UNITED STATES PATEN'r JONATHAN B. HAMILTON, OF MINNEAPOLIS,MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF GNE-HALF TO LYMAN R. PALMER, OF SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR COOLING 0R WARMING THE RECTUM AND VAGlN A.
SPEClPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,626, dated April 3, 1888.
Application filed August IT, 1887. Serial No. 248,015. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN R. HAMIL- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis,in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cooling or warming the Rectum or Vagina, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view,of an instrument con taining my improvements. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged transverse sectional views of the same on the lines :0 a: and 3 y, respectively. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are side views showing the head, plug, and cylindrical body of theinstrument in detail; and Fig. 8 shows a similar instrument having its body and interior tubes flexible.
A in the drawings designates the cylindrical body of the instrument, made of metal, vulcanized rubber, or other suitable material, and of suitable length and diameter to enter the Walls of the canal and carry the instrument-head to the parts to be treated.
B is a plug, of hard rubber or other nonco'nductor of heat, filling the forward end of the cylinder A, and provided with a flange, b, against which the end a of the cylinder abuts.
G is the tubular metallic head of the instrument, having a suitably rounded and closed outer end, 0, and having its inner end, 0, fitted on the projecting portion of the plug B and abutting its flange b, so that the adjacent ends of the two tubular portions of theinstrument are separated by a non-conducting substance. Obviously a loose ring or washer on the plug B can be substituted for the flange b, to serve a like purpose.
e and f are tubes, respectively, for the induction and eduction of a fluid for raising or lowering the temperature of the instru menthead O, and they extend from without the rear end through the body A and plug B and open into the chamber of the headpiece C. The tubes are inserted through holes in a cap-piece, a, which may be secured on or formed integrally with the rear end of the cylinder A. The forward ends of the tubes are fitted and secured in holes extending through the plugB, so that the tubes are supported free from contact with the sides of the cylinder and are surrounded by an air-space. In the cap a are holes a for the circulation of air between the exterior and interior of the cylinder, to avoid undue heating of the cylinder.
The exposed .ends of the tubes 6 and f are provided with suitable heads, 6 f, for attaching other tubes or flexible pipes, one for introducing the fluid by means ot'a syringe, force-pump, reservoir, or other means for expelling fluid under pressure and forcing it through the tubes 2 and f, and the other for conducting the fluid away from the instrument.
It will be obvious that in use, by the intro duction of a hot or cold fluid by means of the tubes 6 and f to the chamber of the headpiece, the temperature of the metallic head can be raised or lowered to any proper de gree and regulated as desired for the treatment of the internal partswith which the in strument-head is brought in contact, while the plug B and its flange and the air-space intervening between the tubes and the body of the instrument avoid the heating or cooling of the body of the instrument to an extent that would be uncomfortable for the integuments in contact with it.
The instrument illustrated in Fig. 8 is similar in its construction and operation to that described, but has its body and induction and eduction tubes of flexible material, so that the instrument is adapted for use in devious passages. 4
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In an instrument of the character described, a long tubular body, a closed metallic head, a non-conducting plug coupling the same and provided with a non-conducting flange or ring for separating the ends of the body and head, and induction and eduction tubes extending through the body and plug to the chamber of the head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JONATHAN R. HAMILTON.
