Description

United States Patent Griffin Nov. 6, 1973 SWEDE FOR OPEN-END WRENCHES Primary Examiner0thell M. Simpson [76] Inventor: William 1). Griffin, Box 246,
Underwood, Wash. 9865] [22] Filed: Mar. 13, 1972 [21] Appl. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART Means commonly used and employed to increase the leverage on a open-end wrench have included fabricating the body portion of aopen-end wrench with a long configuration or by slipping a segment of hollow, cylindrical conduit, such as pipe, over the open-end wrench. Fabricating an open-end wrench requires that a mechanic own a larger number of wrenchesforeach leverage factor which he may require. Disposing a pipe over an open-end wrench is dangerous because the nutengaging portion of the wrench has a comparatively wide outer configuration and therefore requires a pipe of wide diametenThe handle portion, however, tends to have a relatively narrow configuration. These facts together result in a loose-fitting pipe on a open-end wrench. This is dangerous to the safety of the mechanic, and is cumbersome in operation.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a swede means for open-end wrenches operable to increase the leverage on a wrench.
It is another object of this invention to provide swede means for open-end wrenches which is operable to conveniently, securely engage a wrench to facilitate efficient operation and safety to a mechanic when using the swede means.
These and other objects shall become apparent from the description following, it being understood that modifications may be made without affecting the teachings of the invention here set out.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Generally, the swede for open-end wrenches of the present invention comprises a handle portion having a substantially elongated configuration along the rectilinear axis of the swede, and a body portion disposed along the rectilinear axis of the swede having a substantially rectangular wrench-engaging socket having its rectilinear axis along the rectilinear axis of the swede. The socket is operable to slidably engage one of the projecting jaws of a open-end wrench and to provide leverage thereto.
A more thorough and comprehensive understanding may be had from the detailed description of the preferred embodiment when read in connection with the drawings forming a part of this specification.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a right rear perspective view of the swede for open-end wrenches of this invention.
FIG. 2 is a bottom left front perspective view of the apparatus of the FIG. I.
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially along the lines 3-3 of the FIG. 2 showing the interior configuration of this invention and showing a typical wrench in broken lines for illustrative purposes carried in the swede of this invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT:
Referring now tothe drawings and, more particularly, to the FIGS. 1 and 2, the swede for oepn-end wrenches of this invention is shown to advantage and generally identified by the numeral 10. The swede 10 may be conveniently divided into a handle portion 11 and a body portion 12. The handle portion 11 has a suitable configuration, elongated along the rectilinear axis of the swede 10, operable to comfortably fit a hand. The body portion 12 also has an elongated configuration along the rectilinear'axiis of the swede 10, operable to comfortably fit a hand. The body portion 12 also has an elongated configuration along the rectilinear axis of the swede 10. The handle portion 11 and the body portion 12 form a substantially flat plate-like swede lever 10,hereinafter later described. It has been found to advantage to fabricate the swede 10 of a heavy metal plate material from which the swede 10 may be cut and forged.
The body portion 12 is provided with a centrally disposed wrench-engaging socket 13. The socket 13 has a substantially rectangular configuration having its rectilinear axis along the rectilinear axis of the swede 10. Referring now to the FIG. 3, it is intended thatthe opening 14 ofa open-end wrench 15 be operable to en gage the end wall 16 of the socket 13 closest to the ham dle portion 11. The wrench 15 which is to be acted upon by the swede 10 is contacted by the end wall 17 of the socket 13 opposite the end wall 16. It has been found to advantage to chamfer the end wall 17 to provide a flat surface against which the edge of the wrench 15 may lie. The end wall 16 may be made to accommodate several sizes of openings 14 of wrenches 15 by suitably beveling the corners of the end wall 16 and the terminal side of the body portion 12. It has also been found to advantage to provide a spring urging means in one of the terminal side walls of the socket 13 operable to urge the wrench 15 against the side opposite the spring urging means. The spring urging means is operable to retain the wrench 15 within the socket 13 to facilitate positioning of the wrench 15 during work.
In operation the opening 14 of the wrench 15 may be engaged with the end wall of the socket 13. Force may be applied to the wrench 15 by forcing the handle portion 11 such that the end wall 17 of the socket 13 contacts the side of the wrench 15. It is to be understood that the distance between the socket l3 and the terminal end portions of the handle portion 11 determines the amount of additional leverage which the swede 10 can provide.
Having thus described in detail a preferred apparatus which embodies the concepts and principles of the invention and which accomplishes the various objects, purposes and aims thereof, it is to be appreciated and will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many physical changes could be made in. the apparatus without altering the inventive concepts and principles embodied therein. Hence, it is intended that the scope of the invention be limited only to the extent indicated in the appended claims.
