K. M. DUPFEY.
BED PAN. No. 880,478. Patented Apr. 3, 1888.
Z g a M I 0 0 0 y B "/194 B S T c WITNESSES NrrED STATES PATnNr rricnt KATE MISSOURI DUFFEY, OF ASTORIA, OREGON.
BED-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,478, dated April 3, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatLKA'r-n MISSOURI DUFFEY, of Astoria, in the county of Glatsop and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Pan, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a bed-pan which can be used with but little inconvenience to the patient, can be easily cleaned, and will prevent soiling of the bedding either by the patientin attending to the calls of nature or by the attendant in giving injections; and to these ends the invention consists in details of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, the cap for closing the discharge pipe or neck being detached and in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line as m, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. i is a crosssection on line 3 y of Fig. 3.
The body A of the bed-pan is formed with the main opening a, the part of the said body surrounding the said opening at the rear thereof being raised, as at b, and gradually lowering to the front of said opening, as at c. The rear raised end, I), terminates in the inwardly-pro jccting portion d, which forms the highest point of the pan and is adapted to project between the limbs of the patient, and thus effectually prevent soiling of the bedding when the pan is being used. The extreme front end, A, of the pan is made narrow and the upper surface at the narrowed end is concaved, as at a, to form a better rest for that portion of the patients body resting thereon.
At the rear end, at the bottom, the pan is formed with the discharge neck or pipe B, which is externally-threaded to adapt it to receive an internally-threaded cap, B, during an evacuation by the patient, and which cap may be removed and a hose, 0, substituted therefor when the patient is receiving an injection or during the application of a medicinal wash, or when otherwise needful.
In practice the hose 0 will be arranged to convey liquid contents of the pan to a vessel on the floor, and be provided with a clasp arranged to stop the flow of liquid through the pipe when desired. At the rear end, also, above the delivery-neck B, a hahdlc, D, is formed on the pan. By thus forming the handle in proximity to the liquid-discharge neck great convenience is afforded for arranging the pan, especially when the hose 0 is applied, and with but little inconvenience to the pa tient. In one side of the pan is formed a spout, E, close to the body of the pan, by means of which spout the pan is easily emptied of fzcces.
My improved bed-pan, besides possessing the advantages set forth above, may be easily and thoroughly cleansed by reason of the neck B and spout E.
The cover F for the main opening a and the cover G for the spout E are made to conform to the respective openings, and are for convenience connected together by a chain, H.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The bed-pan A, formed with the main opening a, the rear portion of the pan being raised, as at Z), the said raised portion terminating in a point, (I, projecting into the main opening a in an upward and inward direction, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 2. The bed-pan A, formed with the main opening a, the end discharge-neck, B, the handle D in proximity to said discharge-neck, and the spout E in one side of the pan, sub stantially as and for the purposes specified.
