Abstract

An annular yoke retainer ring for integrally mounting a deflection yoke upon a cathode ray tube comprises a circumferential wall surrounding a yoke with the wall being provided with a plurality of hollow pockets having an interior wall formed with a groove for receiving positioning members extending from the yoke. The pockets are completely enclosed on four sides and one end so that an adhesive dispensed thereinto cannot contaminate the yoke positioned interiorly thereof. The hollow pockets receive extending members positioned on the rear wall of the cathode ray tube and are bonded thereto by means of the adhesive dispensed therein.

The pockets are completely enclosed on four sides and one end so that an adhesive dispensed thereinto cannot contaminate the yoke positioned interiorly thereof. The hollow pockets receive extending members positioned on the rear wall of the cathode ray tube and are bonded thereto by means of the adhesive dispensed therein.
6 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates generally to mounting means for cathode ray tube deflection yokes and more particularly to such mounting means which are integral with the tube. Deflection yokes for cathode ray tubes in the past have been mounted upon supporting members generally positioned within a television receiver. The cathode ray tube was then positioned within the yoke. Recent developments have proposed that the deflection yoke be mounted as an integral component upon the tube when the tube is manufactured or shortly thereafter. It is with the latter embodiment that this invention is primarily concerned. When a deflection yoke is to be mounted as an integral part of the cathode ray tube, the components generally include a tube ring or similar part which is bonded to the rear wall of the cathode ray tube in a position surrounding the extending cylindrical neck of the tube. The tube ring is provided with a plurality of extending means such as cylindrical posts for engaging and mounting a tube retainer ring which carries the deflection yoke. The tube ring comprises an annular circumferential wall having projecting therefrom a plurality of pockets for receiving the extending studs of the tube ring. In the past these pockets have been formed with three walls, the interior being open to the deflection yoke carried therein. When mounted in a suitable position so that it was encompassing the extending studs from the tube ring an adhesive material was dispensed into the hollow pockets through a provided aperture in a closed end thereof. The adhesive would surround the stud projecting therein and would also flow interiorly and cover portions of the yoke contained therein. While this system provided an excellent bond it made it extremely difficult to remove the yoke should this be desired. It would be an advance in the art if means could be provided that obviated the above-cited difficulties.
OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is, therefore, an object of this invention to obviate the disadvantages of the prior art.
It is another object of the invention to enhance the mounting of integrally mounted deflection yokes.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a yoke mounting means which can more easily be removed.
These objects are accomplished in one aspect of the invention by the provision of an annular yoke retainer ring having a circumferential wall with a plurality of adhesive receiving pockets formed about the periphery of the wall. Each of the pockets has a substantially closed end extending normal to said wall, the end being provided with an adhesive receiving aperture. An open end is disposed opposite from the closed end. A surrounding circumferential side wall completely encloses each of the pockets with the exception of the open end and the side wall is attached to and extends from the substantially closed end section. With the pockets enclosed on all four sides material of an adhesive nature dispensed thereinto does not contaminate a yoke carried within the interior section of the yoke retainer ring.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a yoke retainer ring of the invention and the front crown of a deflection yoke, the yoke itself being omitted for purposes of clarity;
FIG. 2 is an elevational view taken along the line 22 of FIG. 1 and showing the wall arrangement of one of the pockets of the yoke retainer ring; and
FIG. 3 is an elevational view taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS For a better understanding of the present invention together with other and further objects, advantages and capabilities thereof, reference is made to the following disclosure and appended claims taken in conjunction with the above-described drawings.
Referring now to the drawings with greater particularity, there is shown in FIG. 1 an annular yoke retainer ring 10 which comprises a circumferential wall 12 having a plurality of adhesive receiving pockets 14 formed about the periphery thereof. The yoke retainer ring 10 is formed from a suitable material, such as plastic. Each of the pockets 14 has one substantially closed end 16 provided with an adhesive receiving aperture 18. The closed end 16 extends in a direction normal to wall 12. An open end 20 is provided in the pockets and is oppositely disposed with respect to closed end 16. Open end 20 is more clearly seen in FIG. 2. A surrounding side wall 22 completes the enclosure of pockets 14. The surrounding side wall 22 is attached to substantially closed end 16 and projects therefrom. The pockets 14 are provided with member receiving means 24. In this instance the member receiving means are indicated as being elongated grooves or slots 26. The grooves 26 have an entrance 28 formed in the substantially closed end 16 and are interiorly defined by an interior section 30 of pocket side wall 22. The interior section 30 can be more clearly seen in FIG. 2. In this particular instance the grooves 26 are shown as being substantially rectangular in cross-section, however, other configurations could be employed.
The member receiving means 24 which in this instance are grooves 26, accommodate and position a member interiorly of yoke retainer ring 10. As is shown diagrammatically in FIG. 1, this member can be the front crown 32 of a deflection yoke which is not shown. The front crown 32 of a deflection yoke generally comprises an annular ring having the front portion 34 thereof provided with a plurality of wire receiving grooves 36 extending about the circumferential area thereof. Additionally, the crown 32 is provided with a plurality of tabs 38 which extend from the crown wall. These tabs are similar in number to the number of adhesive receiving pockets l4 and in this particular instance four are shown. The tabs 38 are received by the member receiving means 24 and serve to position the yoke crown 32 therein.
In its operative embodiment the yoke retainer ring 10 is mounted over the cylindrical neck of a cathode ray tube and attached to a tube ring which is affixed to the rear wall of the cathode ray tube. The tube ring has projecting studs or posts extending therefrom which are received within the hollow pockets 14. The tube ring is not shown in this application but details thereof can be found in the Assignees application Ser. No. 4I 1,303, filed October 31, 1973. The latter application is incorporated herein by reference for its disclosure of a tube ring. When a yoke retainer ring is mounted in position upon the projecting studs of a tube ring and properly aligned, a hardenable adhesive is-dispensed into hollow pockets 14 through adhesive receiving apertures 18. The adhesive, when hard, will bond to the studs of the tube ring inserted thereinto and serve to mount the yoke retainer ring. The provision of the interior wall 30 which forms groove 26 prohibits the hardening adhesive from contaminating and flowing on to the yoke crown 32 which is positioned therein and prevents also contamination by the adhesive flowing on to the yoke itself. This mounting method with the new yoke retainer ring provides'for much easier removal of a deflection yoke should this become necessary.
The hollow pockets 14 can be seen also in FIG. 3 with the wall 12 shown in cross-section. Herein it will be seen that the substantially closed end portion 16 and the surrounding side wall 22 are of substantially similar cross-section. However, the interior section of wall 22 and particularly that portion 30 which defines the groove 26 can be formed from a thinner material. This allows a cost saving in producing the article as substantial strength is not needed in this particular area.
As an additional advantage, it should be noted that an annular yoke retainer ring 10 constructed in accordance with the above description allows a deflection yoke to be positioned therein by insertion either from the closed end 16 direction or from the open end direction. This was not the case with previous types of yoke retainer rings, which could only be inserted from the direction of open end 20.
While there have been shown what are at present considered to be the preferred embodiments of the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made herein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An annular yoke retainer ring comprising: a circumferential wall; a plurality of adhesive receiving pockets formed about the periphery of said wall, each of said pockets having one substantially closed end extending normal to said wall provided with an adhesive receiving aperture, an open end oppositely disposed therefrom, and a surrounding side wall completely enclosing each of said pockets and attached to said substantially closed end whereby adhesive dispensed thereinto cannot contaminate a member positioned interiorly of said circumferential wall.
2. The ring of claim 1 wherein said pockets are provided with means for receiving and positioning a member interiorly of said ring.
3. The ring of claim 2 wherein said pockets are substantially rectangular.
4. The ring of claim 3 wherein said last named means comprises a member receiving groove.
5. The ring of claim 4 wherein said receiving groove has an entrance formed in said substantially closed end and said groove is defined by an interior section of said pocket side wall.
6. The ring of claim 5 wherein said interior section of said pocket side wall is thinner in cross-section than the remaining sections of said side walls.

Claims (6)

1. An annular yoke retainer ring comprising: a circumferential wall; a plurality of adhesive receiving pockets formed about the periphery of said wall, each of said pockets having one substantially closed end extending normal to said wall provided with an adhesive receiving aperture, an open end oppositely disposed therefrom, and a surrounding side wall completely enclosing each of said pockets and attached to said substantially closed end whereby adhesive dispensed thereinto cannot contaminate a member positioned interiorly of said circumferential wall.
2. The ring of claim 1 wherein said pockets are provided with means for receiving and positioning a member interiorly of said ring.
3. The ring of claim 2 wherein said pockets are substantially rectangular.
4. The ring of claim 3 wherein said last named means comprises a member receiving groove.
5. The ring of claim 4 wherein said receiving groove has an entrance formed in said substantially closed end and said groove is defined by an interior section of said pocket side wall.
6. The ring of claim 5 wherein said interior section of said pocket side wall is thinner in cross-section than the remaining sections of said side walls.
