UNITED STATES PATENT ()EEICE.
PATRICK H. GRIFFIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
LAMP-SHADEi-IOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,883, dated March 6, 1888.
Serial No. 234,354. (No model.)
passed through the eyes B B of the frame and To aZZ whom, itvmay concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK H. GRIFFIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp Shade Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved lamp-shade holder attached to a lampchimney, and Fig. 2 is a central section through the holder and shade detached from the chimney.
My invention relates to the construction of an adjustable holder for supporting a detachable eard or shade-piece upon the chimney of a lamp; and it consists of an arrangement and combination of a wire frame and hooks with an adjusting-screw and holding-clips, substantially as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a single wire bent to form a trilateral rectangular frame, having a coil, B, at each of its angles, and whose two free ends are bent to form hooks G O, projecting at a right angle with the frame and adapted to engage the top of a lampchimney. This hook-frame is reenforced by a transverse strip or plate of sheet metal, D, whose two ends are bent around the two lateral bars of the frame to encircle and clasp the same. A strip or plate of sheet metal, E, is made fast to the under side of the transverse strip D, to project therefrom at a right angle therewith, and is bent in a curve in the direction of the eyes B B of the frame A.
A holding-arm is formed of two lengths of wire, F F, each of which is bent at each end in the same direction and in a rectangular form, one of the ends being coiled in a loop, G, as an ornamental finish, and the other coiled into an eye, H, to form a hinge. These two pieces of wire are united by a strip of sheet metal, K, whose two ends are bent around the ends of each wire F F next to the eyes H H, so as to clasp the same closely. This compound arm, formed of the two wires F F and the interposed plate or strip K, is hinged to the hook-frame by means of a straight hinge-pin, L, which is through the interposed eyes H H of the arm, as shown in Fig. 1.
A set-screw, L, is made to work through an aperture in the central plate, K, of the arm to bear against the bent plate E of the hook-plate, and thereby hold the arm at an angle of inclination more or less obtuse with the hooleframe.
Clips N N are attached to the wires F F of the holding-arm to take hold of the card P, which is to serve as a shade, and these clips consist each of a strip of sheet metal doubled around the wire and clasped thereto, the ends projecting in the form of two leaves which are in close contact. The card is held fast by simply inserting its upper edge between the leaves of the clip, their elasticity serving to hold it securely.
By the use of this device an ornamental card may be suspended from the lamp-chimney as a shade, and be adjusted to any angle of inclination.
In use the hooks G G are slipped over the top of the chimney to embrace its edge, and the hook-frame A D is thereby held out at about a right angle from the chimney, while the holding-arm F K F, hinged to its outer end, will depend therefrom at an angle of inclination which is varied more or less from the perpendicular by means of the set-screw M.
Any suitable card or shade-piece may be inserted in the clips M M.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a lamp-shade support, the holder constructed of two wires, each bent at a right angle to form arms of unequal length, the shorter arms being coiled to form terminal eyes, in combination with a coupling plate clasping and uniting said arms, and clips secured to the longer arms, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination,in alamp-shade support, of a hook-frame constructed of a wire whose ends are bent to form hooks, and whose intermediate portion is bent in the form of a parallelogram having its angles coiled to constitute eyes, a transverse re-enforce plate, a holder constructed of two wires, each bent to form arms of unequal length, the ends of the shorter arms being coiled to form eyes, a central plate clamping at its ends said shorter arms, clips secured In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
PATRICK H. GRIFFIN.
