SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.379,350, dated March 13, 1888.

.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jornv F. WATERMOLEN,
. of Green Bay, in the county of Brown and the machine.
State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Lawn-Mower, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to lawn-mowers constructed with a finger-bar and a cutter-bar reciprocating in the guard-fingers of the fingerbar similar to an ordinary mowing-machine; and the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1' is a plan view of my new and im' proved lawn-mower. Fig. 2 isasectional elevation taken on the liner m of Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a side view of the machine. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the part K of the casing and of the wheels M N, the parts J being removed and the shafts A and N shown in section, said section being taken on the lineyg of Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is asectional plan view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a plan view of one of the clutch-pieces. Fig. 7 is aside elevation of the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation through the center of Fig. 9 is a detail end elevation; and Figs. 10, 11, and 12 show the clutch-block,
notched wheel D, and the actuated dog If.
Upon the axle Aare placed the two clutchblocks B 0. (See Figs. 1, 5, and 6.) The clutch-block B is formed with the sleeve b,- projecting outward, and also with the clutchhalf b, projectinginward toward the center of the machine, and it is provided with the spring-actuated dog b". Upon the sleeve b'is placed the drive-wheel D, and on which the wheel is free to turn backward in backing the machine. The dog 6 in connection with notches b in the hub of the drivewheel D, serves to lock the drive-wheel D and the cl utchblock 13 together upon the forward movement of the machine, so that both block and wheel turn together upon the axle A.
The clutch-block G is formed with the outwardly-projecting sleeve 0 and with the inwardly-projecting clutch-half c, and is pro its ends, as shown at d d, to engage with the notched clutch-halves b c, as shown clearly'in Fig. 1, so that the power of both drive-wheels is exerted upon the clutch-block G and sleeve 0 when the machine is moved forward upon the ground for turning said clutch-block and sleeve, which communicates reciprocating mo tion to the cutter-bar Gin the finger-bar H, as hereinafter described.
I represents the main frame of the machi me, by which it is pushed over the ground, and J J represent the front side pieces, which carry the finger-bar H in front of the dri've-wheels. The frame I and side pieces, J J, are secured upon the ends of the axle A outside of the drive-wheels by nuts a a, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. The side piece J is formed with a plate, J, which is slightly dished, as shown in Fig. 5, and through which the axle A and sleeve 0 pass. Bolted to the plate J is a casing or housing piece, K, which, together with the plate J incloses the gearing and the shaft 1, for transmitting motion from the sleeve 0 to the shaft L, which shaft in turn reciprocates the cutter-bar, the same being connected thereto by an ordinary, crank'pin, L. The gearing for the transmission of motion con sists of the large gear-wheel M, secured upon the sleevec, the pinion N, secured to the short shaft N, the beveled gear 0, also secured to the shaft N, and the beveled gear 1?, secured upon the shaft L, all as shown clearly in Figs. 4 and 5. The shaft L is carried at right angles to the sleeve 0 in an extension, K, of the housing K, as shown in Fig; 5, and the short shaft N isjournaled at its inner end in a partition, a, of said extension, while its outer end is jour naled in the plate J", as shown clearly in Fig. 5.
The end of one of the side frames, I, abuts against the end of the housing K, as shown clearly in Fig. 7 while the opposite side frame I engages with the side piece J by means of alip or fiange,j, as shown clearly in Fig. 9, so that the said frames cannot be rocked uponthe axle A without lifting or lowering the out ter-bar.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to sccurejby Letters Patent 1. In a lawn'mo'wer, the chambered plate K, formed with the hollow side extension, K, forming the bearings for the shaft L,and formed with the partition a, in which one end of the counter-shaft N takes a bearing, in combination with the chambered plate J secured to the plate K, and both placed loosely upon the sleeve 0 of the clutch-block O, substantially as described.
2. In a lawn mower, the side piece J, formed with the dished extension J and the housing K, formed with the extension K and partition a, and secured to the dished exten' sion, the said dished extension and housing being apertured for passage of the axle, and serving to support and inclose the driving-gearing, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a lawn-mower, the combination of the axle, a sleeve thereon provided with the gear M, the cutting mechanism, the counter-shaft geared with the axle, the crank-shaft geared with the counter-shaft, and the gearing-support formed of the sections rigidly united, one section being formed with the extension K, having the partition a for one of the journals of the counter-shaft, the whole being loosely mounted on the sleeve of the axle and inclosing the gears M N O P, substantially as herein shown and described.
