E. B. BENHAM.
PITMAN AND CNANK CONNECTION.
Patented A -NITED STATES PATENT erica.
ELIJAH B. BENHAM, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PITIVIANAND=CRANK CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,850, dated April 10, 1888.
Application filed August 29, 1887. Serial No. 245,143. (No model.)
the object being to provide an improved con,
struction for the end of the pitman which engages with the crank-pin and means for securing it to the latter, said improvements being particularly adapted to multiple-cylinder engines; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the crank-pin ends of the pitmen, together with means for attaching them to said crank-pins, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specication, Figure l is a front elevation of a multipleeylinder engine having pitmenembodying my improvements, said figure illustrating the end of the crank-pin`and the ends 0f the pitmen surrounding the latter, with the crank-pin cup removed, and showing the side of one of the cylinders broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the crank anda portion of the driving-shaft of the engine, together with the ends of two of the pitmen, showing the crank-pin cup and its securing-nut in section.
ln the drawings, 2 indicates the cylinders of the engine radiating from a common center, and provided with suitable pistons, b, each of said pistons having attached thereto a pitman, 8. The shaft 8 ofthe engine extends rearwardly from a central point between the inner ends of the cylinders 2, and has thereon the crank B, of which 6 is the crankpin having the reduced screwthreaded end 7. A steel sleeve, 5, is iitted onto said crank-pin, andis preferably hardened to provide a bearing for the ends of the pitmen of greater dura bility than iron or softer metal than steel, thereby reducing the friction between the crank-pin and the pitmen.
K, Fig. 1, indicates a part of the standard on which the engine is supported. Each of said pitmen 8 is provided with an arm, 4, on its lower end, or that which is connected to the crank-pin, at right angles to the length of the pitman and extending toward the end of said pin. Each of said pitmanarms has formed thereon a lateral offset, a, whereby the endof the pitman is caused to have a broad base, which rests against the sleeve 5 on the crank-pin.
In Fig. 2, 8 indicates a portion of the drivngfshait ofthe engine, extending from the rear side of the crank B, said shaft being indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l.
The said arms '4 of the pitmen are locked together on the sleeve 5 of the crank-pin 6 by the cylindrical cup 9, which fits over said arms, as shown in Fig.v 2, and a nut, l0, screwed onto the said reduced end 7 of the crank-pin holds said cup onto the latter and over the arms of the pitmen in t-he position shown.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. The within described pitman and-crank connection,consisting ofthe combination, with the pin of the crank, of the sleeve 5, inclosing said pin, a series of pitmen, each having an arm extending at right angles thereto toward the end of the crank-pin and bearing on the sides of said sleeve, and a cylindrical cup, 9, secured against the end of the crankpin and inclosing the arms of the pitmen,substantially as set forth.
2. The within-described pitman-and-crank connection, consisting ofthe cornbinatiomwilh the pin of the crank, of the sleeve 5, inclosing said pin, a series of pitmen, each having an arm extending at right angles thereto toward the end of the crank-pin bearing on the sides of said sleeve, said arms having a lateral offset, a, on one side, and a cylindrical cup, 9, secured against the end of the crank-pin and inclosing` the arms of the pitmen, substantially as set forth.
3. The withinsdescribed pitnianandcrank connection, consisting ofthe combination,with the pin ofthe crank having the screw-threaded extension 7, of a sleeve covering said pin, a series of pitmen, each having an arm extend ing at right angles thereto toward the end of said pin and bearing on the sides ofsaid sleeve, a cylindrical cup inclosing said pitman-arms and crank-pin, and a nut screwing on said crank-pin extension, substantially as set forth.
