Be it known that I, HOWARD GAMBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Feed-Box and Dump End-Gate for \Vagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in a combined feed-box and dump end-gate for wagons.

The object is to' utilize the back of the feedbox as a brace to hold the parts of the dumping end'gate in alignment when the latter is adjusted to close the end of the wagon, and to provide a simple and efficient combination of end-gate and feed box, whereby the feed-box may be supported in a convenient position to feed the horse and at the same time not interfere to any considerable degree with the ready removal of the end-gate itself.

Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the combined feed-box and endgate in position to close the end of the wagon; and Fig. 2 is a view in perspectiveshowing the hinged portion of the end-gate swung away from the back of the feed-box, as in dumping.

A A represent the sides of the wagon-body provided with upright cleats a, as is usual, to form the grooves a to retain the ends of the dumping end-gate. The dumping end gate consists of two sections, B and O, hinged together, as shown at b, and their ends being beveled or rounded, as shown at c, for the purpose of enabling the sections to swing readily out of the grooves a when the hinged ends of the said gate-sections are pushed outwardly, as in dumping. The said end-gate sections are also preferably provided with cleats D near their ends, for the purpose of preventing splitting, and also to form bearings for guiding the board into its closed adjustment when for any purpose it is desired to slide it into position.

preferably extends from the inner edge of one of the cleats D to the inner edge of the other, as shown, and has a depth about equal to the width of the end-gate itself. These dimensions are, however, purely arbitrary and may be varied to suit the demands of any particular case, so long as the back E is of such a length and stiffness as to afford an efficient brace for holding the hinged sections of the endgate in alignment. One of the hinged sections-G, for exam ple-is firmly secured to the back E of the feed-box by bolts e, or other suitable fastening devices, while the other section, B, is capable of being swung back away from the back E of the box. The freelyswinging sectionB is provided with means for securely locking it to the back E when desired. A simple and efficient fastening device is that shown in the drawings, in which the hinged section B is provided with a staple or eyebolt, F, projecting rearwardly from it and adapted to pass through a socket or slot, G, formed in the back E of the feedbox, and projecting through the said back E far enough to admit of the insertion of a key or pin, g. The ends oi the feed-box are represented by d, the front by e, and the bottom by 6 Theirsize andshape are convenientlysuch as represented in the drawings, but may be varied to suit anyindividual case. When the end-board is adjusted in the end of the wagon,

as shown in Fig. l, with its hinged sections in alignment, the said sections are locked in their position by means ofthe key, which is inserted in the staple, and when it is desired to dump the load the key is removed from the staple, and the pressure of the load will forthwith cause the center of the end-gate to bulge outwardly, the section Bswinging apart from the back E of the box and allowing the ends of the end-gate to turn out of the grooves at the sides At the same time the operator, by grasping the end of the feed-box in his hand, can swing the combined endgate and box off to one side, out of the way of the load dumped, or, if it is not essential to so do, the end-board may be'allowed to take care ofitself and be subsequently extricated from the dumped material.

The box, whenever the end-gate is adjusted to close the end of the wagon, is in a convenient position for receiving the feed for the horse.

It adds but little to the weight of the endgate, and it is not liable to be misplaced, or through carelessness or inadvertence lost by the way, and its back E serves the double function of a wall for the box and a brace for holding the hinged sections in alignment. In Fig. 1 the box is shown with a single compartment, while in Fig. 2 a partition is inserted to form two compartments.

It is evident that slight changes might be made in the forms and arrangement of the several parts Without departing from the spirit and scopeof myinvention; hence Ido notwish to limit myself strictly to the construction herein shown and described; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the dump endgate having a hinge joint intermediate of its ends, of afeedbox permanently secured there to, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the dumping endgate consisting of hinged sections, of a feedbox firmly secured to one of the sections and movably secured to the other section, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described combined end-gate and feed-box, consisting, essentially, of the end-gate formed of two sections hinged together, and the feed-box having its back permanently secured to one of the said hinged sections, and a locking device for securing the other hinged section to the back of the box, substantially as set forth.
