CUFF HOLD ER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JOHN DHALL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUFF-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,753, dated February 14, 1888."
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadel phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat and Dress Sleeve Oufi' Attachments; and I do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanyi'ng drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The special object of my inventionis to make a coat and dress sleevecuff attachment which will enable a person to quickly and easily at-' tach a cuff, cause the cuff to show the same margin, whether the arm be raised up or hanging down, and also to come off with the sleeve. The latter is a great convenience, especially to business men, clerks, and working people who may wish to remove their cuffs when at business or work.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention applied; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the attachment, and Fig. 3 a perspective view ofa modification of my attachment. Fig. 41 is a perspective View of a cufffastener made of wire.
In the drawings, A represents my cuff attachment, which consists of two end curved and toothed jaws, a a, arms a a, and cars a a.
Serial No. 238.976. (No modelo The modification shown in Fig. 3 is the same in principle as the device showntin Fig. 1; but I use a spring'clamp, F, instead ofthe button E, and make the jaws .G G of plate- 5 springs, the latter'facing each other. By my invention a ladys or gentlemans cuff may be attached to the lining of dress or coat sleeves rather than to the under-garments.
In using the device shown in the first figure of the drawings, insertthe button in the button-holes of a cuff; thenslip on the cuff under the coat-sleeve, and fasten to the lining of the sleeve by opening the j aws by pressure with the finger and thumb on the arms a a; then with another finger press the lining of the sleeve down between the jaws a a. After experimenting a few times it may be done quickly and with little or no trouble. \Vith the modification shown in Fig. the drawings the attachment is'held by clamp F to the cuff, while the jaws G G hold the lining. p
When made of wire, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the jaws a a, which grasp the sleeve-lining, are opened by pressing the arms (1 d of the tongueD together, and closed by their own spring-tension while the button is secured in the button-holes of the cuff. i, What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
A cuff-holder having the jaws a at, arms a a, pivot B in ears a of, spring 0, having-ends c c, and plate D, carrying the button E, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturei'n presence of two witnesses.
JOHN D. HALL.
