Abstract

In the continuous casting of metals, secured on the pulling members of endless chains which serve to withdraw an ingot from a mould are shaped insert pieces which are in direct contact with the ingot. These shaped pieces make it possible to withdraw the ingot without distorting its profile.

7 Claims, 7 Drawing Figures DEVICE FOR INGOT WITHDRAWAL FROM MOULI) DURING CONTINUOUS CASTING OF METALS BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the field of continuous casting of metals.
Known in the prior art is a device for withdrawing ingots from a mould during continuous casting of metals, incorporating a pulling stand with spring-biased upper and lower rollers on which stand are mounted freely rotating drums wrapped with endless chains made up of pulling members embracing the ingot on both sides.
However the aforesaid known device is unsuitable for withdrawing hollow ingots and those of round and shaped cross-sections. The rollers of the pulling stand create heavy unit loads acting on the ingot (a load per roller can amount to tons and even more); as a result the ingot is distorted and its surface is covered with microcracks, a condition which adversely affects ingot quality.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of this invention to develop a device for withdrawing ingots from a mould during continuous casting of metals which will reduce unit load on the ingot constituted by pulling members and will not distort the ingots in the course of withdrawal from the mould.
The above specified and other objects are achieved in a proposed device for withdrawing ingots from a mould during continuous casting of metals incorporating a pulling stand with spring-biased upper and lower rollers on which stand are set up drums which are free to rotate and are wrapped with endless chains made up of pulling members embracing the ingot on both sides.
According to this invention, secured on the pulling members are shaped insert pieces whose area of contact with the ingots ensures the withdrawal of the ingot without distorting its profile.
It is preferred to use shaped insert pieces whose perimeter of contact with the ingot (in its cross-section) amount to 80-90 percent of the ingot profile.
With the shaped insert pieces embracing the ingot in the above manner an optimum area of contact between the inserts and ingot is achieved which prevents the ingot from being distorted by the pulling members.
In compliance with the present invention a device is developed intended for withdrawing ingots from a mould during continuous casting of metals which ensures the withdrawal of the ingots with preserved undistorted profile.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS To present the present invention more clearly described below are exemplary embodiments to be considered with due reference to the appended drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a device for withdrawing ingots from a mould during continuous casting, conforming to the present invention;
FIGS. 2 through 7 depict cross-sections of insert pieces employed in withdrawing ingots of various profiles.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Mounted on pulling stand 1 (FIG. 1) with upper 2, 2a and lower 3 and 3a rollers are two freely revolving drums 4 wrapped with endless chains 5 encompassing ingot 6 on both sides and intended to withdraw it from a mould (not shown in the drawing).
Endless chain 5 is made up of links 7 interconnected 0 with the aid of pins 8 and comprising pulling members 9 on which are secured (on the ingot side) shaped insert pieces 10. Shafts ll of drums 4 are mounted in sliding bearings l2, arranged on supports 13 rigidly fixed on pulling stand 1. Shafts of rollers 2a and 3a are made fast on pulling stand I and rollers 2 and 3 are biased with springs l4 and are allowed to move with the pulling stand in operation.
When pulling stand 1 is in operation, rollers 2, 2a, 3 and 3a set in motion endless chains 5 rolling on freely revolving drums 4. As a result shaped insert'pieces 10 are gradually forced by the rollers of pulling stand .1 against the lateral face of ingot 6. With the contact perimeter of shaped insert pieces 10 amounting in crosssection to -90 percent of the ingot profile, the ensuring contact surface of pieces It) ensures preservation of the ingot profile during the withdrawing operation. The length of shaped insert pieces is equal to three-fourths of the distance between upper 2 and lower 3 rollers.
FIGS. 2 through 7 show cross-sectional views of insert pieces 10 and ingots 6. Thus FIGS. 2 and 3 provide cross-sectional views of round insert pieces and round and annular ingots. FIG. 4 illustrates ingots and insert pieces having an elliptical cross-section. FIG. 5 shows an I-beam cross-section while FIG. 6 shows a box-type cross-section and FIG. 7 illustrates an angle-type crosssection.
We claim:
ll. A device for withdrawing ingots from a mould during continuous casting of metals comprising: a pulling stand with upper and lower driving rollers; two revolving drums rotatably secured to said pulling stand relative to its longitudinal horizontal axis and mounted so that said ingot passes therebetween during operation of said device; a pair of movable endless chains, one of which is disposed around one of said drums, the other of which is disposed around the other of said drums, said endless chains having interconnected links interacting with said upper and lower rollers of said pulling stand so that said chains are driven thereby; profiled insert means secured to each of the links of said pair of endless chains, said insert means having profiles corresponding in shape to the exterior shape of the ingot being cast; means causing at least one of said rollers to urge each link of one of said endless chains against one side of said ingot and at least another one of said rollers to urge each link of the other of said endless chains against the other side of said ingot, so that successive opposing ones of said insert means on each of said chains respectively, conformably embrace said ingot as said chains move around said drums under the action of said driving rollers, whereby said ingot is withdrawn from the mold without distortion of its profile.
2. A device, as claimed in claim 11, wherein two opposing ones of said insert means embrance between 80 to percent of the surface of said ingot when said ingot passes between said driving rollers.

6. A device, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the profile of the surfaces of two opposite insert means in contact with said ingot is the shape of a box.
7. A device, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the profile of the surfaces of two opposite insert means in contact with the ingot is the shape of an angle.

Claims (7)

1. A device for withdrawing ingots from a mould during continuous casting of metals comprising: a pulling stand with upper and lower driving rollers; two revolving drums rotatably secured to said pulling stand relative to its longitudinal horizontal axis and mounted so that said ingot passes therebetween during operation of said device; a pair of movable endless chains, one of which is disposed around one of said drums, the other of which is disposed around the other of said drums, said endless chains having interconnected links interacting with said upper and lower rollers of said pulling stand so that said chains are driven thereby; profiled insert means secured to each of the links of said pair of endless chains, said insert means having profiles corresponding in shape to the exterior shape of the ingot being cast; means causing at least one of said rollers to urge each link of one of said endless chains against one side of said ingot and at least another one of said rollers to urge each link of the other of said endless chains against the other side of said ingot, so that successive opposing ones of said insert means on each of said chains respectively, conformably embrace said ingot as said chains move around said drums under the action of said driving rollers, whereby said ingot is withdrawn from the mold without distortion of its profile.
2. A device, as claimed in claim 1, wherein two opposing ones of said insert means embrance between 80 to 90 percent of the surface of said ingot when said ingot passes between said driving rollers.
3. A device, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the profile of the surfaces of two opposite insert means in contact with said ingot is a circle.
4. A device, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the profile of the surfaces of two opposite insert means in contact with said ingot is an ellipse.
5. A device, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the profile of the surfaces of two opposite insert means in contact with said ingot is the shape of an H-beam.
6. A device, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the profile of the surfaces of two opposite insert means in contact with said ingot is the shape of a box.
7. A device, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the profile of the surfaces of two opposite insert means in contact with the ingot is the shape of an angle.
