INITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE RICHARDSON, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
MEANS FOR PROTECTING THE WALLS OF 'BUILDINGS OR OTHER STRUCTURES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 373,946, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed November 5, 1887. Serial No. 254,343. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE RICHARDSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New- York, in the county of New York and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Protecting the Walls of Buildings and other Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which itappertaius to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a new and useful means for protecting the walls of buildings or other walls and structures, or so much of them as is located beneath the surface of the earth, from moisture and dampness, thereby protecting the walls from injury incidental to moisture and atthe same time assuring a perfectly dry wall.
My invention, briefly considered, consists in constructing a trench around the usual wall or foundation of a building on the outside thereof, cementing the outside of the foundation-wall, and filling the trench with a porous mixture of sand and cement or of broken stone, as hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings as In the accompanying drawings, A represents the usual foundation-wall of a house or other building provided with a coating, B, of plastic cement or asphaltum or other suitable mixture to make the wall water-tight.
C designates the trench alongside of the wall, in which I place a porous filling of sand and cement or broken stone or brick, which may or may'not be tamped therein.
D designates the soil, and E a drain pipe or gutter communicating with the trench, which may lead to a cesspool, sewer, or similar drain adjacent to the building or otherwise. I place the porous mixture preferably from two (2) to six (6) inches in thickness.
It will be understood that my invention is applicable to any wall or structure wher dampness is desired to be excluded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In combination, the wall A, water-proof coating B, and porous mixture 0, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the wallsA, water-proof coating B, porous mixture 0, and drain E, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORG E RICHARDSON.
I Witnesses:
CHAS. M. NYE, Geo. J. CHAPMAN.
