Abstract

A device for driving stakes and the like into the ground for establishing the elevation of the stake down from the outside line of the building down to the bottom of the footer. The invention contemplates a novel structure wherein a vertical frame of suitable height and configuration is provided to guide the stake into the ground in combination with the means to impart blows to the top of the stake and measure the penetration of the stake into the ground. Suitable scales are provided for assuring that the stake is driven the desired distance.

FIG.
1 DEVICE FOR DRIVING STAKES My invention relates to a novel type of instrument or device for driving stakes and the like into the ground for establishing building lines and to facilitate the positioning of batter boards andto assure the proper level of the lines established. 1 The inventor cognizant with the problems involved in the driving of stakes when laying out levels and running lines in the construction of buildings and the laying out of trench walls andthe like has evolved a simple pile driver type of structure which will drive stakes of varying length and cross sectional dimensions.
The frame work is rugged and is designed to withstand the rigors to which devices used in the construction field are subjected to.
An object of my invention is to provide a simple strong structure which may be employed by the average workman to guide stakes into the ground in a true vertical position.
Another'object of my invention is the provision of a stake driving device which will assure that the stake will be driven into the ground aprecise distance and controlled.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a novel structure which will accommodate 'stakes of varying dimensions. 7
Further objects and advantages of the structure disclosed as my invention will be readily apparent from the following detailed description when read in connection with the following drawings of which 'FIG. 1, is a foreshortened front elevational view, with a scale secured thereto. I FIG. 2, is a foreshortened side elevational view of the device shown in FIG. 1. i
FIG. 3, is a cross'sectional view of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4', is a cross sectional view taken on line 4 4 of FIG. 1. p
FIG. 5, is a side elevational view with the stake penetrating the ground and a previously driven stake altaken Online 3 3 ready in position.
- The novel structure of my invention as disclosed in the various figures comprises a vertical extending channel shaped .member 4 having horizontally extending handle portions 9-9 secured thereto and having a centrally disposed guide member 6 positioned therein at its lower end 16. Slidably mounted in the guide 6 and extending upwardly is'the plunger member 5 which has affixed thereto an operating handle 8 and a weight or hammer member 7 fixed at its lower end.
A scale or rule like member 3 is rotatably secured to the top of the assembly by means of the arm 2 and the nut 1 and extends downwardly the length of the channel member 4.
Sighting means 10 is secured to the side of the channel 4.
As shown a straight edgeholder 11 which folds out from the assembly and which [supports the level 17 may be locked in the desired position.
As shown in the various figures means 12, 12-13, 13 with their buttons 14-14 are provided means for holding the stake 19 in position in the member 15 as it enters the ground 20.
As shown and described the device of my invention gives the elevation of the stake from the-outside building line down to the bottom of the footer and has in combination a scale or rule 7 and a hammer 7 for imparting blows to the stake.
. In the operation of my improved device the first step is to insert the stake 19 and then level down from the outside foundation line and select the number on the scale 7 and then drive the stake to the required depth by imparting blows thereto by means of the hammer 7 operated by the worker by means of the handle 8 until the proper reading on the scale is obtained.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and I am only limited by the appended claims.
, What is claimed is:
1. An assembly for driving and guiding stakes and the like into the ground to assure uniform heights thereof comprising in combination a vertically extending tower like member, having centrally disposed therein and extending longitudinally with respect thereto a guide member disposed adjacent the bottom portion thereof, a sliding piston like member disposed within the confines of the guide member and longitudinally slidable with respect thereto, a hammer like weight member fixedly secured to the free end of said sliding member, a guide member for confining a stake therein disposed at the bottom of said assembly and means adjacent thereto for guiding and holding the stake worked upon in position.
2. An assembly for driving and guiding stakes and the like into the ground as exemplified in claim 1 characterized in this that the means for guiding and holding the stake worked upon comprises a plurality of adjustable members which bear againstthe stake; 7
3. An assembly for driving and guiding stakes and the like into the ground as exemplified in claim 1, characterized in this, that adjustable sighting means are positioned on the side of the assembly.
- 4. An assembly for driving and guiding stakes and the like into the ground as exemplified in claim 1, characterized in this thata scale is positioned longitudinally v with respect to the assembly and extends outwardly therefrom, whereby as the stake is driven the heightof the extending portion of the stake may be readily ascertained.
5. An assembly for driving and guiding stakes and the like into the ground as exemplified-in claim 4, whereby the scale is rotatably mounted to provide visibility from all angles. 1
