Abstract

Machines have been disclosed for forming a button stay side zipper patch and a fly side zipper patch as garment components for later incorporation into garments such as men''s pants; the button stay side machine consists of a combination of elements which takes separate pieces of zipper patch fed either invertingly or directly to a folding device where the patch is folded and pressed, thereafter joined with a zipper string, and in a serging sewing machine the zipper is sewn to the patch; in a zipper ''''gapper'''' device a certain number of zipper teeth are removed from the zipper string and, after a ''''top stop'''' placed on the zipper section string for the button stay side patch, the continuous and chained-together button stay side patch is placed in a cutting device where each individual button stay side zipper patch is cut from the others and thereafter stacked; another embodiment of the button stay side zipper patch machine is provided whereby individual patches are preformed in a ribbon and the ribbon is fed to the serging machine without pickup and folding of the individual patches; thus, the present button stay side machine is comprised of means for feeding an individual patch; means for inverting every other patch, if desired, means for folding each patch, means for pressing; means for feeding and sensing the feed of the zipper; means for serging; means for gapping the sewn button stay side zipper; means for placing a top stop on the zipper; and means for cutting each of the individual button stay side zipper components including means for stacking the same; the fly side zipper patch machine comprises a serging machine including means for feeding a ribbon of patches to the same, and a double needle flat bed sewing machine in-cluding the means for feeding the patches through it and through the serging machine and means for feeding the zipper string whereby the zipper string is sewn on the patch; further the fly side zipper patch machine includes the gapper means, but not the top stop means, and the cutting and stacking means.

Claims (33)

1. A zipper patch forming and sewing machine, the combination comprising: means for feeding a patch to a sewing machine; means for feeding a zipper string; means for feedingly joining said zipper string with said patch; means for guidingly and feedingly serging said zipper string to said patch, said means for feeding said patch and said means for feeding said zipper string being operatively interconnected with said means for serging; a first means for guiding said zipper string and patch sewn to it including means for turning outwardly said zipper, said means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said means for serging; means for gapping said zipper string including a first means for feeding said zipper string and patch, means for slowing and stopping said first means for feeding of said zipper string and said patch whereby a segment of said zipper teeth on said zipper string is properly placed in said means for gapping and removed therefrom by said means for gapping when said means for feeding is stopped, said means for gapping being operatively interconnected with said means for serging and first means for guiding said zipper string and patch sewn thereto; a second means for guiding said zipper string and patches, said second means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said means for gapping; means for placing a top stop on said zipper string including a second means for feeding said zipper string and said patch sewn thereto, a second means for slowing and stopping said second means for feeding of said zipper string and said patch whereby said zipper string is properly placed in said means for placing a top stop on said zipper string and a top stop is placed on said zipper string when said second means for feeding is stopped, said means for placing a top stop being operatively interconnected with said means for gapping, said second means for feeding and stopping and means for placing a top stop on said zipper string being further operatively interconnected with said second means for guiding; a third means for guiding said zipper string and patch, said third means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said means for placing a top stop on said zipper string; means for cutting of said zipper string including a third means for feeding said zipper string and said patch sewn thereto, a third means for slowing and stopping of said third means for feeding whereby said zipper string is placed in a proper cutting position, means for removing a patch from said zipper string, said third means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said third meanS for feeding and stopping and means for cutting said zipper string; and means for stacking said patch with a cut zipper string, said means for stacking being operatively interconnected with means for removing said cut patch from said means for cutting.
2. A zipper patch forming and sewing machine, the combination comprising: means for feeding a succession of patches to a serging machine including means for inverting a series of patches within said succession of patches and means for folding each of the patches; means for feeding a zipper string; means for guidingly and feedingly serging said zipper string to said succession of patches, said means for feeding said patches and said means for feeding said zipper string being operatively interconnected with said means for serging; a first means for guiding said zipper string and said patches sewn to it including means for turning outwardly said zipper teeth, said means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said means for serging; means for gapping said zipper string including a first means for feeding said zipper string and patches, means for slowing and stopping said feeding of said zipper string and said patches whereby a segment of said zipper teeth on said zipper string is properly placed in said means for gapping and removed therefrom by said means for gapping when said means for feeding is stopped, said means for gapping being operatively interconnected with said means for serging and first means for guiding said zipper string and patches sewn thereto; a second means for guiding said zipper string and patches, said second guide means being operatively interconnected with said means for gapping; means for placing a top stop on said zipper string including a second means for feeding said zipper string and said patches sewn thereto, a second means for slowing and stopping said second means for feeding of said zipper string and said patches whereby said zipper string is properly placed in said means for placing a top stop on said zipper string and a top stop is placed on said zipper string when said second means for feeding is stopped, said means for placing a top stop being operatively interconnected with said means for gapping, said second means for feeding and stopping and means for placing a top stop on said zipper string being further operatively interconnected with said second means for guiding; a third means for guiding said zipper string and patches, said third means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said means for placing a top stop on said zipper string; means for cutting of said zipper string between two patches including a third means for feeding said zipper string and said patches sewn thereto, a third means for slowing and stopping of said third means for feeding whereby said zipper string is placed in a proper cutting position and means for removing a patch with a cut zipper string from said zipper string, said third means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said third means for feeding and stopping and means for cutting said zipper string in a proper position; and means for stacking said patch with a cut zipper string including means for removing said patch from said means for cutting.
3. A zipper patch forming and sewing machine, the combination comprising: a serging sewing machine; means for repetitive feeding of a series of patches to said serging machine including means for raising and lowering a stack of patches in a first pickup position, means for picking up a top patch from said stack of patches; means for transferring said top patch from said stack of patches and depositing said top patch in a second, transfer position; means for reciprocating said means for transferring between said first pickup position and said second, transfer position; means for detaching said top patch from said means for transferring at said second, transfer position; means for returning said means for transferring tO said first pickup position including means for activating said means for picking up said top patch and means for initiating a repetitive pickup and transfer work cycle; means for conveying each detached patch; means for folding a patch operatively interconnected with said means for conveying said detached patch; means for conveying said folded patch into said serging machine; means for feeding a zipper string having zipper teeth thereon into said serging machine including means for sensing said feeding of said zipper string, said means for sensing being operatively interconnected with said means for feeding of said zipper and said serging machine; means for urging said patch and said zipper string sewingly through said sewing machine whereby said zipper and said patch is sewn together and each of said repetitively fed patches is sewn to said zipper string in a string of patches; a first guide means for said zipper string and said patches including a guide wheel movable between a first signal position and a second signal position and means for folding said zipper string whereby said teeth on said zipper string form one edge of said continuous string of patches, a first means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches; means for gapping a segment of zipper teeth in said zipper string including means for adjusting said segment within a single tooth position, said means for gapping being operatively interconnected with said first means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches whereby said zipper string is predeterminately positioned for gapping, said means for gapping being further operatively interconnected with said first signal position and second signal position on said first guide means for said zipper string and patches a second guide means for said zipper string and patches including a second guide wheel movable between a third signal position and a fourth signal position; a second means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches; means for placing a top stop on said zipper string including means for placing said zipper string in a predetermined position, said means for placing a top stop being operatively interconnected with said second means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches, said means for placing a top stop being further operatively interconnected with said third signal position and fourth signal position on said second guide means for said zipper string and patches, a third guide means including a third guide wheel movable between a fifth signal position and a sixth signal position; a third means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches; means for cutting said zipper string including means for placing in cutting position said zipper string, said means for placing in cutting position said zipper string being operatively interconnected with said third means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches, said means for cutting being further operatively interconnected with said fifth signal position and sixth signal position of said third guide means; and means for removing a zipper patch with a cut zipper string from said means for cutting said zipper string including means for stacking of same.

The zipper patch forming and sewing machine as defined in claim 1 and wherein the means for feeding a patch to the sewing machine comprises a motor, a shaft extension on said motor, a plurality of pinions on said shaft extension, a plurality of racks interconnected with said pinions, a table on top of said racks, means for activating said motor for a left hand and right hand rotation of said shaft whereby said table is reciprocated upwardly and downwardly, a fixed frame member, a plurality of rails above said table extending beyond said table and mounted in said fixed frame member, a carriage slideably mounted on said rails, said carriage including a supply reel, an engagement wheel, a taKeup reel, an adhesive tape on said supply reel interconnected via said engagement wheel to said takeup reel, a drive gear, a vertical frame member, a plurality of shafts on said vertical frame member comprising a first shaft for said supply reel, a second shaft for said engagement wheel, a third shaft for said takeup reel, a fourth shaft for said drive gear, said drive gear being operatively interconnected with said takeup reel; means for reciprocating said carriage on said rails between a pickup position and a transfer position, means for incrementally driving said drive gear on reciprocation of said carriage between said pickup and transfer position; and means for activating said rotation of said motor operatively interconnected with said carriage in said pickup position including means for initiating a pickup and transfer work cycle whereby a patch is picked off said table by said tape on said engagement wheel for transfer to said serging machine.

The zipper patch forming and sewing machine as defined in claim 1 and wherein the means for feeding a patch to the sewing machine comprises: a motor, a shaft attached to said motor, a plurality of pinions on said shaft, a plurality of racks interconnected with said pinions, a table attached to a vertical top part of said racks, means for activating said motor for a left hand and right hand rotation of said shaft whereby said table is reciprocated upwardly and downwardly, a guide means for said table adjacent to one side thereto, a guide means for said table at one end therefor, a vertical end part for said table, a fixed frame member, a plurality of rails directly above said table extending beyond said table and mounted in said fixed frame member, a carriage mounted on said rails, said carriage including a cross member, means for operably engaging said plurality of rails, said means for engaging said rails being interconnected to said cross member, a supply reel, an engagement wheel, a takeup reel, an adhesive tape on said supply reel interconnected via said engagement wheel to said takeup reel, a driven gear, a drive gear, a vertical carriage frame member attached to said cross member, a plurality of shafts on said vertical frame member comprising a first shaft for said supply reel, a second shaft for said engagement wheel, a third shaft for said takeup reel, a fourth shaft for said drive gear and for said driven gear, said drive gear being operatively interconnected with said takeup reel; means for reciprocating said carriage on said rails between a pickup position and a transfer position, a first frame member fixedly attached to said fixed frame member, including means for driving said driven gear operatively interconnected with said carriage and said driven gear thereon whereby said driven gear is incrementally advanced when said carriage is reciprocated between said pickup and transfer position; and means for activating said rotation of said motor operatively interconnected with said carriage in said pickup position including means for initiating a pickup and transfer work cycle whereby a patch is picked off said table by said tape on said engagement wheel for transfer to said serging machine.
6. The machine as defined in claim 5 including means for maintaining repetitive work cycles.
7. The machine as defined in claim 5 including means for aiding in separation of said patch from a next patch on said work table.
8. The machine as defined in claim 5 including means for removing a patch from said tape on said engagement wheel of said carriage at said transfer position.
9. The zipper patch forming and sewing machine as defined in claim 1 including means for folding the patches prior to said patches being joined with said zipper string by said means for feedingly joining, said feeding means comprising a conveyor, a motor for said conveyor, a first, a second and a third section of said conveyor, means for interlinking said first, second and third sections of said conveyor whereby each section of said conveyor moVes a work piece thereon at a similar velocity; said second and third conveyor sections being located adjacent each other and being spaced apart by an aperture therebetween in the feed direction of said first conveyor section; a frame over said second and third conveyor sections and said aperture; a blade slidably mounted in said frame in vertical alignment with said aperture; means for urging downwardly and upwardly said blade whereby said blade is slidably dependent from said frame; means for sensing the presence of a patch on said second and third conveyor sections over said aperture; means for activating at least once said means for urging downwardly said blade whereby said blade is pushed into engagement with a patch over said aperture and then enters the aperture with the patch to fold the patch in said aperture; means for pressing said patch in said aperture and means for conducting said patch from said aperture for feeding the same to said sewing machine.
10. The machine as defined in claim 9 and comprising a frame over said first conveyor section and a means for inverting a patch on said conveyor dependent from said frame.

The zipper patch forming and sewing machine as defined in claim 1 including means for folding the patch prior to the patch being joined with said zipper string by said means for feedingly joining, said folding means comprising a conveyor having a plurality of interlinked conveyor rollers in first, second and third sections; a motor for driving said interlinked conveyor rollers; an edge guide for a patch on said first and second sections of said conveyor rollers; said second and third conveyor sections being located adjacent each other and being spaced apart by an elongated aperture therebetween extending in the feed direction of said conveyor rollers; a blade insertable in said aperture; a frame over said second and third conveyor sections and said aperture wherefrom said blade is slidably dependent; means for reciprocating said blade downwardly and upwardly; means for sensing the presence of a patch on said second and third conveyors over said aperture; means responsive to said sensing means for activating said means for reciprocating said blade to move said blade downwardly into engagement with a patch over said aperture detected by said sensing means and thence into said aperture with said patch, whereby said patch is folded in said aperture; a heated bar forming a part of the first side of said aperture; a slidable bar forming a part of the second side of said aperture; means for urging said slidable side bar against a patch in said aperture and said heated bar operatively interconnected with said means for reciprocating said blade; means for removing said slidable bar from said patch and heated bar whereby a folded and pressed patch is obtained; a chute member at the bottom of said aperture at one side thereof and means for conveying said folded and pressed patch to said sewing machine.

The zipper patch forming and sewing machine as defined in claim 1 and wherein the means for feeding a patch to said sewing machine comprises a shaft, a disc mounted on said shaft for a roll of individual patches attached on a backing material, means for folding said patches and means for feeding said patches into said sewing machine.
13. The zipper patch forming and sewing machine as defined in claim 1 and wherein the means for feeding said zipper string includes a detection means for indicating a zipper string exhaustion; and a detection means for indicating a zipper string jam up in the feeding means.

A fly side zipper patch sewing and forming machine the combination comprising: a serging sewing machine; means for feeding a patch and a backing material into said serging sewing machine including means for detecting an exhaustion of said patches and backing material and means for guiding said patches and said material; a two needle flat bed sewing machine; means for feeding a zipper string to said two needlE sewing machine; means for guiding said zipper string and said patches and backing material in said two needle machine; means for intermittent pulling of said zipper string, backing material and said patches operatively interconnected with said two needle sewing machine and said serging sewing machine in an operative sewing mode and inoperatively interconnected in an inoperable sewing mode of said two needle sewing machine and said serging machine; means for engaging said means for intermittent pulling and means for disengaging said means for intermittent pulling; a first guide means for said zipper string and said patches including a guide wheel movable between a first signal position and a second signal position and means for folding said zipper string whereby the teeth on said zipper string form one edge of said continuous string of patches; a first means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches; means for gapping a segment of zipper teeth in said zipper string including means for adjusting said segment within a single tooth position, said means for gapping being operatively interconnected with said first means for intermittent feeding said zipper string and patches whereby said zipper string is predeterminately positioned for gapping; said means for gapping being further operatively interconnected with said first signal position and second signal position on said first guide means for said zipper string and patches; a second guide means for said zipper string and patches including a second guide wheel movable between a third signal position and a fourth signal position; a second means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches; means for cutting said zipper string including means for placing in cutting position said zipper string, said means for placing in cutting position said zipper string being operatively interconnected with said second means for intermittent feeding of said zipper string and patches, said cutting means being further operatively interconnected with said third signal position and fourth signal position of said second guide means; and means for removing a zipper patch from said means for cutting said zipper string including means for stacking of same.
15. A pickup and transfer device for a garment component, the combination comprising: a motor, a shaft extension on said motor, a plurality of pinions on said shaft extension, a plurality of racks interconnected with said pinions, a table for a stack of garment components attached on top of said racks, means for activating said motor for a left hand and right hand rotation of said shaft whereby said table is reciprocated upwardly and downwardly, a guide means for said garment component on said table adjacent to one side of said table, a guide means for said garment components on said table at one end of said table, a vertical end part for said table, a fixed frame member, a plurality of rails above said table extending beyond said table and mounted in said fixed frame member, a carriage slideably mounted on said rails, said carriage including a supply reel, an engagement wheel, a takeup reel, an adhesive tape on said supply reel interconnected via said engagement wheel to said takeup reel, a drive gear, a vertical frame member, a plurality of shafts on said vertical frame member comprising a first shaft for said supply reel, a second shaft for said engagement wheel, a third shaft for said takeup reel, a fourth shaft for said drive gear, said drive gear being operatively interconnected with said takeup reel; means for reciprocating said carriage on said rails between a pickup position and a transfer position, means for incrementally driving said drive gear on reciprocation of said carriage pickup and transfer position; and means for activating said rotation of said motor operatively interconnected with said carriage in said pickup position including means for initiating a pickup and transfer work cycle whereby a garmEnt component is picked off said table by said tape on said engagement wheel and transferred to a next work station.
16. A folder for garment components as a work piece, the combination comprising: a conveyor; a motor for said conveyor; a first, a second and a third section of said conveyor; means for interlinking said first, second and third sections of said conveyor whereby said conveyor moves said work piece on each section at a similar velocity; said second and third conveyor sections being located adjacent each other and being spaced apart by an aperture therebetween in the feed direction of said first conveyor section; a frame over said second and third conveyor sections and said aperture; a blade slidably mounted in said frame in vertical alignment with said aperture; means for urging downwardly and upwardly said blade whereby said blade is slidably dependent from said frame; means for sensing the presence of a patch on said second and third conveyor sections over said aperture; means for activating at least once said means for urging downwardly said blade whereby said blade is pushed into engagement with a patch over said aperture and then enters the aperture with the patch to fold the patch in said aperture; means for pressing said patch in said aperture and means for conducting said patch from said aperture for feeding the same to a subsequent work station.
17. A folder for garment components, the combination comprising: a conveyor having a plurality of interlinked conveyor rollers in first, second and third sections; a motor for driving said interlinked conveyor rollers, an edge guide for a patch on said first and second sections of said conveyor rollers, said second and third conveyor sections being located adjacent each other and being spaced apart by an elongated aperture therebetween extending in the feed direction of said conveyor rollers; a blade insertable in said aperture; a frame over said second and third conveyor sections and said aperture wherefrom said blade is slidably dependent; means for reciprocating said blade downwardly and upwardly; means for sensing the presence of a patch on said second and third conveyors over said aperture; means responsive to said sensing means for activating said means for reciprocating said blade to move said blade downwardly into engagement with a patch over said aperture detected by said sensing means and thence into said aperture with said patch, whereby said patch is folded in said aperture; a heated bar forming a part of the first side of said aperture; a slidable bar forming a part of the second side of said aperture; means for urging said slidable side bar against a patch in said aperture and heated bar operatively interconnected with means for reciprocating said blade; means for removing said slidable bar from said patch and heated bar whereby a folded and pressed patch is obtained; a chute member at the bottom of said aperture at one side thereof and means for conveying said folded and pressed patch to a subsequent work station.
18. A pickup, transfer and fold device for a garment component, the combination comprising: a motor, a shaft extension on said motor, a plurality of pinions on said shaft extension, a plurality of racks interconnected with said pinions, a table for a stack of garment components attached on top of said racks, means for activating said motor for a left hand and right hand rotation of said shaft whereby said table is reciprocated upwardly and downwardly, a guide means for said garment component on said table adjacent to one side of said table, a guide means for said garment components on said table at one end of said table, a vertical end part for said table, a fixed frame member, a plurality of rails above said table extending beyond said table and mounted in said fixed frame member, a carriage slidably mounted on said rails, said carriage including a supply reel, an engagement wheel, a takeup reel, an adhesive tape on said supply reel interconnected via said engagemenT wheel to said takeup reel, a drive gear, a vertical frame member, a plurality of shafts on said vertical frame member comprising a first shaft for said supply reel, a second shaft for said engagement wheel, a third shaft for said takeup reel, a fourth shaft for said drive gear, said drive gear being operatively interconnected with said takeup reel; means for reciprocating said carriage on said rails between a pickup position and a transfer position; means for incrementally driving said drive gear on reciprocation of said carriage between said pickup and transfer position; means for activating said rotation of said motor operatively interconnected with said carriage in said pickup position including means for initiating a pickup and transfer work cycle whereby a garment component is picked off said table by said tape on said engagement wheel; a conveyor having a plurality of interlinked conveyor rollers having first, second and third sections; a motor for driving said interlinked conveyor rollers; means for detecting said carriage over said conveyor; means for transferring said garment component to said first conveyor section; an edge guide for a patch on said first and second sections on said conveyor rollers; said second and third conveyor sections being located adjacent each other and being spaced apart by an elongated aperture therebetween extending in the feed direction of said conveyor rollers; a blade insertable in said aperture; a frame over said second and third conveyor sections and said aperture wherefrom said blade is slidably dependent; means for reciprocating said blade downwardly and upwardly; means for sensing the presence of a patch on said second and third conveyors over said aperture; means responsive to said sensing means for activating said means for reciprocating said blade to move said blade downwardly into engagement with a patch over said aperture detected by said sensing means and thence into said aperture with said patch, whereby said patch is folded in said aperture; a heated bar forming a part of the first side of said aperture; a slidable bar forming a part of the second side of said aperture; means for urging said slidable bar against a patch in said aperture and said heated bar operatively interconnected with means for reciprocating said blade; means for removing said slidable bar from said patch and heated bar whereby a folded and pressed patch is obtained; a chute member at the bottom of said aperture at one side thereof and means for conveying said folded and pressed patch to a subsequent work station.
19. The device as defined in claim 18 and comprising a frame member over said first section of said conveyor rollers and, interconnected to said frame member, means for inverting a work piece on said conveyor rollers.
20. A fly side zipper patch sewing and forming machine the combination comprising: a serging sewing machine; means for feeding a patch and a backing material into said serging sewing machine including means for guiding said patches and said material; a two needle flat bed sewing machine; means for feeding a zipper string to said two needle sewing machine; means for guiding said zipper string and said patches and backing material in said two needle machine; means for intermittent pulling of said zipper string, backing material and said patches including means for engaging said means for intermittent pulling and means for disengaging said means for intermittent pulling, said means for intermittent pulling being operatively interconnected with said two needle sewing machine and said serging sewing machine in an operative sewing mode and inoperatively interconnected in an inoperable sewing mode of said two needle sewing machine and said serging machine; a first means for guiding said zipper string and patches sewn to it including means for turning outwardly said zipper string, said means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said two needle sewing machine; means for gapping saId zipper string including a first means for feeding said zipper string and patches, means for slowing and stopping said first means for feeding of said zipper string and said patch whereby a segment of said zipper teeth on said zipper string is placed in said means for gapping and removed therefrom by said means for gapping when said means for feeding is stopped, said means for gapping being operatively interconnected with said means for sewing and said first means for guiding said zipper string and patches sewn thereto; a second means for guiding said zipper string and patches, said second means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said means for gapping; means for cutting of said zipper string including a second means for feeding said zipper string and said patches sewn thereto, a second means for slowing and stopping of said second means for feeding whereby said zipper string is placed in a proper cutting position, means for removing a patch with a cut zipper string from an uncut zipper string, said second means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said second means for feeding and stopping and means for cutting said zipper string; and means for stacking said patch with a cut zipper string, said means for stacking being operatively interconnected with means for removing said patch with a cut zipper string from said means for cutting.
21. In a system for fabricating clothing parts, an elongated flexible part carrier comprising a zipper string with parts attached thereto at spaced intervals, means for fastening each of said parts to said zipper string in a first fabricating operation upon each of said parts at a first station, means for feeding said zipper string and parts to a second station for the performance of a further operation on said parts, means for forming a loop in said zipper string intermediate said first and second stations, means for detecting the movement of the bottom of said loop above a certain predetermined position, means for disabling the feeding of said zipper string to said second station until said loop bottom drops below said predetermined level and means for severing said string at selected locations between said parts to form separate parts with attached zipper segments.
22. A system as in claim 21 including means for detecting and signaling the movement of said loop bottom below a second pre-determined position located below the first predetermined position.
23. A system as in claim 21 including means for applying tension to the portion of said zipper string in said loop.
24. A system as in claim 23 in which said tension applying means includes a weighted member hanging in said loop at the bottom thereof, and means for guiding said member in movement upwardly and downwardly with said loop bottom.
25. A system as in claim 24 in which said detecting means includes switch means engageable by said weighted member.
26. A system as in claim 24 in which said member is a wheel, and including means for partially counter-balancing the weight of said wheel.
27. A system as in claim 21 wherein said parts are pants fly parts, said further operation is the gapping of teeth on said zipper string, and said system includes third and fourth operating stations, means for forming a loop in said zipper string respectively located between each of the second and third and third and fourth stations, means associated with each of said last mentioned loop forming means for detecting the movement of the bottom of said loop above a certain predetermined position and means respectively responsive to said loop detecting means for disabling feeding of said zipper string to said third and fourth stations until the loops therebetween drop below said predetermined level; means at said third station for applying a top stop to the zipper adjacent each patch, and said means for severing said zipper string being located at said fourth station.
28. A system as in claim 27 including means at said first station for indiCating the sewing of one of said parts to said zipper string and sending a corresponding start signal to start one cycle of operation of each of said top stop applying means and severing means and gapping means.
29. A fly side zipper patch sewing and forming machine the combination comprising: first means for repetitive feeding of a series of patches including means for raising and lowering a stack of patches in a first pickup position, means for picking up a top patch from said stack of patches; means for transferring said top patch from said stack of patches and depositing said top patch in a second, transfer position; means for reciprocating said means for transferring between said first pickup position and said second, transfer position; means for detaching said top patch from said means for transferring at said second, transfer position; means for returning said means for transferring to said first pickup position including means for activating said means for picking up said top patch and means for initiating a repetitive pickup and transfer work cycle; first means for placing a patch of said patches in a receiving position; second means for repetitive feeding of a series of backing material for said patches; second means for placing a backing of said backing material in a receiving position; means for mating each of said patches with a backing therefore; a serging sewing machine including means operatively interconnected with said first and second means for repetitive feeding and means for mating; third means for repetitive feeding a mated patch and a backing material into said serging sewing machine for sewing therein including means for guiding said patches and said backing material; a two needle flat bed sewing machine; means for feeding a zipper string to said two needle sewing machine; means for guiding said zipper string and said patches and backing material in said two needle machine; means for intermittent pulling of said zipper string, backing material and said patches including means for engaging said means for intermittent pulling and means for disengaging said means for intermittent pulling, said means for intermittent pulling being operatively interconnected with said two needle sewing machine in an operative sewing mode and inoperatively interconnected in an inoperable sewing mode of said two needle sewing machine; a first means for guiding said zipper string and patches sewn to it including means for turning outwardly said zipper, said means for guiding being operatively interconnected with means for sewing; means for gapping said zipper string including a first means for feeding said zipper string and patches, means for slowing and stopping said first means for feeding of said zipper string and said patch whereby a segment of said zipper teeth on said zipper string is placed in said means for gapping and removed therefrom by said means for gapping when said means for feeding is stopped, said means for gapping being operatively interconnected with said means for sewing and said first means for guiding said zipper string and patches sewn thereto; a second means for guiding said zipper string and patches, said second means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said means for gapping; means for cutting of said zipper string including a second means for feeding said zipper string and said patches sewn thereto, a second means for slowing and stopping of said second means for feeding whereby said zipper string is placed in a proper cutting position, means for removing a patch with a cut zipper string from an uncut zipper string, said second means for guiding being operatively interconnected with said second means for feeding and stopping and means for cutting said zipper string; and means for stacking said patch with a cut zipper string, said means for stacking being operatively interconnected with means for removing said patch with a cut zipper string from said meanS for cutting.
30. The machine as defined in claim 1 and including means for automatic operation of said machine.
31. The machine as defined in claim 12 and including means for automatic operation of said machine.
32. The machine as defined in claim 20 and including means for automatic operation of said machine.
33. The machine as defined in claim 29 and including means for automatic operation of said machine.
