SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,564, dated January 17, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VANDIVER J. VAN HORN, of Goffs, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench, simply-and. cheaply constructed, wherewith a pipe may be readily gripped and turned when lying upon the floor or close to a wall, and wherein a large amount of leverage will be obtained with a small device, and wherein the device will hold firmly without slipping any-sizedpipe or nut within its capacity.
My invention consistsin the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of my Wrench when used where an ordinary wrench is applicable. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the wrench when used for pipe and similar articles. Fig. 4. is a transverse vertical section looking up on line at x of Fig. 2.
in carrying out the invention the station ary jaw A is fixed to a stock or handle, B, which stock from a point above the center is made rectangular, as shown at b, and below said rectangular portion b the sides are flattened and a thread, I), out therein, adapted to extend a distance below the center, as illustrated in Fig. '2. The lower end, b of the stock is preferably curved to facilitate grasping, and the surface thereof may be made rough or cross-hatched, if desired.
The movable jaw D is provided with a rect angular transverse and vertical aperture, d, adapted to receive the rectangular portion 1) of the stock, the said aperture being made wider than the stock portion b and enlarged from a point below the upper end downward, whereby two opposing shoulders, 01 and 11 are formed and the said jaw D allowed more or A leverarm, E, is made integral with the movable jaw D, which lever, extending down parallel with the stock,is curved in like manner at its lower end, 6.
Upon the threaded portion 1) of the stock a circular nut, F, is screwed, provided with the usual milled periphery, which nut is adapted, by beingmade to travel up or down the screw,to close or widen the distance between the jaws. This is accomplished by means of a following or adjusting rod, H. The rod H is made straight where it engages the flattened surface of the stock, which is at the upper end, being provided at said upper end,upon the outer side, with a recess, h, adapted to engage either shoulder cl d of the movablejaw. The lower end of the adj usting-rod is fitted with an inwardlyextending horizontal ring, H, adapted to travel upon the threaded portion of the stock immediately below the nut F. The said nut and adj usting-rod travel together, likewise the jaw D, engaged by said rod. This is effected by cutting a recess, k, in the inner face of the rod immediately above the ring H, into which recess the periphery of the nut F is entered, as shown in the drawings. The opposing faces of the two jaws A and D have transverse sawlike teeth or, adapted to interlock when the jaws are brought together. The teeth may be made integral with the jaws or produced upon a separate plate and attached thereto.
In operation,when the wrench is to be used for loosening or tightening nuts, the adjustingrod H is placed upon the inner or rear side of the stock, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, engaging the shoulder at; but when used as a pipe-wrench or as pinchers for extracting spring-keys from machinery, drawing nails, oras cobblers pinchers, the adjusting-rod is placed upon the-outer side of the stock, between it and the lever, engaging the shoulder d as shown in Fig. 3. When so positioned, a greater amount of leverage is obtained, as shown in dotted lines.
It will be observed that in turning a nut or manipulating pipe the wrench need not be removed and replaced at every turn, as the lever and lower jaw, acting as a traveling, pawl, cause the rotation to be continuous.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Awrench comprisinga fixed jaw,astock, a bar adjustable on the front or the rear face of the stock and having a recess in its outer face near its upper end, and the movablejaw provided with a lever and recessed for the reception of the stock, opposite shoulders being formed at the upper end of the said recess to engage the recess in the sliding bar, according to which side of the stock the bar is placed, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wrench, the combination, with the fixed jaw A,having an integral threaded stock, B, the nut F, traveling upon said threaded stock, and the carrying-rod H, provided with an integral ring, H, adapted to follow said nut, I 5 and a recess, 7;, adapted to receive the periphery of the nut, of the movable jaw D, provided with an attached lever-arm, E, an irregular aperture, cl, and shoulders d d at each side of said aperture, substantially as shown and de- 2o scribed, whereby the leverage may be increased or decreased, as desired.
