UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDWARD MAGUIRE, OF LEMONT, ILLINOIS.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER FOR CAR-HEATERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,745, dated December 13 1887.
Application filed April 26, 1887. Serial No. 236,185. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD MAGUIRE, of Lemont, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Extinguisher for Car-Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved fire-extinguisher for carheaters, to extinguish the fire in the heater when the latter is upset by a collision or other accident.
ihc tank partly in section; and Fig. 2 is asectional plan view of the same.
In the car A is placed the car-heater B, of any approved construction. Into the fire-box of the heater B leads the pipe 0, connected by the flexible tube D with the outlet-pipe E, se cured in the middle to the perforated bottom F of the tank G, supported on suitable braces above the heater B.
In the tank G is secured the false bottom H, held a short distance above the perforated bottom F, and provided in its middle with an opening adapted to be closed by a plug or stopper, I, to the upper end of which is secured one end of the wire or rope J, extending upward through the top of the tank G and passing over a swivel-pulley, K, secured to roof of the car A. The wire or rope J then passes downward, and is secured with its end to the heater B in any convenient manner. The top of the tank, G, is provided with an inlet-opening, G, adapted to be closed by cap. The tank G, abovethe false bottom H, is filled with a fire-extinguishing fluid, which is introduced through the inlet G.
To the upper end of the stopper or plug I is also secured one end 'of the rope L, leading upward and passing over the pulley K and the false bottom H, whereby part of the tire I extinguishing fluid in the tank G passes through the pipes E, D, and G into the firebox of the heaterAand extinguishes theburning fuel in the heater. guishing fluid passes through the perforated bottom F and spreads over the outside of the heater, thus cooling the heater, and also extinguishing any burning fuel which may have passed out through the doors of the heater. In case the heater B is not upset, but there is Part of the fire-extin a danger through certain causes that the heater may set fire to the car, then if one of the passengers pulls on the rope Lthe plug or stopper I is withdrawn from the false bottom H, and the fireextingnishing fluid in the tank G will then also act, as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 The combination, with the car-heater B, having a pipe, 0, leading through itinto the cornbustion-chamber, of the tank G, secured to the car above and to one side of the heater and provided with an apertured false bottom, H,
having a valve or plug, I, the foraminated bot tom F, below the false bottom and provided with an outlet-pipe, E, the pipe D, connecting said outlet with the pipe 0, and the operatingcord connected to the plug and leading out through the tank, whereby when the plug is withdrawn the contents of the tank will flow into the car through the foraminated bottom and into the heater through the pipe D, substantially as set forth.
, EDWARD MAGUIRE.
