UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE. W
ROBERT D. MORGAN AND JOSEPH B. MORGAN, on MAOON CITY, MISSOURI..
FlFTH-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,779, dated Jntiaryzl,l 1888.
y Application filed September 22, 1887. Serial No. 250,425. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT D. MORGAN and JOSEPH R. MORGAMCniZenS of the United States, residing at Macon City, in the county of Macon and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fifth- -Vheels, of which the vfollowing is a specication.
Our invention relates to an improvement in fifth-wheels; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of ythe parts thereof,
which will be more fully hereinafter described,
and pointed out inthe claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in f the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 p isalongitudinal vertical' section on the line view of an improved form of fifth-wheel.
l side of the disk C. The hole c terminates in a square recess, o', which in turn opens into a semi-cylindrical recess, c2. A nut, C2, is seated in the square recess c', the sides of which bear against the sides of thersaid recess and is prevented thereby from turning. The bolt d engages with nut C2,and the disk C thereby united in movable connection with the disk D2. The upper side of the disk C is formed with two integral apertured ears, c2, adjacent tothe semi-cylindrical recessc2. To the front bolster of thebody of the vehicle a curved plate, E, is secured, which has a central depending apertured lug, c. This lug e fits inthe semi-cylindrical recess c2 and the aperture therein aligns with the apertures in the ears c2.
rIo the forward end of the reach-bar A a metallic end piece is.srecured, which consists, essentially,of two brace-pieces, ff', the one f being longer than the other, and-is secured to the underside of the said reach-bar. .The lower brace, f', is short and is provided with an upwardly-projecting apertured end, f2.
` 'Ihe two bracesf and f are integrally formed,
and at their point of meeting ascrew-threaded y' bolt, F, is integrally formed, which passes through the aperturein the ears c2 and the lug c and unites the disks D2 and C and allows them to have a'slight rockingmovement. The outer end of the bolt F is engaged by a nut, f3, and the parts thus secured. The
semicircle D rests in the rear ofthe upwardly? projecting 'end of the brace f', and when in this position another plate, ftfhaving a forf ward-projecting apertured end, f5, is mounted,
and readily applicable in connection with any form of vehicle or wagon, butv at the It will be observed that the improved form of fifthewheel is not only strong and durable same time allows aslight oscillating movementV to be taken up by the springs and inequalities of travel provided for without injuring theftifth-wheel. Having thus we claim as new is- 1. The combination of thereach A, the
braces f f secured, respectively, to the upperand lower sides of the reach and uniting described our invention, what at their forward ends in a common bolt, F,
the said bracef having a dependingportion, f2, therstrap f4, secured to the, under side of the reach, the friction-roller mou nted between the partsf2f4, the disk" C', andthe semicircle Y D, as s et forth.
2. The combination of the axle-beam -C,the
semicircle D,bolted thereto, the beam D', secured to the beam C, the disk\D2, formed integrally with the beamD,the disk 0,'pi'voted on the disk D2, the plate E, the reach carry; ing a friction-rollerwhich supports thesemicircle, and the braces ff', extending from-the A reach and uniting in a common bolt,kF, which' pivotally secures the plate E to the disk C', substantially as specified. e
IOO
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own'we have hereto aftlxed our signatures
