Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W; B. TREADWELL, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,188, dated April 14, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, W. B. TREADWELL, of the city of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Seuttles; and I hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description of the same, reference being had I accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 in the drawings which make a part of this specification represents a perspective view of my scuttle, with the shield attached to it. Fig. 2 represents the sheet-iron straps riveted to the inner edges of the shield. Fig.
' 3 represents the ear of the scuttle, with the pivot I passing through it, on which the scuttle is hinged.
The letterAdesignates the body of the scuttie, the upper edges of which are curved down at the end next the mouth to make an opening sufficiently large to admit of a free vent for the coal when the shield is in position.
The metal straps indicated by dotted lines are marked with the letter a. To the end of a, and at right angles with it, near the mouth of the scuttle, is riveted a piece of sheet metal an inch or more in width and several inches in length, and curved at the lower end, and maikad d.
0 represents a piece of large wire firmly secured to the inner sides of the scuttle, near the edges, and running in a line with a.
B represents the shield, which is convexoconcave in form.
9 represents one of the ears to which the bail is fastened, and secured to the scuttle, by
rivets.
In operating my scuttle the pressure of the coal upward against the shield will raise it until the curve or hook 11 catches on the side of e and is thus arrested, this arrangement preventing too free a discharge of coal through the spout.
The design of the straps a is to prevent the coal from falling over the sides at the moment it is discharged from the spout of the scuttle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The convexoconcave shield B, in combination with the straps on and the rods 6, operating in the manner herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
W. B. TREADWELL. Witnesses THOS. HOUGHTON, F. VAN EMBURGH.
