its upper surface with notches a a, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.

0 is an arm secured at one end to the up right A at a point near its lower extremity. The outer end of the arm 0 is secured to the lower end of the curved rack 13; or, if for any reason it should be desired, the arm 0 and rack B may be formed of a single piece of metal bent into the desired form.

D is a lever, the lower portion of which is bifurcated, as shown, and its upper end is furnished with a handle, D The bifurcated portion of the lever is adapted to fit over the rackbar and arm 0, and is pivotally connected with the arm O at a point near its junction with the upright A.

E is a rod, one end of which is embraced within and pivoted to the bifurcated portion of the lever D at a point near its lower end. The rod E extends backward, passing through the opening I), formed at the junction of the arm 0 and the rack B, and is provided at its outer end with any suitable form of clamping device, as F, adapted to securely hold the carpet.

G is a dog or pawl pivotally connected to the lever D, and adapted to be thrown out of contact with the notches of the rackba-r by means of a suitable rod, G and thumb-lever G", as will be readily understood.

From the foregoing description the operation of the device will be readily understood. The grip at the lower end of the uprighthaving been secured in place, the lever is thrown backward, so as to occupy the position indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the carpet is grasped by the claw F. The lever is then thrown forward until the parts assume the positions indicated in Fig. 2, the dog G serving to retain the same in position until it may be desired to release them. 8

Having thus described my invention and set forth its merits, what I desire'to secure by Letters Patent is-- 1.
