IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS FOR CUTTING AND BEVELING BARREL-HEADS.4

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,520, dated May l2, 1863; antedatedv October 11, 1862.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM WATKINs, of Crete, in the county of Will, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Circle-Jointer for Beveling and Fitting Heads to Barrels; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a iull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents the circular block, having its ened to the block by nuts 1),)fextending behind the block. This iron arm C has two branches, c c, that pass through the circular block A to brace the block equally and regularly in its movement, as the handle B is pressed upon and shoved with the tool to the light or left during the cutting and beveling operation. Immediately in iront is an upright toothed knife or cutter, E, which is fastened to block A by a mortise and screws, G, and by Which the head of a barrel is cut round. Underneath the block A is a planing knife, H, set obliquely across the center of the block in a mortise, and fastened to the block A by a screw-bolt, J, extending through the block. This knife planes and bevels the edge of barrelheads. In the arm C is a long slot, in which the adjustable thumb-screw K, with its sharp point L, operates, so as to strike the center and widen or diminish the size ofthe circle so that the tooth G cuts the barrel-head to any required size.

I ain aware that tools for cutting and bevelingbarrel'heads have been made and used with a tooth and planing knife and a pivoted point to strike the circle correctly, but these I I do not claim. Therefore, handle B at top, with an iron arm, C, (fastl What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improvement in tools for cutting out and beveling barrelheads, is-

The curved block D, provided with the handle B, and fitted with tooth E and knife H, when used in combination with the slotted arm C and adjusting-screw pivot K, and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
