UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. HENTZELL, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,478. dated January 7, 188 8.
Application filed June 1, 1887. Serial No 240.006. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HENTZELL, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Chimneys; and Ihereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improved chimney of that class which are made of terra-cotta or other pipes having an exterior casing with an air-space between the two. i
It consists of an improved construction of the interior sections and the manner of connecting them with the joint-rings, so as to hold them firmly and make tightjoints, and in the elastic springs attached to said j oint-rings, whereby the space between the chimney proper and the outer surroundingtube is maintained, together with a means for making a joint between said tube and the base or cap.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the chimney and the exterior casing, showing, also, the chimney top and base. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the chimney-sections with the connecting-band separated therefrom, showing how the two are united, and showing, also, the springs.
A A are sections of terracotta, earthen, or
other pipe, formed in suitable lengths to be united for the purpose of forming chimneys or flues. These sections are formed with screw-threads B at each end, which are fitted to engage with corresponding screw-threads in the couplings C. These couplings may be made of any suitable material; but I have made them of iron, having screw threads formed on the interior which correspond with those of the pipe-sections, so that the latter may be screwed into them, and will thus form a rigid support, which will prevent them from getting out of place. The upper edges of the couplings are beveled inwardly, as shown at c, and when the joints are to be put together I first place uniting-cement upon the upper end of the lower section after the coupling has been screwed upon this section. The next section above is then screwed into thecoupling until its lower end is bedded in the cement f, which forms the joint between the two, and after this is done cement is placed in the trough or channel 0, formed around the top of the coupling, and this makes a perfectly tight and secure joint.
-At the top of the chimney the cap Dis fitted with screw-threads, so as to screw upon the top of the upper section in the same manner as before described, and this makes a perfectly solid rigid fastening.
In order to render this class of chimneys safe, it is customary to inclose them with larger exterior tubes, so that there will be an air space or channel around them. E is one of these tube-sections, which in the present case is shown as made of metal, and the lower end is embedded in cementf in a groove or channel, F, made in the base, which is similar to the grooves or channels made in the couplings, as before described. l
The exterior pipe-sections are preferably joined togel her at points intermediate between the couplings of the chimney, so as to break Y joints with them.
In order to keep the chimneysections central and prevent their touching the sides of the exterior pipe, I have secured the fiat springs G to the coupling-sections, there being three or more of these springs, which project upwardly, having theirupperends turned inwardly, so that the Quter pipes will slip over them without catching upon the upper ends, and the elasticity of these springs is such as to retain the inner and outer pipes in proper relation with each other.
Wherever'it is necessary to form any T branches or other joints, it will be manifest that these joints can be made with screwthread and couplings in the same manner as shown for the chimney-sections themselves.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The earthenware chimney-sections with the screw-couplings by which the adjacent ends are united and the exterior pipe-sections of larger diameter, within which the chimney is inclosed, in combination with the elastic springs attached to the sides of the couplings and acting to hold the chimney central within the exterior pipe, substantially as described.
In'witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
BENJAMIN F. H'ENTZELL.
