2 Claims, 7 Drawing Figures 1 LADIES UNDERGARMENT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to ladies panty garments and constitutes an improvement of the ladies garments described and claimed in U.S. Pat. No. 2,772,419 issued to the same inventor hereof. That patent describes and claims a novel panty garment made up of blanks of material without the need for an excessive number of seams, such that the wearer has maximum freedom of movement, yet at the same time the panty conforms to the body without riding up on or chafing the wearer.
In later years, it has become desirable'to include additional features in ladies panty garments. Thus, in accordance with the present invention, it has been found desirable to have absorbent material, such as terrycloth, placed in the crotch section. However, without the present invention addition of such afeature to the panty garment described above could detract from its novel features by necessitating extra seams, thus detracting from its unique stretchability and comfort.
characteristics. Further, the presence of such a seam would interrupt the ventilation pattern of the garment causing poorer ventilation and discomfort. It is therefore the object of this invention to provide an improved ladies panty garment containing an absorbent crotch section without detracting from the unique features of the ladies panty garment described and claimed in U.S. Pat. No. 2,772,419.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The above-mentioned object is accomplished by altering the reinforcing section of the prior art garment so that it not only reinforces the rear section, but also acts to allow an absorbent crotch piece to be secured to its end without the need for additional external seams in they main crotch section. Further, since one end of the added absorbent crotch material is connected to the reinforcing material ratherthan to the main garment itself, a continuous air space is maintained between the main garment on the 'one hand, and the reinforcing material and absorbent crotch piece on the other hand insuring good ventilation.
Other advantages of the presentinvention will become apparent from the following description and drawings where:
FIG. 1 is an elevation of the front of the'garment.
FIG. 2 is an elevation of the rear of the garment.
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the blank used in forming the 'main body of the garment.
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the blank used in forming the rear and crotch section of the garment.
FIG. 5 is a plan view of the blank used to reinforce the rear of the garment and act as an anchor for the absorbent-crotch piece.
FIG. 6 is a plan view of the absorbent crotch piece of the garment.
FIG. 7 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the crotch section of the garment;
Referring first to FIG. 3, the main blank 10 is of generally rectangular shape having an upper substantially straight edge 11, opposed side edges 12 and 13 which are substantially straight and outwardly inclined, and a lower edge having a plurality of concavely curved sections including a relatively short central edge section 14 and a pair of spaced somewhat longer edge sections 'and has a straight upper edge 15 and 16 which become substantially straight as shown at 1 7 and 18 terminating at the bottom of edges 12 and 13 respectively. The material of this blank is designed to be stretchable mainly in the direction of the arrow shown in FIG. 3 which is in a direction parallel to its upper edge, i.e., around the waist of the wearer or in a longitudinal direction. The blank is somewhat stretchable in the direction from top to bottom of the wearer, i.e., in the vertical direction, but this stretchability should be of a lower order than in the longitudinal direction.
Referring 'nowto FIG. 4, the second blank 19, which forms the crotch and rear section is of elongated shape 20, a somewhat shorter convexly curved lower edge 21, and opposed side edges, including straight upper edge sections 22 and 23 and somewhat shorter concavely curved lower edge sections 24 and 25. This blank is mainly stretchable in the vertical direction as shown by the arrow in FIG. 4 although it also may stretch somewhat in the longitudinal direction.
Referring now to FIG. 5, the third blank 26,.which reinforcesthe crotch and rear section and provides an anchor for the absorbent crotch piece is also of elongated shape having-a straight uppe'redge 27, a somewhat shorter concavely curved lower edge 28, and opposed side edges including straight upper edge sections 29 and 30 of the same length as edges 22 and 23 of blank 19, and shorter outwardly inclined lower edges 31 and 32. This blank is also mainly stretchable in the vertical direction as shown by the arrow in FIG. 5 although some stretchability in the longitudinal direction is permitted.
Referring now to FIG. 6, the fourth blank 33 which is generally made of absorbent material is also of elongated shape having a convex upper edge 34 having the same curvature as edge 28 of blank 26, concave side edges 35 and 36 having the same curvatureand length as edges 24 and 25 of blank 19 and a convex bottom edge 37 having'the same curvature and length as edge 21 of blank 19. This blank is also mainly stretchable in the vertical direction and somewhat stretchable in the longitudinal direction.
When the garment is assembled so as just to produce a reinforced garment as illustrated in U.S. Pat. No. 2,772,419, i.e., without the novel features of the present invention, edges 21 of two blanks 19 are stitched to lower edge 14 of blank 10 to form stitch line '38, as shown in FIG. 1 and edges 12 and 13 of blank 10 are stitched to edges 22 and 23 respectively of two blanks 19 to form stitch lines 39 and 40 respectively as shown in FIG. 2. Without the present invention, if one wanted to add an absorbent crotch piecesuch as that illustrated in FIG. 6 tothis garment, it would be placed in the garment and edge 37 stitched to stitch line 38 while edges 35 and 36 were stitched to edges 24 and 25. Edge 34 would then have to be stitched to blank 19 resulting in an unwanted additional external seam such as that shown in dotted lines at 41 in FIG. 2. This unwanted seam would detract from the unique stretchability characteristics of the garment as well as interrupting the air circulation between the rear andcrotch sections.
In accordance with the present invention, these problems are eliminated by using the rear reinforcing blank as an anchor for the absorbent crotch piece and thus,
replacing the unwanted extra external seam with an internal seam which does not harm stretchability or alter the ventilation. In assembling the garment, the absorbent crotch piece 33 is first attached to reinforcing blank 26 by stitching edge 34 to edge 28. Then when the garment is assembled, as described above, when edges 12 and 13 of blank are stitched to edges 22 and 23 of blank 19, edges 29 and 30 of blank 26 are stitched in along the same stitch lines 39 and 40 and edges 31 and 32 are simply stitched to the top of edges 24 and 25. Also, when edge 21 is stitched to edge 14, edge 37 is also stitched in along the same stitch line 38. By following this procedure, the result is a ladies panty garment which contains an absorbent crotch piece but which has no external extra seams such as 41 to detract from the stretchability characteristics of the garment and at the same time has a reinforced rear section without detracting from the ventilation characteristics of the garment since air is free to circulate through the entire length of the rear and crotch section without interruption. Also, if the absorbent crotch piece is made of a material which is of relatively coarse threads as compared to the relatively fine threads of the balance of the garment, then these relatively coarse threads will provide extended bearing points which will help to keep the absorbent crotch piece separated from the rear and crotch blank further insuring that air is free to circulate between themfuther increasing the ventilation characteristics of the garment. This feature of the invention is illustrated in FIG. 7 which shows an enlarged crosssectional view of the crotch section of the garment. Threads 42 are the absorbent coarse threads which make up crotch piece 33. Because of their coarseness in relation to the fine threads which make up the balance of the garment, such as the crotch section 19' of the rear and crotch blank 19, by bearing against the fine threads of crotch section 19, they serve to further keep the crotch piece 33 and the crotch section 19' separated, further increasing the ventilation characteristics of the garment. After the above assembly process has been completed, appropriateelastic means are attached to the waist and leg hole sections to complete the garment.
