UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARD COOPER, OF LA PORTE CITY, IOWA.
PAPER AND LETTER FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,892, dated June 19, 1888.
Application filed January 25, 1888. Serial No. 261,885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARD COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Porte City, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Paper and Letter Files, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in paper and letter file's; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device open.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the base or back piece, to which the wires are attached.
Bis a hook that stands with its point upward, and has its vertical shank or rear arm rigidly secured to the back-piece at b. The point I) of said hook is conical and regular.
0 is a wire retaining-frame similar to that of which the hook is made and having avertical arm, d, which is journaled in metallic loops a, secured to the baek-piece.
Above the highest loop the wire frame O bends horizontally and curves outwardly and toward the hook, forming an arm, D. When abovethehook, the said arm bends downwardly in a curve, d till it becomes vertical, and has in its end a socket, (1, into which the point b fits closely, the wires being of the same diameter, and the wire frame O set so as to spring down on the hook and hold tight the joint between the point b and socket d.
If desirable or convenient, the wire and hook may be attached by the means described directly to the side of a desk or to a counter; but it is preferable to have the base-piece, which allows the device to be put in place and removed more easily and with more dispatch.
It is evident that the wire serves as an effect ive guard to prevent displacement of the papers on the hook, and when necessary to add a new paper thereto the wire can be lifted and turned off, the paper put in place, and the wire again placed on the hook.
Should it be necessary to remove and examinea particularpaper, thosethereabove can he slipped off the hook upon the horizontal arm D of the wire frame. The wire frame can be then turned off and swung away, the paper removed, consulted, and replaced, and the wire frame again turned on thehook and the papers thereon brought to their original position above the paper consulted, so that thus the order on the file is not disturbed.
Having described my invention, I claim- The improved letter and paper file herein described and shown, comprising a horizontal base, a vertical shank secured rigidly thereto near one end, and the retainingframe consisting of a wire bent to form a vertical arm journaled to the opposite end of the base, then bent outward from the base, then horizontally toward the hook, and then vertically downward, and having asocket in its end to engage the point of the hook, as set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
WARD COOPER.
