Abstract

Each roll is fitted with a central bore and radial passages. Inside of the central bore in either roll there is the header dividing all the radial passages into individual sections, one part of which serves for supplying and the other for discharging the coolant.

1 ROLL MOULD WITH COOLING SYSTEM The present invention relates to an apparatus for continuous casting-rolling of metallic strips directly from molten metal and more particularly to rolls incorporated in the afore-said apparatus.
The present invention may be utilized mostefficiently for manufacturing hot-rolled strips from non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, zinc, lead, and their alloys, especially in producing aluminium strips for further processing into foil which finds its application in the food, electrical and contruction industries.
Roll moulds for producing strips directly from metal in the hot fluid state, are presently known and comprises rolls in the form of shafts enclosed in sleeves. The molten metal is fed into the clearance between the two rolls while the fluid supplied through the central bore of either roll to cool the sleeves flows along the radial and circular passages with the circular passages located at the ends of the roll shaft communicating with the aid of helical passages provided for that purpose in the roll body (see the USA Pat. Nos. 2190216 and 2850176, Cl. 22-57,5 i 1 In these moulds the coolant, admitted through the central bore and a number of radial holes leading into the circular passage located at one end of the shaft flows along the helical passages in the roll body into the circular passage situated at the other end of the shaft, wherefrom it is discharged, passing on its way through the radial holes and central bore.
In order to provide stability in the process which occurs in a roll mould, the direction and amount of heat removed by the rolls from the crystallization zone during intensive cooling should be held strictly constant.-
In the moulds of the above construction the outlet and inlet temperature of the coolant will be different and heat removed from the metal will not be uniform along both the length of the roll body and over the height of the crystallization zone.
It is the object of the present invention to eliminate the above disadvantages.
Another object of the present invention is aimed in essence at developing a roll mould fitted with a cooling system which would ensure the production of highquality strip stock due to a uniform heat removal from the metal both along the length and over theheight of the crystallization zone.
This and the other foregoingproblems are solved by designing a roll mould comprising rolls having the form of shafts contained in sleeves. The. molten metal is poured into the clearance between the roll shafts; the structure is equipped with radial and circular passages to receive cooling fluid which is admitted through the central bore in either roll to cool saidsleeve, with each bore housing, in conformity to the present invention, a header which serves to divide all the radial passages into separate sections, one part of which is designed for supplying and the other for draining the cooling fluid.
The above cooling system ensures a uniform heat removal from the hot metal all over the crystallization zone both along its length and over its height owing to the fact that a constant amount of the coolant at one and the same temperature is fed into the system.
Upon setting up the header it would be expedient to provide its revolution about the roll axis in order to control the cooling cycle.
The header can be a pipe whose outer surface is fitted with packing straps which are in contact with the inner surface of the shaft acting as the plane bearings on which the roll is rotating about the said header.
For better understanding of the present invention an exemplary embodiment of the proposed device with reference to the accompanying drawings is considered below:
FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view of the roll mould in conformity with the invention;
FIG. 2 depicts the same device, longitudinal section.
.The roll mould is made up of two rolls,.either of them comprising metal shaft 1 (FIG. 1) housed in sleeve 2.
The molten metal is fed from nozzle 3 into the cleartime between the rolls. The direction of the metal flow is indicated in the drawing by pointer A.
Shaft 1 of the roll has a central bore incorporating header 4 which is a pipe carrying on its outer surface packing straps 5. The latter are in contact with the interior of shaft 1 acting as plane bearings when the roll is rotating about the header.
Shaft 1 of the roll is fitted with radial passages 6 (FIG. 2) and circular passages 7.
Header 4 serves also to divide all radial passages 6 into separate sections 8, 9 and 10 (FIG. 1), section 10 being used for feeding the coolant and sections 8 and 9 for its draining.
To change the position of section 10, which represents a cooling zone, with a view to obtain the most favorable cooling cycle for various metals and their alloys, header 4 is capable of revolving about the roll axis through any desire desired both during the setting of the roll mould and in operation.
The cooling fluid is admitted through central bore 1 1 (FIG. 2) and a number of holes 12 in header 4, and flows in the direction indicated by pointer B. Pointer C shows the coolant outlet.
The butt ends of the cooling zone is restricted by packing strips 13. i
The actual process of manufacturing strips in the above roll mould accurs in the following manner.
The molten metal, fed through nozzle 3, passes into the clearance between the rolls, comes in contact with sleeve 2 and upon crystallizing emerges from the rolls in the form of a hot-rolled strip.
Heat is removed from the metal by the cooling water admitted through central bore 11 into header 4 from where it passes through a plurality of holes 12 provided in the pipe and enters cooling zone 10 where it flows along radial passages 6 coming in contact with sleeve 2 and after absorbing its heat runs along circular passages 7 into sections 8 and 9 and further on to the drains.
Whatis claimed is:
l. A roll mould for manufacturing strip stock from molten metal, comprising: a plurality of rolls, at least one of which is made in the shape of a shaft enclosed in a sleeve with the molten metal passed into the roll water flow; circular passages formed in the same shaft to act also as coolant passages; a central bore in the afore-mentioned roll incorporating a header which divides all the radial passages into separate sections, at least one of the sections serving for feeding the cooling fluid and at least one of the sections serving for drain ing the cooling fluid, said header being rotatable relative to the 'roll.
2. The roll mould article of claim 1 in which the which are in contact with the inner surface of the roll header is capable of revolving about the roll axis to shaft acting as the plane bearings when the n is tomb control the cooling rate.

Claims (3)

1. A roll mould for manufacturing strip stock from molten metal, comprising: a plurality of rolls, at least one of which is made in the shape of a shaft enclosed in a sleeve with the molten metal passed into the roll bite; radial passages provided in said shaft for cooling water flow; circular passages formed in the same shaft to act also as coolant passages; a central bore in the afore-mentioned roll incorporating a header which divides all the radial passages into separate sections, at least one of the sections serving for feeding the cooling fluid and at least one of the sections serving for draining the cooling fluid, said header being rotatable relative to the roll.
2. The roll mould article of claim 1 in which the header is capable of revolving about the roll axis to control the cooling rate.
3. The roll mould article of claim 1 wherein the header is a pipe fitted on the outside with packing strips which are in contact with The inner surface of the roll shaft acting as the plane bearings when the roll is rotating about the header.
