SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,543, dated May 29, 1888.

Be it known that I, ROBERT M. RIGBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kan sas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Book and Index, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to that class of combined book and index wherein the index, formed independent of the book, is connected with the book in such manner as to enable it to be extended or withdrawn from within the book, so that both the index and book may be referred to simultaneously and the leaves of each be turned without interfering with or overlapping theleaves of the other, and when not in use he confined between the book-covers. It relates more particularly, however, to a mode of connecting the index with the book so as to facilitate a more ready and convenient handling thereof.

To this end the present invention consists, essentially, in uniting one edge of one of the leaves of the index to the edge of one of the leaves of the book, whereby the index may be confined or withdrawn from between the covers of the book for reference or other use.

As a clearer understanding of the present improvement'may be best had by a detailed description of apractical embodiment thereof, all preliminary description will be omitted and such detailed description will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined book and index united, in accordance with the present invention, and illustrating the index in the act of being withdrawn or extended from within the book. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, the index being shown in its'normal position within the book. Fig. 3 is a like view illustrating the index withdrawn or extended from within the book in position for use; and Fig. 4, a perspective view showing an operation of the improved index, to be hereinafter particularly referred to.

The book A, with which an index is to be combined, is provided with any ordinary or suitable covers, B, and may be a letterpress copy, account, or other book. The index D,

of any form the requirements of its use may dictate, consists of a number of leaves bound in book form, that are provided or not along their edges with suitable referencetags, E, bearing letters arranged thereon in alphabetical order, as shown, which index-leaves may be confined or not between suitable covers, F.

The book and index are combined by uniting the edge of one of theleaves C of the book A (it may be either its first or last leaf, according to whether theindexis placed atthe front or rear of the book, and preferably the latter) to the edge of either the first or last leaf, or of the front or back of the cover F of the index D. The union between the two leaves or the book-leaf and the indexcover may be effected by any suitable means, so as to providea flexible connection, d, therebetween, and thus enable the index D' to be folded between said leaf C and the book-cover, as in Fig. 2, or be unfolded therefrom, so as to extend beyond the book and cover, as in Fig. 3.

While it is obvious that the initial or last leaf, C, of the book A may be used for connecting the index thereto, the book will preferably be provided with a special leaf of consider able strength, and bound or united firmly to the book-covers B, as at a point, a, or at such a point distant from the edge of the cover B as will provide room enough to receive theindex when folded therebctwcen, as in said Fig. 2, from which it will be seen that when it is desired to consult the index D its front edge may be grasped between the fingers and be withdrawn from between the leaf C and the book-cover B, as in Fig. 1, until it is drawn clear of the book-cover, and its leaf or its cover F,from occupying a position folded on the con nection 01, extends therefrom, as shown in Fig. 3, when the index may be readily referred to.

\Vhen it is desired to return the index D to its normal position between the covers of the book A, the improved structure enables the user, in whatever position the major portion of the leaves of the book may be, to simply push on the edge of the index D, and its leaf or cover F will commence to close down upon it, as in Fig. 4, and, bending on the connection d, will slide wholly between the leaf 0 and the book-cover B, as in Fig. 2.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that 2 4 seams if the index D be bound within covers, and the connection d be made between said leaf 0 of the book and one edge of the index-cover, as F, in withdrawing the index from between the leaf 0 and the book-cover B for reference or use the index-cover will be opened simultaneously with the withdrawal of the index, presenting the notched edge or referencetags E of the index-leaves for immediate use without the necessity of opening the index after it has been withdrawn.

It may be remarked in passing that the leaves 0 and F might be formed by a single leaf doubled or folded on the line d to form the required connection, one edge being firmly attached to the rear of the book-cover and the other edge united to the index-back, as is obvious; and it may also be remarked that while the supplemental book D has been termed an index, it obviously maybe any other class of reference-book or guide which it may be desired to refer to in connection with the book proper. So, too, the index or supplemental book D may be so connected with the book proper that it may be referred to without neoessarily withdrawing it therefrom.

What I claim is- In a combined book and index, the combi nation, with a book provided with a leaf, 0, free of the book-cover, to its rear edge, of an index provided with a leaf or cover, F, the free edge of the latter being flexibly united to the free edge of the leaf 0, whereby the index is independent of the book-cover and may be inserted and confined between the book-cover and the leaf 0, with the front edges of its
