Abstract

Apparatus for removing noxious gases from a work area comprises a suction fan, a flexible tubing connected to the suction part of the fan, a suction casing mounted at the tube end and, provided within the tube, a lever system which consists of two lever arms of which one arm at one end is connected to the suction part of the fan and at the other end is connected to one end of the other arm, which is further connected to the suction casing.

1,390,950 9/1921 7 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures Avery 98/115 R ADJUSTABLE ASSEMBLY FOR EXHAUSTING OUT FUMES The present invention relates to an adjustable assembly for exhausting fumes from working places where unhealthy gases are formed, said assembly, among other things, comprising a suction fan, a suction casing and a flexible tubing extending between the suction casing and the fan. A suitable application for the assembly may for example include the exhausting of fumes by welding and the like operations.
Previously known suction devices have shown several drawbacks; the primary drawback being the difficulty to easily adjust and according to the progress of the work move the actual suction casing or suction nozzle so that an effective exhausting of all the fumes has been made possible.
The suction assembly according to the present invention has for its object to eliminate the above mentioned and also other drawbacks and in the following an examplifying embodiment will be described with reference ,to the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 shows a side view of the suction assembly, partly in section, FIG. 2 also shows a side view of the assembly arranged in three different positions, FIG. 3 illustrates a view seen from above of the three different positions according to FIG. 2, and FIG. 4 on a more enlarged scale illustrates the different links of the assembly in detail.
With reference being made to FIG. 1 a suction fan is indicated by l,numeral 2 designates a suction casing and a flexible tubing 3 extends between the fan and the suction cover. Hereby, the fan comprises a motor 4 driving the fan wheel (not shown) and a fan cap 5, a central pipe 6 extending from the cap and an elbow 7 being pivotably mounted on the pipe. One or more plates 8 are fixed to the free end of the elbow 7, said plates forming the bearings for a first linkable arm 9 as well as for one or more springs 10, being shown only schematically by dotted lines in FIG. 1. To the end of the first linkable arm 9 remote from the fan an essentially triangularly shaped plate 11 is fixed, said plate forming the attachment for a second linkable arm 12 and for one or several more tension springs 13. The other end of the spring 13 is fixed to a flange 14 extending from the arm 12, said flange being positioned close to the outermost end of the arm 12. The suction casing 2 is at 15 pivotallyfixed to said outermost end of the arm 12, which cover is suitably provided with a handle 16 and a fly 17 indicated by the dotted lines. The suction casing 2 is pivotable relative to the arm 12 in the direction shown by the arrow 18.The flexible tubing 3, preferably made from a glassfibre-reinforced thermostable plastic material is thread outside the elbow 7 at one end thereof and outside the suction casing 2 at the other end thereof.
In FIG. 2 and 3 the assembly is shown in three different positions, where position A is the positionin which the suction casing 2 has the smallest distance to the wall 19 or similar structure on which the assembly is hung. The positions B and C are showing the maximal distance from the suction casing to the wall 19 and a position, respectively, in which the suction casing takes a position, that lies on a distance between the two positions A and B but on a higher level than in these two positions. The pivotal mounting of the assembly in the horizontal plane is preferably illustrated in FIG. 3.
FIG. 4 in detail shows the litiks and the securing means for the tension springs and includes the same reference numerals as used in FIG. 1 for the common details of the two figures. The arm 9 extends from the plates 8, said arm being fixed to theplates by a screwed bolt and nut, the centre line of which is marked by the dotted line 20. Friction washers 21 are positioned between the arm 9 and the plates 8, said washers preferably being made from bakelite reinforced with fabric. The plates 11 are welded to the other end of the arm 9, as indicated by 22. The arm 12 extends from the plates 11, said arm being fixed to these in a manner similar to that in which the arm 9 is fixed to the plates 8. In this case the friction link 23 comprises washers 24, one side thereof engaging the arm 12 and the other side thereof engaging the friction washers 25, which in turn at the other side thereof directly engages the plates 11. To ensure the friction force flat washers 26 and spring washers 27 are positioned between the plate 11 and the bolt or nut 28 and 29, respectively. Shafts 30, 31, respectively, extend through the plates 8 and 11 and the ends of the tension springs are fixed to said shafts. Thereby the shaft 30 supports one end of the springs 10 and the shaft supports the other end of the springs 10 as well as one end of the springs 13, whereby in this case the springs 13 are fixed outside thesprings 10. The other end of the springs 13 is fixedl to a shaft extending through the flange 14 positioned on the arm 12.
As is understood, the invention may be varied in several ways within the scope of the following claims, without departing fromthe spirit of the invention.

l. A freely adjustable assembly for exhausting fumes from a workplace where unhealthy gases are formed, comprising a suction fan, a flexible tubing having one end connected to the suction inlet of the suction fan and the other end connected to a suction casing, and lever means inside the flexible tubing operable to allow the suction casing to be freely and repeatedly moved to a plurality of desired positions in relation to the workplace, said lever means comprising first and second lever arms, said first lever arm being pivotably connected at oneend to the suction inlet of the suction fan and at the other end pivotably connectedto one end of the second lever arm, the other end of the second lever arm being pivotably connected to the suction casing.
2. Assembly according to claim 1, wherein the flexible tubing is made of a thermostable glass fiberreinforced plastics material.
3. Assembly according to claim 1, wherein an elbow is mounted on said suction part for movement in a horizontal plane, said first arm being connected to said elbow for pivotable movement in a vertical plane, and said second arm is connected to said first arm for pivotable movement in the same vertical plane as the first arm.
4. Assembly according to claim 3, wherein the connections between said elbow and said first arm, and between said first and second arms, are provided by first and second frictional links, the frictional links having sufficient friction as to be operable to maintain the suction casing in the position in which it is set.
5. Assembly according to claim 4, wherein the suc tion casing is connected to the second arm by a frictionl link.

Claims (7)

1. A freely adjustable assembly for exhausting fumes from a workplace where unhealthy gases are formed, comprising a suction fan, a flexible tubing having one end connected to the suction inlet of the suction fan and the other end connected to a suction casing, and lever means inside the flexible tubing operable to allow the suction casing to be freely and repeatedly moved to a plurality of desired positions in relation to the workplace, said lever means comprising first and second lever arms, said first lever arm being pivotably connected at one end to the suction inlet of the suction fan and at the other end pivotably connected to one end of the second lever arm, the other end of the second lever arm being pivotably connected to the suction casing.
2. Assembly according to claim 1, wherein the flexible tubing is made of a thermostable glass fiber-reinforced plastics material.

Assembly according to claim 1, wherein an elbow is mounted on said suction part for movement in a horizontal plane, said first arm being connected to said elbow for pivotable movement in a vertical plane, and said second arm is connected to said first arm for pivotable movement in the same vertical plane as the first arm.
4. Assembly according to claim 3, wherein the connections between said elbow and said first arm, and between said first and second arms, are provided by first and second frictional links, the frictional links having sufficient friction as to be operable to maintain the suction casing in the position in which it is set.
5. Assembly according to claim 4, wherein the suction casing is connected to the second arm by a frictionl link.
6. Assembly according to claim 4, wherein at least two tension springs are provided to unload the frictional links, one spring being attached between a point on the elbow close to the first link and a point close to the second link, and anOther spring being attached between a point close to the second link and a point on the second arm close to said other end.
7. Assembly according to claim 6, wherein the suction casing is provided with a fly.
