SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,855, dated April 10, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Honllrro J. BREWER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Galvanic Battery, of which the following isa fnll,clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved galvanic battery, in which the porous cup itself forms a cover for thejar and at the same time permits the insertion of the zinc rod, in which battery the electrodes are held securely in place in thejar, and the zinc rod is prevented from coming in contact with the electro-negative sediment deposited in the bottom of the jar, and in which galvanic battery the internal resistance of the porous cup is greatly reduced by the use ofa cup which is extremely porous.
The invention consists of aprocess for forming porous cups, and in the construction and arrangement of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improvement with part of the porous cup in elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line 00 m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of part of the containingar.
The containing-jar A, of suitable material, is provided with mouth B, which continues at its lower end into the reduced round neck 0, formed on the upper end of the square body D, the lower end of which is provided with the reduced round bottom part, E, forming the shoulder E between said body part D andthe bottom part, E. In the bottom E rests the lower end of the porous cup F, provided on its upper end with an outwardlyextending annular flange, G, in which is formed a recess, H, for the passage of the electrode I, the lower end of which rests on the shoulder E, formed between the body D and the bottom part, E, of the jar A. Part of the electrode I passes through a recess, J, formed in the neck of the jar A, said recessJ registering with the recess H in the flange G of the porous cup F.
Between the inside of the neck 0 and the outside of the porous cup F is placed elastic material K, against part of which rests the electrode I, which is thus insulated from the porous cup F. In thelatter is placed the usual electro-negative material, L, and the conductingplate N, forming, in conjunction with the cup F and the material L, the negative electrode. 4
It will be seen that the electrode I is held firmly in place by passing through the recess H, formed in the flange G of the porous cup F, and the recess J, formed in thejar A, said re cesses H and J being located one above the other.
It will also be seen that the flange G of the porous cup F rests upon the shoulder of the mouth B of the jar A, so as to form a cover for said jar, and when the zinc rod I is inserted in the recess H then the jar is completely closed and the evaporation of the liquid contained in the jar A is prevented. The lower end of the zinc rod I rests upon the shoulder E, formed by the reduced lowerpart, E,of the jar A, thus preventing contact between the positive electrode and the electro-negative sedi ment precipitated in the bottom of the jar. An exceedingly compact and secure battery is thus formed, in which the danger of local action is reduced to a minimum and the internal resistance of the battery is very small.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a galvanic battery, the combination, with a porous cup provided with a flange having a recess, of a containing-jar provided in its neck with a recess, and a positive electrode passing through said recess in the flange of the porous cup and through said recess in the containing-jar, substantially as shown and de scribed.
2. In a galvanic battery, the combination, with a porous cup provided with a flange having a recess, of a containingjar having a reduced bottom part for receiving the lower end of said porous cup, and an electrode resting on the shoulder formed on the reduced bottom part, said electrode also passing through the recess formed in the flange of the porous cup, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a galvanic battery, the combination,
with a containing-jar provided in its neck with a recess and having a reduced bottom part, of a porous cup resting with its lower end in said reduced bottom part of the jar, an annular flange formed on the upper end of said porous cup and having a recess, and a positive electrode restingwith its lower end on the shoulder formed by said reduced bottom part,
said electrode also passing through the recess in the neck of the jar and through the recess IO in the flange of the porous cup, substantially as shown and described.
