Abstract

An applicator for paint, glue or the like includes a barrel with a squeeze bulb on one end and a handle depending therefrom. A disposable flexible tube has an applicator head on one end and is insertable into the barrel and is held in sealing relationship therein so that by pressing the bulb, the walls of the tube collapse and when released allow liquid to be drawn into the tube if the applicator is submerged into a can of liquid. A shut-off device collapses the applicator or adaptor to prevent liquid from flowing from the tube to the applicator head unless the bulb is again squeezed which forces the desired amount of liquid pass the shut-off and onto the applicator which may be foam or bristle.

APPLICATOR FOR LIQUIDS BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to new and useful improvements in applicators for liquids and although the description refers specifically to paint, nevertheless it is to be appreciated that the use of such terms are not to be considered restrictive as the applicator can be used for dispensing or application of any liquid such as glue or the like.
Conventionally, foam or bristle applicators are used which are individually dipped into a container of the liquid and then applied to the surface upon which it is desired to place the liquid. In the case of paint, very little can be carried by the bristles or foam so that continual dipping of the bristles or foam is required. The only other alternative known apart from mechanical spraying, is the use of a roller and tray which suffers from many disadvantages particularly when paints are of a relatively heavy body.
Furthermore, conventional applicators whether they be foam, bristles or roller, require extensive cleaning after use, particularly if they are to be used with paints of different colors.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention overcomes all of these disadvantages by providing a liquid applicator which includes a rigid barrel having a squeeze bulb on one end thereof. A disposable flexible tube is insertable within the barrel and can be sealed into position and an applicator head is secured to the end of the tube. This means that when the bulb is squeezed, air pressure within the barrel compresses the tube and if the applicator is dipped within a can of paint, release of the bulb will draw the paint through the applicator head and into the tube. A shut-off device is provided to apply pressure to the adaptor between the tube'and the applicator head so that by squeezing the bulb, paint is expressed from the tube, passed the restrictive shut-off and onto the applicator which may then apply the paint to the surface or article as required. Although the accompanying drawings show an applicator made of foam, nevertheless it will be appreciated that such an applicator could easily be brush bristles. The tube and applicator head are relatively simple in construction so that they can be disposed of when finished rather than having to clean same and store same for further use. However, when bristles are used, it may be desirable to re-use same, but such re-use is a matter of choice.
The principal object and essence of the invention is therefore to provide a device of the character herewithin described which enables a supply of liquid such as paint, glue or the like to be held within the device and dispensed through an applicator head during use as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is provided with a handle for convenient use and means to permit the handle to be moved out of the way when the tube is being filled from a paint container or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which includes quickly releaseable clamp means to hold the applicator head and tube in sealing relationship with the barrel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is simple in construction, economical in manufacture and otherwise well suited to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the foregoing objects in view, and other such objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION Proceeding therefore to describe the invention in detail, the device 10 includes an open-ended cylindrical barrel ll of rigid plastic having a flexible squeeze bulb 12 secured to one end 13 thereof.
An applicator and tube assembly collectively designated 14 is engageable within the other end 15 of the barrel and is held detachably in position by means of a clamp assembly collectively designated 15.
A handle 16 is secured to the barrel 11 and is capable of sliding movement therealong from a forward or applicating position shown in FIG. 1 in full line, to a rearward or filling position shown in phantom in FIG. 1.
The handle is preferably made of plastic and extends downwardly from the barrel when in the position shown in FIG. 6 and this handle includes a front shoe 17 and a rear sliding portion 18. The portion 18 is provided with out-turned flanges 19 which slidably engage within a channel 20 secured to the underside of the barrel.
A shoe engaging channel 21 is mounted adjacent the front end of the barrel and is engaged by the shoe 17 when the handle is in the forward position shown in full line in FIG. 1 and a latch assembly collectively designated 22 locks the handle either in the forward position or in the rearward position. This latch assembly consists of a vertically sliding latch bar 23 mounted for movement within clips 24 secured to the handle and having an engaging end 25 which engages in front of a front stop 26 when in the forward position and behind a rear stop 27 when in the rear position, said stops depending from the aforementioned channel secured to the underside of the barrel.
The tube and applicator assembly 14 are shown in detail in FIG. 2, and include a flexible cylindrical tube 28 made of plastic such as polyethylene or the like, said tube being closed at the inner end 29 thereof.
The other open end 30 is secured as by adhesive over an adaptor 31 which is also made of a fairly rigid plastic and this adaptor is provided with a washer 32 secured thereto which engages the other end of the barrel 11 when the tube is inserted within the barrel and is in the position shown in FIG. 1. A flexible sealing washer 33 is situated between the metal or plastic washer 32 and the other end of the barrel 11.
The adaptor continues and changes cross section to a substantially oval cross section clearly shown in FIG. 7, this portion of the adaptor being identified by reference character 31A and this portion of the adaptor is formed from a flexible plastic which is capable of deformation as will hereinafter be described.
Formed on the distal end of the portion 31A is an adaptor head collectively designated 34 which is formed of a foam material in this embodiment. However, it will be appreciated that this adaptor head could consist of conventional paint brush bristles or the like.
In this embodiment however, the head consists of an upper foam pad 35 having upper sloping surfaces 36 terminating in an apex 37 with the lower surface being arcuately curved as indicated by reference character 38. The lower portion 39 which is symmetric to the upper portion, is substantially rectangular when viewed in end elevation and is provided with a planar base 40 and an arcuately curved upper surface 41 which in conjunction with the lower surface 38 of the upper portion, forms an oval aperture clearly illustrated in FIG. 4 and this aperture communicates with the open end of the portion 31A of the adaptor which in turn, of course, communicates'with the tube 28 and the purpose of this oval aperture designated by reference character 42, will hereinafter be described.
Means are provided to detachably clamp the assembly 14 into position within the barrel 11 with the applicator head 34 extending from the other end of the barrel as clearly illustrated and in this regard, reference should be made to FIGS. 1 and 3.
An upper half ring 43 is provided with notches 44 adjacent the ends thereof and is held by a pair of arms 45 which extend rearwardly or towards the end 13 of the barrel. These arms are secured to a cross bar 46 which in turn is connected to a partially cylindrical partial sleeve 47 engaging around part of the barrel 11.
The lower half ring 48 is provided with projections 49 upon each end thereof (one only of which is shown) and this also is mounted upon a pair of rods or arms 45A in turn mounted upon a cross bar 46A spanning the opposite side of the barrel and also being mounted upon a partially cylindrical partial sleeve 47A also mounted for endwise movement upon the barrel in opposition to sleeve 47.
A cam ring 48 surrounds the partial sleeves and mounts them for said endwise movement upon the barrel.
The area of the barrel between the sides of the partial sleeves 47 and 47A is taken up by partially cylindrical portions 49 which extend rearwardly from a fixed sleeve 50 secured around the other end of barrel 11 so that these partial sleeves 49 which are not movable, together with the partial sleeves 47 and 47A which are movable, form a complete cylinder around the other end of the barrel and act as a mounting for the cam ring 48 with the fixed sleeves 49 acting as a mounting for the shoe engaging portion 21 of the handle 16.
Cam ring 48 is provided with an inclined ramp 51 on the rear side thereof and is rotatable upon the sleeves 47, 47A and 49. Stops 52 are secured to the fixed sleeve portions 49 so that these act as reaction stops and prevent the cam ring from moving forwardly towards the other end of the barrel ll.
Cam surfaces or projections 53 are secured to the partial sleeves 47 and 47A and are engageable by the ramps 51 so that as the sleeve 48 is rotated, the projections or surfaces 53 are moved together with the partial sleeves 47 and 47A towards the one end 13 of the barrel and these sleeves, of course, pull the rings 43 and 48 in the same direction.
With the tube and applicator head assembly 14 inserted into the barrel with the washer 32 engaging the resilient sealing washer 33, the half rings are moved manually towards one another so that they engage around the washer 32 and upon the side 32A (see FIG. 2). When in the closed position, the projections 49' of the half ring 48' interlock with the notches 44 of the half ring 43 so that manipulation of the cam ring draws the half rings tightly against the washer 32 thus compressing same against washer 33 and maintaining the assembly 14 in sealing relationship within the barrel 11. This seal is, of course, essential as will hereinafter become apparent.
Means are provided to restrictively shut off the aforementioned oval portion 3IA of the adaptor 31, said means taking the form of an over center lever 54 pivoted by the lower end thereof to a lug 55 attached to the barrel adjacent the end 13 thereof. A link 56 is pivotally secured by one end thereof to intermediate the ends of lever 54 as indicated by reference character 57 and this link extends forwardly to be pivotally secured by the other end 58 thereof, to an arm 59 which in turn is pivotally secured to a lug 60 mounted to fixed sleeve 50 adjacent the other end of barrel 11.
A downwardly inclined compression portion 61 extends from end 58 of the link 56 and is provided with an enlarged distal end 62 which is situated just above the portion 31A of the adaptor and it will be observed that the width of this enlarged portion is considerably less than the width of the oval cross section of the adaptor portion 31A.
When in the position shown in FIG. 1, the shut-off means is inoperative, but if the lever 54 is moved fowrardly in the direction of arrow 63, the distal end 62 of the portion 61 moves downwardly in an arc and en gages the upper surface of the portion 31A of the adaptor and collapses same as shown in FIG. 5. This closes off the connection between the head 34 and the tube 28 and prevents liquid such as paint from flowing to the head by gravitational means.
However, if the bulb 12 is squeezed, air within the barrel exerts pressure around the flexible tube 28 and forces liquid within the cartridge past the restrictive shut-off caused by the pressure of end 62 upon the flexible portion 31A of the adaptor so that such liquid appears on the projecting portion 39A of the applicator head 34 as indicated by reference character 64 in FIG.
7. This means that full control of the amount of liquid such as paint is available to the operator.
When it is desired to fill the tube 28, the restrictive shut-off means is released, the bulb is fully compressed manually and the applicator head 34 is inserted within the container of the liquid so that it is submerged therein. The bulb is then released thus causing liquid within the container to be drawn up into the tube 28 whereupon the shut-off lever is moved to the closed position thus preventing the liquid from flowing back out by gravity. The device is now ready for use and the liquid such as paint is expelled by pressure of the bulb as required.
When the particular use hasbeen completed, the entire tube and applicator assembly 14 may be disposed of and a new one utilized for further painting which is particularly useful when different colors are being used.
Under certain circumstances it may be desirable to add stiffener or spine to the tube 28 in order to ensure that it remains in an elongated position and reference character 65 illustrates a V-shaped strip of fairly rigid plastic which is cemented to the inside of the adaptor 31 and extends along the inside of the tube 28.
Finally, it may be necessary to provide an internal stiffener 66 to the lower foam portion or block 39 which may consist of a strip of plastic embedded within the foam in order to provide a portion of the applicator head with sufficient stiffness to spread paint or glue, particularly if the consistency is rather stiff.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. Anapplicator for liquid such as paint, glue and the like, comprising in combination a substantially rigid barrel, squeeze bulb means on one end of said barrel, a cartridge and applicator assembly, said assembly including a flexible cartridge insertable in the other end of said barrel and an applicator head secured to one end of said cartridge and communicating with the interior thereof, means co-operating between said barrel and said assembly to sealably clamp said assembly into position upon said other end of said barrel with said applicator head extending from said barrel, partially restrictive shut-off means on said applicator selectively closing off said applicator head from communication with said cartridge, handle means extending from said barrel, means to move said handle along said barrel from an applicating position to a cartridge filling position, and means to detachably lock said handle in either of said positions.
2. The applicator according to claim 1 in which said cartridge and applicator assembly includes a flexible adaptor between said one end of said cartridge and said applicator head, said adaptor having a substantially oval cross section, said applicator head being secured to one end of said adaptor, and having an opening therein for communication with said adaptor, said restrictive shut-off means engaging said adaptor when in the closed position.
3. The applicator according to claim 2 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an are when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
4. The applicator according to claim 1 in which said means to sealably clamp said assembly into said barrel includes a shoulder on said cartridge adjacent the end connected to said head, engageable with the other end of said barrel, sealing means between said shoulder and said other end, and a clamp assembly on said barrel.
5. The applicator according to claim 4 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes and over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn from said adaptor.
6. The applicator according to claim 1 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
7. An applicator for liquid such as paint, glue and the like, comprising in combination a substantially rigid barrel, squeeze bulb means on one end of said barrel, a cartridge and applicator assembly, said assembly including a flexible cartridge insertable in the other end of said barrel and an applicator head secured to one end of said cartridge and communicating with the interior thereof, means co-operating between said barrel and said assembly to sealably clamp said assembly into position upon said other end of said barrel with said applicator head extending from said barrel, partially restrictive shut-off means on said applicator selectively closing off said applicator head from communication with said cartridge, said cartridge and applicator assembly including a flexible adaptor between said one end of said cartridge and said applicator head, said adaptor having a substantially oval cross section, said applicator head being secured to one end of said adaptor, and having an opening therein for communication with said adaptor, said restrictive shut-off means engaging said adaptor when in the closed position.
8. The applicator according to claim 7 in which said means to sealably clamp said assembly into said barrel includes a shoulder on said cartridge adjacent the end connected to said head, engageable with the other end of said barrel, sealing means between said shoulder and said other end, and a clamp assembly on said barrel.
9. The applicator according to claim 8 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes and over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and a adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an are when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
10. The applicator according to claim 8 in which said clamp assembly includes a pair of half-circle interlocking rings engaging around said shoulder, and a pair of partial sleeves surrounding said barrel and being mounted for endwise movement thereon, said rings being pivotally mounted one on each one of said partial sleeves, a cam ring surroundingsaid sleeves and means on said sleeves engaging by said cam ring to move said sleeves endwise as aforesaid when said ring is partially rotated.
11. The applicator according to claim 10 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link movingin said horn in an are when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
12. The applicator according to claim 7 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an are when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
13. An applicator for liquid such as paint, glue and the like, comprising in combination a substantially rigid barrel, squeeze bulb means on one end of said barrel, a cartridge and applicator assembly, said assembly including a flexible cartridge insertable in the other end of said barrel and an applicator head secured to one end of said cartridge and communicating with the interior thereof, means co-operating between said barrel and said assembly to sealably clamp said assembly into position upon said other end of said barrel with said applicator head extending from said barrel, partially restrictive shut-off means on said applicator selectively closing off said applicator head from communication with said cartridge, said means to sealably clamp said assembly into said barrel including a shoulder on said cartridge adjacent the end connected to said head, engageable with the other end of said barrel, sealing means between said shoulder and said other end, and a clamp assembly on said barrel.
14. The applicator according to claim 13 in which said clamp assembly includes a pair of half-circle interlocking rings engaging around said shoulder, and a pair of partial sleeves surrounding said barrel and being mounted for endwise movement thereon, said rings being pivotally mounted one on each one of said partial sleeves, a cam ring surrounding said sleeves and means on said sleeves engaging by said cam ring to move said sleeves endwise as aforesaid when said ring is partially rotated.
15. The applicator according to claim 14 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an are when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn form said adaptor.
16. The applicator according to claim 13 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an are when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.

Claims (16)

1. An applicator for liquid such as paint, glue and the like, comprising in combination a substantially rigid barrel, squeeze bulb means on one end of said barrel, a cartridge and applicator assembly, said assembly including a flexible cartridge insertable in the other end of said barrel and an applicator head secured to one end of said cartridge and communicating with the interior thereof, means co-operating between said barrel and said assembly to sealably clamp said assembly into position upon said other end of said barrel with said applicator head extending from said barrel, partially restrictive shut-off means on said applicator selectively closing off said applicator head from communication with said cartridge, handle means extending from said barrel, means to move said handle along said barrel from an applicating position to a cartridge filling position, and means to detachably lock said handle in either of said positions.
2. The applicator according to claim 1 in which said cartridge and applicator assembly includes a flexible adaptor between said one end of said cartridge and said applicator head, said adaptor having a substantially oval cross section, said applicator head being secured to one end of said adaptor, and having an opening therein for communication with said adaptor, said restrictive shut-off means engaging said adaptor when in the closed position.
3. The applicator according to claim 2 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
4. The applicator according to claim 1 in which said means to sealably clamp said assembly into said barrel includes a shoulder on said cartridge adjacent the end connected to said head, engageable with the other end of said barrel, sealing means between said shoulder and said other end, and a clamp assembly on said barrel.
5. The applicator according to claim 4 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes and over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn from said adaptor.
6. The applicator according to claim 1 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
7. An applicator for liquid such as paint, glue and the like, comprisiNg in combination a substantially rigid barrel, squeeze bulb means on one end of said barrel, a cartridge and applicator assembly, said assembly including a flexible cartridge insertable in the other end of said barrel and an applicator head secured to one end of said cartridge and communicating with the interior thereof, means co-operating between said barrel and said assembly to sealably clamp said assembly into position upon said other end of said barrel with said applicator head extending from said barrel, partially restrictive shut-off means on said applicator selectively closing off said applicator head from communication with said cartridge, said cartridge and applicator assembly including a flexible adaptor between said one end of said cartridge and said applicator head, said adaptor having a substantially oval cross section, said applicator head being secured to one end of said adaptor, and having an opening therein for communication with said adaptor, said restrictive shut-off means engaging said adaptor when in the closed position.
8. The applicator according to claim 7 in which said means to sealably clamp said assembly into said barrel includes a shoulder on said cartridge adjacent the end connected to said head, engageable with the other end of said barrel, sealing means between said shoulder and said other end, and a clamp assembly on said barrel.
9. The applicator according to claim 8 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes and over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and a adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
10. The applicator according to claim 8 in which said clamp assembly includes a pair of half-circle interlocking rings engaging around said shoulder, and a pair of partial sleeves surrounding said barrel and being mounted for endwise movement thereon, said rings being pivotally mounted one on each one of said partial sleeves, a cam ring surrounding said sleeves and means on said sleeves engaging by said cam ring to move said sleeves endwise as aforesaid when said ring is partially rotated.
11. The applicator according to claim 10 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
12. The applicator according to claim 7 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
13. An applicator for liquid such as paint, glue and the like, comprising in combination a substantially rigid barrel, squeeze bulb means on one end of said barrel, A cartridge and applicator assembly, said assembly including a flexible cartridge insertable in the other end of said barrel and an applicator head secured to one end of said cartridge and communicating with the interior thereof, means co-operating between said barrel and said assembly to sealably clamp said assembly into position upon said other end of said barrel with said applicator head extending from said barrel, partially restrictive shut-off means on said applicator selectively closing off said applicator head from communication with said cartridge, said means to sealably clamp said assembly into said barrel including a shoulder on said cartridge adjacent the end connected to said head, engageable with the other end of said barrel, sealing means between said shoulder and said other end, and a clamp assembly on said barrel.
14. The applicator according to claim 13 in which said clamp assembly includes a pair of half-circle interlocking rings engaging around said shoulder, and a pair of partial sleeves surrounding said barrel and being mounted for endwise movement thereon, said rings being pivotally mounted one on each one of said partial sleeves, a cam ring surrounding said sleeves and means on said sleeves engaging by said cam ring to move said sleeves endwise as aforesaid when said ring is partially rotated.
15. The applicator according to claim 14 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn form said adaptor.
16. The applicator according to claim 13 in which said restrictive shut-off means includes an over center operating lever mounted upon said barrel, a link pivotally secured by one end thereof to said lever, means pivotally mounting the other end of said link on said barrel, and an adaptor engaging compression portion extending from said other end of said link, said lever and said link moving in said horn in an arc when moved in one direction, to press upon the surface of said adaptor to compress said adaptor thereby shutting off same, said lever and said link moving said horn in the opposite direction to remove the contact of said horn from said adaptor.
