A connecting member is movably connected to a carrying case body and connected to a carrying case cover and operable to move said cover relative to said body between a closed position and a position for use. A mirror is carried by and substantially rigid with said cover and extends substantially parallel thereto. The cover is arranged to define in said closed position with said case body an interface extending substantially in a plane. Said case body, connecting member and cover define for said cover an axis of rotation, which is spaced outwardly from said case body and parallel to said interface and about which said cover is movable between said closed position and said position for use.

5 Claims, 7 Drawing Figures PAIENIH, JUL 1 mm sum 2 m I 4 PAIENKwumms 3'746'437 sum 3 or 4 Y ATTORNEY ARRANGEMENT FOR USE IN PROJECTION This invention relates to an arrangement for use in projection, which is accommodated in a carrying case and comprises a cover, which is connected to the case body by a connecting member and which carries a mirror, which is substantially rigid with the cover and extends parallel thereto.
Numerous arrangements for use in projection, particularly projectors, are known which are in a carrying case and comprise a cover, which is hinged to the case body and to which a mirror is secured, which is moved to an operative position as the cover is opened. Those arrangements in which the mirror is fixed directly to the cover have the disadvantage that the cover which carries the mirror has an oblique position for use and for this reason has to be relatively large for a relatively small picture. Whereas a projector is known which is accommodated in a carrying case and has a cover that is substantially vertical in position for use, a mirror which is adjustably connected to the cover, and a backlighted screen which is connected to the cover, and this mirror and screen can be about the same size as the cover, that projector comprises a large number of parts which support and carry the adjustable mirror and the back-lighted screen. The German Patent Specification No. 718,642 shows an arrangement which is of the kind described first hereinbefore but has the disadvantage that the connecting member consists of a stand, which is composed of a plurality of sections fitted one into the other. That stand had to be assembled when the arrangement had to be changed from its transport condition to its condition for use in a complicated manipulation.
The invention eliminates the described disadvantages. This is accomplished in that the connecting member is movably mounted on the case body; the connecting member is movable from a transport position assumed when the cover is closed to a position for use; the axis of rotation of the cover is spaced from and disposed outwardly of the case and extends parallel to the interface between the case body and the case cover; and a back-lighted screen is secured in known manner to the cover of the case. In this arrangement the cover of the case may be very small relative to the size of the mirror and of any back-lighted screen. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the height of the screen is substantially as large as the height of the interior of the case. These arrangements may be used as accessories for a projector or may form a part of a projector accommodated in a carrying case. It is not essential to provide a back-lighted screen because the arrangement according to the invention may also be used for overhead projection.
Further advantages and features of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an embodiment which is shown diagrammatically and by way of example in the drawing, in which FIGS. I to 3 are diagrammatic means showing the arrangement according to the invention in different views, FIG. I showing the carrying case in closed condition, FIG. 2 showing the carrying case in an intermediate condition and FIG. 3 showing the arrangement in an open condition.
FIG. 5 corresponds substantially -to FIG. I and shows the arrangement according to the invention in a side elevation.
FIG. 6 shows the opened arrangement according to FIG. 3.
FIG. 7 shows another position in which the cover of the case is entirely open.
The arrangement according to the invention for use in projection comprises a carrying case 1, to which a cover 2 is secured. The cover 2 carries on its inside a mirror 3. A back-lighted screen 4 is hinged to that side of the cover 2 which is on top when ,the cover is open. Hinged side elements 5, 6 define together with the back-lighted screen 4, the mirror 3 and the cover 2 an enclosed light path when the cover 2 is open. It will be understood that the side elements 5, 6 may be replaced by bellows. Instead of being hinged on the axes 5a, 6a, the side parts 5, 6 might be pivoted like fan blades.
In addition to the deflecting mirror 3, there is a hinged mirror 7, which swings against a stop 7a (FIG. 4), e.g., under the force of a spring 25, in response to the opening of the cover 2. One arm of .the spring 25 abuts against a stationary stop 26 and the other arm of the spring abuts against the back of the mirror 7. The light from a projector 28 is thrown by this hinged mirror 7 onto the deflecting mirror 3 and by the latter onto the back-lighted screen 4. The arrangement according to the invention might also be used for overhead projection; in this case the deflecting mirror 3 would throw the light onto a front-lighted screen.
The cover 2 is provided at its lower end with a hinge .8, which is secured to a connecting member 9, which is connected to the case body I by a hinge 10. The connecting member 9 has an aperture 11. A locking member 13 snaps into the aperture 11 under the action of a spring 12 when the cover 2 is closed. The locking member is operable from the outside by a handle 17. When the locking member 13 has been retracted against the force of the spring 12, a spring 18 engaging an extension 14 of the connecting member 9 lifts the latter in the sense of the arrow a so that the cover 2 of the case is moved to the position shown in FIG. 2. A link 15 is pivoted to the cover of the case and provided with a pin 16, which extends through an opening 19 in the connecting member 9. The opening 19 is formed with two detent indentations 20,. 21.
When the cover 2 of the case has reached the position shown in FIG. 2, it can be raised as indicated by the arrow b (FIG. 6) so that the pin 16 falls into the detent indentation 20. The resulting position of the cover 2 corresponds to an imaginary pivotal axis P (FIGS. 3, 6), which results from the hinges 8 and 10 and is spaced outwardly from the case body. When thecover is in the position shown in FIGS. 3 and 6, the back-lighted screen 4 and the side elements 5, 6 may be swung out, particularly under the action of springs 22, 23 and, if desired, after locking members, not shown, have been opened. In this position, the arrangement according to the invention is ready for operation.
Alternatively, the cover 2 of the case may be entirely opened from the position shown in FIG. .6 so that the cover reaches the position shown in FIG. 7. In this case, the pin 16 enters the detent indentation 21 to lock the cover of the case, whereas the back-lighted screen 4 and the side elements 5, 6 remain in their inner position. One of the side walls 24 of the case body 1 may now be placed on a support and the projected light falls directly on the hinged mirror 7, which reflects the light onto a front-lighted screen.
Numerous embodiments are possible within the scope of the invention. For instance, the hinged mirror 7 might be operated by the connecting member 9 (indicated by line 27 in FIG. 4) or its extension 14 and could be connected to means for actuating a safety switch or the like means for effecting a disconnection from the power source when the cover is closed so that the projector 28 accommodated in the arrangement according to the invention cannot remain inadvertently energized when the cover of the arrangement is closed.
What is claimed is:
1. An arrangement for use in projection, which comprises a carrying case body,
a carrying case cover,
a connecting member connected to said cover and movably connected to said case body and operable to move said cover relative to said body between a closed position and a position for use, and
a mirror which is carried by and substantially rigidly connected with said cover and extends substantially parallel thereto,
said cover being arranged to define in said closed position with said case body an interface extending substantially in a plane, I
said case body, connecting member, and cover defining for said cover an axis of rotation which is spaced outwardly away from said case body and parallel to said interface and about which said cover is movable between said closed position and said position for use,
a second mirror, which is hinged to said connecting member and arranged to be pivotally movable from an inoperative position to an operative position in response to a movement of said connecting member from a position corresponding to the closed position of said cover to a position corresponding to the position for use of said cover.
2. An arrangement as set forth in claim I, which comprises spring means urging said connecting member toward its position corresponding to the position for use of said cover and spring means urging said second mirror toward said operative position relative to said connecting member.
3. An arrangement for use in projection, which comprises a carrying case body,
a carrying case cover,
a connecting member connected to said cover and movably connected to said case body and operable to move said cover relative to said body between a closed position and a position for use, and
a mirror which is carried by and substantially rigidly connected with said cover and extends substantially parallel thereto,
said cover being arranged to define in said closed position with said case body an interface extending substantially in a plane,
said case body, connecting member, and cover defining for said cover an axis of rotation which is spaced outwardly away from said case body and parallel to .said interface and about which said cover is movable between said closed position and said position for use,
a substandard motion picture projector accommodated in said case body, and
switch means connected to said connecting member and arranged to render said projector ready for operation in response to a movement of said connecting member to its position corresponding to the position for use of said cover.
4. An arrangement as set forth in claim 3, in which said switch means are adapted to energize said projector in response to a movement of said connecting member to its position corresponding to the position for use of said cover.
5. An arrangement for use in projection, which comprises a carrying case body, a carrying case cover, a connecting member connected to said cover and movably connected to said case body and operable to move said cover relative to said body between a closed position and a position for use, and a mirror which is carried by and substantially rigidly connected with said cover and extends substantially parallel thereto, said cover being arranged to define in said closed position with said case body an interface extending substantially in a plane,

Claims (5)

1. An arrangement for use in projection, which comprises a carrying case body, a carrying case cover, a connecting member connected to said cover and movably connected to said case body and operable to move said cover relative to said body between a closed position and a position for use, and a mirror which is carried by and substantially rigidly connected with said cover and extends substantially parallel thereto, said cover being arranged to define in said closed position with said case body an interface extending substantially in a plane, said case body, connecting member, and cover defining for said cover an axis of rotation which is spaced outwardly away from said case body and parallel to said interface and about which said cover is movable between said closed position and said position for use, a second mirror, which is hinged to said connecting member and arranged to be pivotally movable from an inoperative position to an operative position in response to a movement of said connecting member from a position corresponding to the closed position of said cover to a position corresponding to the position for use of said cover.
2. An arrangement as set forth in claim 1, which comprises spring means urging said connecting member toward its position corresponding to the position for use of said cover and spring means urging said second mirror toward said operative position relative to said connecting member.
3. An arrangement for use in projection, which comprises a carrying case body, a carrying case cover, a connecting member connected to said cover and movably connected to said case body and operable to move said cover relative to said body between a closed position and a position for use, and a mirror which is carried by and substantially rigidly connected with said cover and extends substantially parallel thereto, said cover being arranged to define in said closed position with said case body an interface extending substantially in a plane, said case body, connecting member, and cover defining for said cover an axis of rotation which is spaced outwardly away from said case body and parallel to said interface and about which said cover is movable between said closed position and said position for use, a substandard motion picture projector accommodated in said case body, and switch means connected to said connecting member and arranged to render said projector ready for operation in response to a movement of said connecting member to its position corresponding to the position for use of said cover.
4. An arrangement as set forth in claim 3, in which said switch means are adapted to energize said projector in response to a movement of said connecting member to its position corresponding to thE position for use of said cover.
5. An arrangement for use in projection, which comprises a carrying case body, a carrying case cover, a connecting member connected to said cover and movably connected to said case body and operable to move said cover relative to said body between a closed position and a position for use, and a mirror which is carried by and substantially rigidly connected with said cover and extends substantially parallel thereto, said cover being arranged to define in said closed position with said case body an interface extending substantially in a plane, said case body, connecting member, and cover defining for said cover an axis of rotation which is spaced outwardly away from said case body and parallel to said interface and about which said cover is movable between said closed position and said position for use, said carrying case body comprises a first axis, about which said connecting member is pivoted, said connecting member comprises a second axis, about which said carrying case cover is pivoted, and said axis of rotation results from a pivoting movement of said connecting member about said first axis and from a pivoting movement about said second axis.
