Abstract

A device for mounting a grinding wheel on the shaft of a motor so that the grinding wheel may be rotated either in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction without danger of it becoming loose. The device includes a cylindrical member mounting the grinding wheel on the tapered shaft of a motor, said member being held on the shaft by a nut, the threads of which are subjected to compressive force exerted thereon by a plug carried by an annular member that is threaded to the cylindrical member, said annular member and said cylindrical member clamping the grinding wheel therebetween. The plug which is threaded into the annular member engages the nut and when it is tightened it applies pressure or tension to all of the threads of the device so that the grinding wheel may be rotated in either direction without coming loose on its mount.

The device includes a cylindrical member mounting the grinding wheel on the tapered shaft of a motor, said member being held on the shaft by a nut, the threads of which are subjected to compressive force exerted thereon by a plug carried by an annular member that is threaded to the cylindrical member, said annular member and said cylindrical member clamping the grinding wheel therebetween. The plug which is threaded into the annular member engages the nut and when it is tightened it applies pressure or tension to all of the threads of the device so that the grinding wheel may be rotated in either direction without coming loose on its mount.

GRINDING WHEEL ADAPTER DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a grinding wheel mounting device that is constructed so that the grinding wheel may be rotated either in clockwise or counterclockwise direction without danger of coming loose on its mountmg.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved grinding wheel mounting device for attaching the grinding wheel to the shaft of a motor by means of a pair of members that are threaded together and one of which is provided with a plug that engages the nut on the motor shaft and applies pressure or tension to the threads thereof and to the threads between said members so that said nut and said members can not come loose and loosen said grinding wheel even though the grinding wheel is rotated either in the clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
Further objects of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates from the following specification, claims and drawing.
In accordance with this invention there is provided an improved grinding wheel adapter that may be economically and efficiently manufactured and installed and which will positively hold the grinding wheel on the shaft of the driving motor. This device is provided with a pair of members that are threaded together and provide means for clamping the grinding wheel therebetween. One of these members has a tapered or straight hole for receiving the tapered or straight shaft of the driving motor. This tapered or straight shaft is provided with a threaded nut for retaining said member on the tapered or straight shaft. The other member is provided with a threaded hole for receiving a plug that engages the outer end of the nut and applies pressure thereto whereby pressure is applied to the threads of said nut and tension is applied to the threads between said members thereby preventing said members from loosening with respect to each other and also preventing said grinding wheel from becoming loose on its mountmg.
Further details and features of this invention will be set forth in the following specification, claims and drawing, in which briefly:
FIG. 1 is a sectional view of an embodiment of this grinding wheel adapter used on a tapered spindle;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of F 1G. 1; and
FIG. 1a is a fragmentary sectional view showing of this grinding wheel adapter used on a straight spindle.
Referring to the drawing in detail, reference numeral 10 designates an electric motor of conventional design which may have either a tapered output shaft 11 as shown in FIG. 1 or a straight shaft 1 la as shown in FIG. 1a which is driven when suitable electric current is supplied to the windings of the motor. A suitable grinding wheel 12 which may be of any conventional type such as a carborundum wheel or one provided with industrial diamonds attached to the grinding surface thereof by cintering, welding, or the like, is supported on the tapered shaft 11 or on the straight shaft lla by the member 13 which is provided with a tapered or straight hole for receiving the shaft. The end portion 14 of the shaft 11 is threaded to receive the threaded nut 15,
which is positioned in the cavity 11a of the member 11, and the inner face of which engages the shoulder 13a of the member 13. I
The inner surface 12a of the grinding wheel 12 is positioned against the member 13 and a washer 16 is pressed against the corresponding outer surface by the member 17 which is threaded to the neck portion 13b of member 13 that surrounds the cavity 11b. Suitable slots 18 are provided to the member 13 to receive keys provided to the washer 16. These keys extend into the slots 18 and prevent the washer turning with respect to the grinding wheel and member 13 when the annular member 17 is threaded to the neck 13b during the clamping of the grinding wheel and washer into position on the cylindrical member 13. Member 13 is provided with recesses 136 for receiving a spanner wrench and recesses 17a are provided to member 17 for receiving pins of another wrench so that these members may be held by such wrenches when the member 17 is tightened on the neck 13b of member 13 when the grinding wheel is being installed on its supporting member 13.
The grinding wheel clamping member 17 is provided with a threaded hole for receiving the externally threaded nut 19 therein. The nut 19 is provided with a hexagonal recess 19a for receiving a wrench so that this nut may be turned and inserted into the threaded hole of member 17. The internal end of this nut may be brought into clamping engagement with the outer end of the nut 15.
When the nut 19 is tightened in the hole provided in member 17 the inner end of this nut bears against the outer end of the nut 15 so that tension is applied to the various threads of members 13, 15, 17, and 19 and these members are prevented from loosening when the shaft 11 of the motor rotates the grinding wheel 12 either clockwise or counterclockwise. Thus, the grinding wheel 12 may be rotated in either direction without fear of having it come loose on the support member 13 during various grinding operations. The threads of member 17 engaging the threads of neck portion 13b may be either right hand or left hand and likewise, the threads of member 17 engaging the threads of plug 19 may be either right hand or left hand. However, threads of member 17 engaging the threads of neck 13b and those of member 17 engaging the threads of plug 19 should both be of the same hand, that is, left hand so that when the plug 19 is tightened the member 17 is not loosened on neck 13b. Thus, the grip of member 17 on washer l6 and grinding wheel 12 remains tight when plug 19 is tightened.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of the invention it will be apparent that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the form shown, so that its scope should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended thereto.
What I claim is:
1. A grinding wheel adapter comprising a hollow cylindrical member having a bearing surface for mounting said member on a spindle having a corresponding bearing surface, said cylindrical member having a recess for receiving a grinding wheel, said cylindrical member also having a threaded neck portion extending from said recess, an annular member having internal threads engaging said threaded neck, said annular member holding said grinding wheel on said cylindrical member, a nut having threads engaging threads on the further characterized in that the threads on said plug and said annular member are of the same hand as the threads on said cylindrical member and said annular member.
3. A grinding wheel adapter as set forth in claim 1, further characterized in that said cylindrical member is provided with a recess for receiving said nut and said plug engages the outer end of said nut.

Claims (3)

1. A grinding wheel adapter comprising a hollow cylindrical member having a bearing surface for mounting said member on a spindle having a corresponding bearing surface, said cylindrical member having a recess for receiving a grinding wheel, said cylindrical member also having a threaded neck portion extending from said recess, an annular member having internal threads engaging said threaded neck, said annular member holding said grinding wheel on said cylindrical member, a nut having threads engaging threads on the end portion of said spindle, the inner end of said nut eNgaging said cylindrical member to hold said cylindrical member on said spindle, and a plug threaded into said annular member engaging said nut to apply tension to the threads of said spindle and said nut and to the threads of said neck and said annular member to prevent loosening of said grinding wheel in said recess regardless of direction of rotation thereof.
2. A grinding wheel adapter as set forth in claim 1, further characterized in that the threads on said plug and said annular member are of the same hand as the threads on said cylindrical member and said annular member.
3. A grinding wheel adapter as set forth in claim 1, further characterized in that said cylindrical member is provided with a recess for receiving said nut and said plug engages the outer end of said nut.
