THOMAS P. HOLT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE G. W1 8: F. SMITH IRON COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
Fl REEESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming pari: of Letters Patent No. 378,316, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed July l1, 1887. Serial No. 243,958. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, THoMns l?. HOLT, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fire-Escapes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to lire escapes, and has for its object to improve the construction and cheapen the cost of the same.
My improved fire-escape comprises a folding ladder counterbalanced by a weight suspended near the top of the building to which the ladder is attached, the said ladder being easily let down and folded up, as desired.
The particular features in which my invenltion consists will be pointed out inthe claims at the end of this specification.
Figure l shows asuflicient portion of abuilding provided with my improved fire-escape to enable my invention to be readily understood. Fig. 2 is aview of a seetionof theladder broken off and on an enlarged scale, the ladder being let down; Fig. 3, a similar lview as Fig. 2with the ladder folded up, and Fig. 4 a top view of Fig. 2.
Referring to Fig. l, A. representsabuilding to which is attached my improved lire-escape or ladder.
The ladder referred to (shown best in Fig. 4) has its sides made, as shown, of channelbars a a', to which are pivoted, as at 0.2 0.3, the rounds a* of the ladder. The channel-bar a is secured to the building A in a desired or welllcnown manner, and has attached to it side pieces, l), which form with the baci; piece, D', ofthe channel-bar a a chamber, in which the rounds are concealed and protected from inclement weather when the ladder is folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, the back piece, b', being shown as secured to the channel-bar ci by bolts b2. (See Fig. e.) The channel-bar et has secured to it a rope, chain, or cable, c, extended upward and passed about pulleys c ci, as herein shown, at' the top of the building, the said rope or cable having attached to its other end, as shown7 a weight, d, (see dotted lines, Fig. l,) which substantially counterbalances the weight ofthe channel-bar aand rounds pivoted thereto.
The ladder, as shown in Fig. l, is in position ready for use, and if it is desired to fold up the ladder it is only necessary to push upward on the side a', the weight d serving to keep the ladder in its folded position (shown in Fig. 3) until it is again positively unfolded or pulled down.
I claim-- 1. In a fire-escape, the channel-bar a, having side pieces, b, combined with the channel-bar a', having a back, b', and with rounds a", pivoted to said channel-bars, the said baci; b cooperating with the sides b to form a chamber when the ladder is folded up, and wherein the rounds are concealed and protected from in clement weather, substantially as described.
2. n attire-escape, the channel-bara, having side pieces, b, combined withthe channel-bar a', having a back, b', and with rounds at, pivoted to said channel-bars, the said back b cooperating with the sides b to form a chamber when the ladder is folded up, and wherein the rounds are concealed and protected from inclement weather, and with acounterbalancingweight, d, attached to the upper end of the sides a', substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS P. HOLT.
