SURClNGLE-FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,521, dated November 22, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL O. FRos'r, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surcingle Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to surcingle-fastenings, the object being to provide means for quickly and securely uniting the ends of a surcingle by the employment ofone hand only; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of said fastenings, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings forming part of this specication, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a surcingle having fastening devices applied thereto constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a hook-frame for a surcingle-strap of a somewhat different form from that shown in Fig. 1.

In the drawings, A indicates the strap of the surcingle, which is made of the usual webbing, or of other suitable material, and Bis the pad and is of ordinary construction.

Heretofore it has been common to attach a buckle to one end of the surcingle and secure the latter around the animal when used to attach a blanket or for other purposes by buckling the ends; but this mode of fastening involves the use of both hands to accomplish it, and when a vicious animal is to be handled this is often inconvenient, and therefore the within-described improved fastening is devised and is constructed as follows: A hook-frame, D, constructed of any suitable metal, is provided with a transverse bar across one end, around-which the end of the surcingle or other strap is doubled, and said strap or surcingle is attached to the bar of the hook-frame by sewing or riveting the end thereof in any wellknown manner, and in substantially the same way that a buckle or similar article is attached to the end of a strap. In practice one of said hook-frames D is attached, as above, to each end of a strap or surcingle, which is to be provided with the within described improved fasteningdevices. with two hooks, e e, on its free end, bending or curved laterally from each other, said hooks being located centrally of the hook-frame and opposite and somewhat separated from the bar of the frame to which said surcingle or strap is attached. A thong or lasso, h, preferably of rawhide or other leather or cord, is firmly secured by one end to one of said hook-frames D, by slitting one end of the thong and drawing the other end through it, as shown at x, or in any other suitable manner.

The fastening devices above described are manipulated as follows: The surcingle is thrown over the animal, and the ends thereof having the hook-frames on them are brought near each other. The thong or lasso is then grasped by its free end and carried around the hooks e on both of said frames, and the end thereof is tied (preferably in a bow-knot) around the parts of the thong extending between the hook-frames D, or secured in any other suitable manner wherebyit can be easily and quickly disengaged to remove the surciugle.

The hook-frame D shown in Fig. 2 may be substituted for that shown in Fig. 1, and is constructed to form a slot, 5, and an eye, 3, therein, whereby the thong may, if preferred, be fastened to said eye; or, if a cord be used, it may be drawn through the eye and have its end knotted, and be thereby secured to the frame D without tying it, and said cord or thong may have one or more knots in it at a a suitable place or places, and by drawing the cord or thong into the said slot 5 it may be caught by the knot in it, and be thereby attached to the frame without tying it, as aforesaid.

The above-described fastening devices are applicable to blanket-fasteningsthat is to say, they are adapted to be advantageously used on blanketstraps instead of buckles, and on girths and baggage-straps, and, in fact, in any place where the ends of a strap need to be quickly and securely fastened one to the other.
